Music Department - Summer Band Update
Camp at Ball State U
Camp at Ball State
This was a busy summer for the Marching Blue Devils. Eight students went to Ball State University to participate in a Leadership Camp for one week with students from all over the country. Band directors, including Drum Corps International, provided outstanding workshops and classes for all of the students. Thanks to Music for All, under the leadership of Eric Martin, for providing Shortridge students with scholarships.
Band Camp, led by Band Director, Kathryn Spangler, was held for a week, 12 hours daily at PS 60 just south of the Shortridge campus. Unfortunately, funds were not available to have all of the band members attend summer band camp at Butler University; however, 45 students attended the PS 60 camp and worked very hard on their Duality Show with over 200 hours of rehearsal time prior to opening day at the Indiana State Fair Band Day. Nearly 45 state high school bands performed for Opening Day at the Fair. The band's mid-twenties finish, although not high enough for the top 16 evening competition, was none-the-less a great experience for the band students and an improvement from the 2012 competition at Band Day. Comments from the four judges were especially rewarding to hear. "...It's great to see an inner-city public school holding its own in a statewide competition!" Keep working hard, students! (Photos courtesy of Al Edyvean, SAA president.)

And, with Gregg's departure, the future of the electronic version of the Daily Echo is definitely in jeopardy. Are there any former alumni Echo reporters out there that would be interested in reviving this Shortridge tradition again? If so, send us an email at: shortridgealumni@sbcglobal.net.
