January 2013

The Millie Award Recipient for January is Pam Schaefer. She is a CNA and Restorative Aide at Tealwood's Faulkton Healthcare Center. Pam has worked at the Center since 1985. Both residents and staff know her as a dedicated, kind, and caring individual with an incredible work ethic.

Pam always puts the needs of her residents before her own needs. One never has to wonder whether Pam will make it to work during a snowstorm, because she will be at the Center long before the storm hits! She never stops caring for her residents whether she is on or off duty. Congratulations Pam!

With the start of the New Year comes the start of a new Legislative Session. With over 30 new legislators this year, now is a prime time to educate them and make our case.

Our need for adequate reimbursement is greater than ever. Medicaid continues to underfund long term care providers by over $7 billion nationally. The projected Medicaid shortfall in South Dakota is now approximately $38.9 million or $30.05 per Medicaid patient per day according to the annual study, A Report on Shortfalls in Medicaid Funding for Nursing Center Care. This is the largest shortfall reported nationally and for South Dakota since the inception of the study in 1999.

After the legislature adjourned Sine Die, last March, SDHCA never stopped telling "Our Story". The other week I met with Senator Brown, former Chairman of Appropriations, and now President Pro Tempore. Senator Brown has been an ardent proponent of SDHCA and based on our discussion, I know he will continue to be one of our greatest allies this Session.

SDHCA will continue to work closely with all legislative leaders including Senator Peters, now Chair of Appropriations, and Senator Olson, who continues in his capacity as the Majority Leader. We are also very glad to welcome back  our "shining sword", Senator Van Gerpen, to Pierre.

Our work with the Executive Branch continues unabated as well. On January 22nd, SDHCA will hold a joint meeting of our Legislative Committee and Board of Directors in Pierre. DSS Secretary Kim Malsam-Rysdon will be in attendance along with the Governor's top advisor, Deb Bowman. Later that day we will meet with Governor Daugaard at the Capitol. That evening we will host our annual Legislative Reception with SDHCA Members converging upon our Capitol City to "Tell Our Story" and twist some arms too!

Sincerely,

Study Quantifies How Growth Of Assisted Living Affected Nursing Homes

NCAL

A 10 percent increase in assisted living capacity was associated with a 1.4 percent decline in private-pay nursing occupancy and a 0.2-0.6 percent increase in patient acuity, according to a just-published analysis of 1993-97 data from 13 states. Titled "Assisted Living Expansion and the Market for Nursing Home Care," the study appears in the December 2012 edition of Health Services Research. Read More

Tablets May Make Reading Easier For Seniors

New York Times

"The New Old Age" blog reported that seniors "see better with tablets' adjustable type size," according to research presented last month at an ophthalmology meeting. These findings are "based on tests conducted with 66 adults age 50 and over: older people read faster (a mean reading speed of 128 words per minute) when using an iPad, compared to a newspaper with the same 10-point font size (114 words per minute)." And, "when the font was increased to 18 points -- easy to do on an iPad -- reading speed increased to 137 words per minute." Read more.

Study: Contact Precautions Lead To Better Hand Hygiene

McKnight's LTC News

"Contact precautions for patients" with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) "led to healthcare workers practicing better hand hygiene," according to a study slated for publication in the January issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology. The study team had "secret shoppers" observe employees at "four hospitals performing routine care over 19 months. They found contact precautions, which require patients to be isolated or grouped with other patients with influenced how healthcare workers acted." Hospital personnel were "less likely to visit patients" with MRSA or other "antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as Clostridium difficile," but they were "15.8% more likely to practice hand hygiene" after visiting patients who were under contact precautions. "Water Clubs" May Improve Quality Of Life In The Elderly

McKnight's LTC News

McKnight's editor James M. Berklan writes, "It turns out that there are specific benefits to having seniors in long-term care settings gather regularly to drink water," according to a study conducted by "British researchers. 'Water clubs' bring about better hydration, fewer falls, a better sense of well-being and a better general quality of life," the study found. "Beyond the clinical and physiological benefits of drinking two atoms of hydrogen attached to one oxygen [atom], the researchers found that the social aspects of the seniors coming together had perhaps just as profound an effect." Tips For A Better Memory Released

McKnight's LTC News

Dr. Alice Vestergaard of Ashford University has created "10 Tips for a Better Memory." The tips are designed to help the brain adapt, because as Vestergaard puts it, "The great news is that scientists now know that the brain is constantly rewiring itself, adapting and growing new brain cells, even throughout the aging process...The more people challenge and exercise the brain, the less likely they will be to develop brain damaging disease later in life." CDC: More People Having Issues With Daily Activities

McKnight's LTC News

"More adults are struggling with basic activities of daily living (ADLs), according to research from the Centers from Disease Control & Prevention." According to the survey, "While the data excludes those already in nursing homes, it found that the average percentage of adults who had at least one ADL limit increased 0.2 percentage points to 2.2% in 2011. Every age group had a higher percentage of people reporting ADL limits." Read more.
