Premier Lighting Case Study: LED Library Retrofit

Customer Profile:

The Chisago Lakes Library in Chisago City is part of the East Central Library System and serves primarily the Chisago Lakes Area of Chisago City, Lindstrom, Center City, Shafer and Taylors Falls as well as the other surrounding townships.

Goal:

As with many buildings relying on local outside support, conserving dollars and supporting the environment through conservation is an important concept. The Library contacted Premier Lighting to evaluate options for both interior and exterior lighting. Inside the building, reducing costs, improving lighting and eliminating changing the T8 fixture ballasts was important to them. For the exterior, improved lighting to increase visibility for the building as well as safety for visitors was a desired outcome.

Solution:

Premier met with the Library individuals responsible for facility maintenance to discuss various options, as well as meeting with the Board of Directors to discuss financial aspects and energy saving opportunities. The various attributes and choices among LED T8 lamps were reviewed and Type D (works with or without the ballast) was elected. The exterior parking and wallpack fixtures were also retrofitted to new LED fixtures.

LED vs. HID

LEDs have gotten a great deal of attention lately, but do they really have what it takes to outperform the tried-and-true favorites in the HID category? Let's find out...

In the past, HID lights were often the go-to choice in applications where a large amount of visible light was needed in a sizeable area. For instance, they're often found in streetlights, gymnasiums, stadiums, warehouses, and in high-ceilinged buildings. HID lights, however, are not a perfect solution as the light they produce isn't always pleasing to the eye and many require an extended warm up time. Thanks to technological advancements, LEDs are now a viable alternative in many HID applications - although, they also come with their own set of pros and cons.

8 Foot LED T8 Replacement for T12HO T8HO R17d Base

Finally there is an easy solution for retrofitting 8' T8HO and T12HO fluorescent lamps. Commonly found in sign lighting among other commercial applications, T8HO and T12HO fluorescent lamps have an R17d double recessed contact base. Trying to retrofit these fixtures with standard LED T8 lamps can be troublesome, particularly in fixtures where changing the socket to standard non-shunted can be difficult if not impossible.
