Premier Lighting Case Study: HID Pole Light LED Retrofit

Customer Profile:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) is a Christian restorationist church that is considered by its followers to be the restoration of the original church founded by Jesus Christ. The church is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has established congregations and built temples worldwide.

Goal:

Those in charge of the Minnesota LDS congregations wanted to take a look at options for their outdoor pole lighting. Their existing HID poles were inefficient and did not provide sufficient lighting to secure the facilities. Between the ballasts and HID lamps themselves, they were looking to cut down on the frequency of servicing the fixtures.

Solution:

Premier's analysis concluded that the best solution would be to keep the existing pole fixtures but retrofit them to LED. The majority of the fixtures were a shoebox with 250W metal halide bulbs within that were facing downward, so a 180° LED Arc Cob was the ideal choice. A portion of the HID lamps were omni-directional, so 360° LED Omni Cobs were necessary for this application. For both solutions, the HID ballast was bypassed and the LED bulbs were screwed in direct.

Health Concerns from LED Street Lighting?

In June of 2016, the American Medical Association (AMA) released a statement that some LED lights are harmful when used as a street light. The official AMA statement on the effects of LED street lighting has caused quite a stir in the lighting industry. There have been several responses from lighting organizations debunking the AMA report, but as with any statement much of it is an opinion. So in an effort to clear this up, we'll look at this statement from both sides.

"Some LED lights are harmful when used as a street light"

There are so many varieties of LED lights that the word some throws off the statement from the start.

"High-intensity LED lighting emit a large amount of blue light that appears white to the naked eye and creates worse nighttime glare than conventional lighting. Discomfort and disability from intense blue-rich LED lighting can decrease visual acuity and safety, resulting in concerns and creating a road hazard."

Some LED lights do produce blue light, but that color can be controlled. Glare is a function of the light fixture performance and placement, not necessarily the light source itself.
