Premier Lighting Case Study: Retrofitting HID to Fluorescent to LED

After: New LED Highbay Fixtures
Goal:
Much like Frattalone from our previous lighting retrofit case study, Premier had retrofitted Wallace Carlson's HID lighting to fluorescent back in 2007. With eight years passing and the fluorescent lamps and ballasts beginning to die out, it became prudent to consider whether the time was right to move on from the fluorescent high-bays and retrofit them with LED.
Assessment:
The HID retrofit to fluorescent that Premier advised back in 2007 improved light levels and resulted in a one-year payback. But much had changed at Wallace Carlson in eight years. Their facility underwent a renovation, with their floor space reconfigured to compensate for new printing machines that were brought in. In addition to the fluorescent high bays Premier installed in 2007, Wallace Carlson had put up task lighting over the new machines that hung down from the ceiling closer to the floor. This caused the work space to look cluttered. All this meant that Wallace Carlson was not only seeking energy savings and light level improvements, but an improved look of the space by keeping all the fixtures mounted at bar joist level.
Solution:
Considering the mess of fluorescent light fixtures, Premier opted for a clean slate to ensure the space was optimized with LED. All of the fluorescent highbays and hanging task lights were taken out. New LED highbay fixtures were then installed at bar joist levels.

LED PL and LED T8 Combo Drive Technology is here

A much-discussed LED technology has finally come to fruition. There are now Combo Drive LED T8 lamps in the marketplace that work on both line voltage and with fluorescent ballasts. In the past few years, many lesser-known and new to the market manufacturers with minimal lighting knowledge attempted to design lamps in hopes of being the first with this functionality, but were unsuccessful. In the case of some, their inventions went up in smoke (literally). After arduous testing, the technology is now viable for LED T8 lamps as well as LED Plug-in lamps.
In the past few years as LED T8's grew in popularity, customers clamored for an LED T8 that was ballast-compatible as well as able to wire up direct to line voltage. Essentially a combination of Type A (ballast compatible) and Type B (ballast bypass) LED tubes. This would allow for a quick install initially by just taking out the fluorescent bulb and installing the LED T8 without touching the ballast. Then when the ballast dies, the LED T8 could wire direct to 120-277V line voltage after the ballast was bypassed.
