Premier Lighting Case Study:  Target Field LED Lighting

New LED Lighting at Target Field

Goal:

Despite the stadium being new, inefficient metal halides were present in various parts of the stadium and needed to be switched out to LED. These spots included the underground parking garage and the bus loading area, which were the focus of the project.

Assessment:

The fixtures in the target areas were being lit with 175 watt metal halide bulbs. These metal halides only have a life span of 20,000 hours and require use of a ballast to function, all of which add up to exorbitant maintenance costs. In addition, the light levels they produce quickly deteriorate over time, to the tune of a 60% loss in lumens. As these light levels fade, the color of the lamps change as well.

LED Horticultural Lights vs. Traditional HPS Grow Lights

With each passing day, LED's dominance in the lighting market grows exponentially. Thus it should be no surprise to learn that horticultural lighting is phasing out inefficient traditional high pressure sodium for superior LED grow lamps. Energy-efficiency and light output are factors in this, as they always are. But as we learn more about the science of horticulture, we understand how fine-tuned LED lighting can truly be the optimal grow light solution.

How do plants use light? Plants convert incoming light into chemical energy by using chlorophyll in leaves to absorb only the blue and red wavelength portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. No other wavelengths have any use to the plant.

Hubbell's NutriLED grow light fixture has taken horticultural lighting to the next level by utilizing solid state LED lighting to focus on only the relevant wavelengths. 100% of the NutriLED light output is usable by plants, triggering healthy plant responses and increasing yield while minimizing cost. At the same time, most of the HID light output is wasted; just 20% of a 600W HPS' light output is useful for plant growth.

LED Specialty Bulbs

The MyNature Coastal LED PAR30 is certified by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, as it is less disruptive to sea turtles nesting and hatching efforts. Traditional beachfront lighting is known to disorient the turtles, who mistake that light for the moon. Sea turtles rely on the light of the moon to guide them back to the ocean. Fortunately, the amber-colored ambient lighting from the MyNature Coastal LED ensures the sea turtles can find their way home.

Plants need light to grow and while natural sunlight is optimal, it is not always available. The MyNature Grow LED lets you play Mother Nature, controlling the hours of day vs. night.
