Art Gallery Re-illuminated

The Value of Proper Lighting-Makes Exhibits "Pop"!

Gustaf's Up North Gallery, in Lindstrom, MN has been in business since 1973, the longest running independent art gallery of its kind in Minnesota.  With over 6,000 square feet of gallery space, Up North represents professional regional artists, and includes a gallery dedicated to art and gifts designed and crafted from the Scandinavian countries (Lindstrom has been called "Minnesota's Little Sweden").

Owners Mary Ann and John Jindra recognize the value proper lighting brings to displaying art work. To assist them with lighting enhancements, they contacted Premier Lighting.  Premier Lighting visited Up North and conducted a complete review and audit of the existing lighting system.  They understand how color (the Kelvin value of lamps) can impact how a piece of art displays.  This played an important role in how Premier Lighting approached solutions for the gallery.

Currently, the artwork at the gallery is illuminated with a variety of lamps, primarily 65W BR30 incandescent lamps and fixtures. With over 6,000 square feet of gallery space, several different lighting options were considered.  Premier Lighting trialed a variety of lamp options including PAR and BR lamps, with a variety of different color temperatures from 2400K to 4100K.  With so many different art styles, from paintings to sculptures to fabric and glass, different needs had to be met.

Ultimately this retrofit project was divided into smaller individual projects.  The first phase was to highlight the central exhibits of the Main gallery.Currently illuminated by a variety of incandescent lamps, Premier demonstrated to  Up North how an LED PAR 38 lamp could make these exhibits "pop".  Another concern of Up North was the heat generated by the incandescent lamps.  LED also solves that issue.

For a modest product cost and simple retrofit installation, the central exhibits of the Main Gallery are a focal point as visitors enter the building.  With a rebate from CEE that covered 55% of the project cost, Up North improved their lighting and experienced over an 80% return on investment (ROI), a payback of less than 1.25 years.

Up North Gallery is now moving on to retrofitting additional gallery spaces with LED lamps to enhance the fine and exquisite items of arts and crafts they display. They are excited about the results they have experienced and the results and savings they will experience soon!

Ferguson, Multi-Phase Lighting Upgrade

Lower Wattage T8's, T8 Highbays & LED's

Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, in Golden Valley within the past six months, working with Premier Lighting completed five lighting retrofit projects.  The projects involved re-lamping the office areas from 32 Watt 4' T8 lamps to 28 Watt 4' T8 lamps, replacing 400 Watt Metal Halides in the warehouse with 6-Lamp T8 highbays, utilizing motion sensors to optimize the energy savings, then a three phase approach to retrofitting the showroom lighting.  The showroom was using a variety of halogen and incandescent lamps so Premier Lighting replaced them with LED Lamps that looked similar to incandescent, but last a lot longer and significantly reduce the energy consumption.

The total annual energy savings for all five projects was approximately $34,750, with an overall payback of around 1 year!

Along with the energy savings and enhanced light quality from the LED lamps installed in the showrooms, one unforeseen benefit of the LED Showroom lighting retrofit projects was for Ferguson's customers.  After the conversion customers of Ferguson's were able to see the positive effects of LED lighting in a practical application and asked questions about options, savings and availability of LED lighting for their lighting purchases.

Premier Lighting prepared a detailed energy analysis, implemented the recommendations and processed the rebate applications associated with the projects.  As a result Ferguson received a rebate of around $40,000!
