LED Elevator Indicator Lighting

Going up!  Energy and maintenance cost going down!

The IDS Center opened in 1972 in Minneapolis, and it is the tallest building in Minnesota at 792 feet.  There are 51 floors and 27 elevators to access them.  With so many options to choose from they had to come up with a way to notify users when an elevator is available.  This was done using a "light box" above each elevator that contained incandescent indicator lights.

When an elevator is ready to go, the light box on the top of the elevator door lights up indicating that the elevator is ready to use.  That system works great, but when you have to maintain hundreds of incandescent bulbs over years of use there is significant cost associated with that.  In addition the incandescent lights cause hot spots in the light box.

That's where Premier Lighting stepped in.  IDS Center wanted to have a uniformly lit light box that would last longer and save money.  The solution Premier Lighting implemented was to remove the existing incandescent light bulbs and install an LED panel.  The LED panel is expected to last 10-20 times longer than the incandescent fixture, save 80% in energy costs and provided even illumination as you will see in the pictures below:

Church Activity Center, Lighting Enhancement

Improved foot candles and light uniformity

Crossroads Evangelical Covenant Church, Forest Lake, long has had a youth ministry that includes education and physical activity.  As part of this ministry, Crossroads Activity Center serves both needs.  The Activity Center includes a gymnasium that is approximately 6400 square feet, with a ceiling height of 36 feet.

As with many similar facilities, the Activity Center gym was illuminated with 320 watt metal halide fixtures, in this case 12 fixtures.  One of Crossroads' goals was to improve the Activity Center lighting while saving energy and energy costs.  Premier Lighting met with church leaders and proposed replacing the existing metal halide fixtures with new fluorescent T8 fixtures.  The new fixtures included enhanced aluminum reflectors, high power ballasts and high efficiency lamps.  Wire guards were included to protect the lamps and fixtures in this high energy facility!

Before (320 Watt Metal Halide Fixtures)

Light meter readings of the facility prior to the retrofit were 13 foot candles to 16 foot candles, and there were several areas of the gym floor with shadows.  Following the retrofit, light meter readings ranged from 26 to 34 foot candles and the leaders commented on the improved lighting and the uniformity of lighting.

After (6-Lamp T8 High-Bay Fixtures)

Further, Premier Lighting assisted Crossroads Church with obtaining a rebate from Connexus which was a 30% savings on project materials while enjoying over a 40% improvement in lighting levels.  Additionally, with the T8 lamps, there is not the "re-strike" time associated with metal halide fixtures.

As a result of the retrofit project, Crossroads Activity Center now enjoys better lighting while saving energy and maintenance time.

7 Benefits of LED Lighting for Signs

When it comes to illuminated signage for your business, you have three main choices: neon, fluorescent, or LED. Both neon and fluorescent signs have a long history and have proven themselves reliable, yet lately LEDs have gained attention for their colorful and creative displays.
