A Unique LED Lighting Retrofit

Shoebox Up light

Premier Lighting recently had an opportunity to work with St. Paul Youth Services, a unique organization, with a unique lighting situation.   St. Paul Youth Services, provides support to parents and youth that have displayed high risk behavior, holding the young people accountable for their actions and giving them the chance to learn from their mistakes. They provide a diverse group of people, working together, to produce better results with community partnerships.

The lighting in the office area was using a 400 watt metal halide, shoe box fixture attached to a work station cabinet directed upward towards the ceiling.  A 400 watt shoe box fixture is typically used as a parking lot fixture and then to have the fixture directed upward and reflecting off of the ceiling was a unique installation.

The reason the 400 watt shoe box fixtures were originally installed on the cabinets is because the office area presented a unique situation which would not allow fixtures to be mounted to the ceilings.  The 400 watt metal halide shoe box fixture provided adequate light levels but, presented other operating  concerns, which was the reason Premier Lighting received a call to find a better solution.

Premier Lighting recommended a LED retrofit panel that would utilize the existing shoe box fixture, but improve the performance significantly and provide other benefits for St. Paul Youth (see table below).

Energy Saving Outdoor Lighting Solutions: Walkway Lighting
Light-Fights-HID-vs-FLUORESCENT

For the third post in our Energy Saving Outdoor Lighting series, we're going to focus on walkway lighting, which is used as a decorative element and to help people safely navigate a path. Walkway lighting also creates a warm, welcoming ambiance that makes visitors feel comfortable and encourages them to remain on your property. If you have a business, creating this mood can mean the difference between having patrons at all hours or losing significant potential customers at dusk. Still, if you really want your walkway lighting to pay off, you have to think about energy efficiency as well, because no one wants their gorgeous, new lights to come with a hefty electric bill or contribute to environmental harm.

The two major types of walkway lights are bollards and post lights. So, let's take a look at each kind and what sorts of energy saving features are available.  Read More...
