I work with job seekers on a daily basis as a recruiter in the tech industry. Often times, candidates are unaware of a few tactics that can give them competitive edge in this market.

This difference between an active job seeker versus and passive job seeker is their work status. An active job seeker is unemployed, unsatisfied in their current role or a reduction in force is imminent whereas a passive job seeker isn't necessarily looking for a new job.

As a recruiter, it is my job to find the match a candidate's credentials to a relevant role. In today's market, a perfect resume may not be enough and candidates need to find ways to differentiate themselves from other great resumes. Verizon just paid $4.4 billion for AOL, and it wasn't to send email to your grandmother. Verizon bought AOL for its ad tech business; the revenue from this business grew at over 40% last November and 21% in its most recent quarter reports the Verge.

With over 55% of U.S. internet usage now on mobile, and this so-called 'Mobile Majority' spends 86% of their time in applications. Add to that the trend of moving from three to five screens which requires an app centric environment that connects all these devices from phone and laptop to connected TV and wearable devices, all powered by apps.

The U.S. tech industry totaled 6.5 million employees at the end of 2014 according to CompTIA's Cyberstates report. The top five states by tech industry employment are: California, Texas, New York, Florida, and Massachusetts.

Payroll / GDP

The tech industry's impact on the U.S. GDP is 7.1%. Tech salaries tend to be double or more that of the average private sector worker. That adds up! Tech companies accounted for 20% of California's private sector payroll, and 38% of U.S. states had more than 10% of their payroll coming from the tech industry.

Growth

Worldwide IT spending is forecast to exceed $3.6 trillion according to Gartner ($3.7 trillion according to IDC) in 2015. Gartner also forecasts global growth rate at 3.1% this year (CompTIA's consensus forecast projects 5.0% growth).

The latest flavor I noticed was the BPTW for Millennials. Given that Millennials are now the largest workforce in America, this is an important recognition.

Springtime in the mountains and it's raining, quite a bit. This Friday, May 15th was the Bike to Work Day Workplace Challenge put on by Mountain Rides.

Redfish Technology made a brave attempt but will have to take a rain check this year on meeting full participation. The Bike to Work Day Workplace Challenge was a challenge for some of the staff, faced with a fair amount of rain during the morning.

Improved Hiring, Tech Sector Nearing Full Employment 

 
The job market hired more than predicted, but the unemployment rate stayed at 5.5% as more people rejoined the workforce. Tech Unemployment keeps going down and hit 1.9% last month, the lowest since June 2008. That's nearly three times lower unemployment tan in the tech sectors. With the Tech Sector nearing full employment, hiring continues to get more competitive.

"Staffing firms are being hired to fill excess jobs that HR teams can't fill internally either due to overall challenging conditions or lack of internal recruiting time and resources especially for these jobs with niche skill sets," Meredith Amdur, president and CEO of Wanted was quoted as saying in the ERE.net article Employers Turning to Agencies to Fill Toughest Jobs.
