Tanny O'Haley, Senior Programmer - Banking/Financial Services
Tanny O'Haley

Enlisted by the visionaries of this stealth-mode Banking/Financial Services startup, Redfish has been recruiting for a variety of their early hires. Three years in the making, this privately-funded company is realizing the revolutionary idea of bringing banking services to the international underclass. Founded on the idea that we are all part of the global community, and that we can chose to come together and make the world a better place, GlobeOne is harnessing the power of state of the art technology, to change the paradigm of financial services and creating the first true global network. On this search, the task was to find a very senior web developer with mastery of 3-tier architecture and a front-end heavy-weight. This senior web developer would have an amazing eye for detail and user experience, and be steeped in responsive design across devices. The developer would understand core optimization, caching, CDN concepts, and be adept at using HTML5, CSS3, to create a one-page interactive experience. Ideally the candidate would have financial technology applications experience and a yearning to make a difference in the world.

Tanny O'Haley studied Computer Programming at the Control Data Institute in Los Angeles and he studied Biblical Greek and Hebrew at the L.I.F.E. Bible College. Initially interested in automotive styling, he maintains a keen interest in automobile design, but his passion is bleeding edge technology. Tanny has been coding websites and web applications in javascript, HTML, HTML5, XHTML, CSS, CSS3, XML, XSLT, and JSON since the late 1990s. He has created his own JavaScript frameworks and has used jQuery, Prototype, Dojo, Bootstrap, and Angularjs; he's used over 29 different computer programming languages in his career, two of which he created. Tanny has spent most of his career in the financial sector and has developed a great expertise in responsive web design, javascript, and mobile web apps for tablets and phone. A voracious reader, Tanny keeps up with new web technologies, including performance techniques, responsive design, responsive images, object oriented JavaScript, form usability, video, and ADA usability issues. Tanny knows he has a purpose, and gathering his financial sector web development expertise for this company's extraordinary mission seems like a match made in Heaven.

"Meredith was great! She was patient with me and worked hard to make sure that GlobeOne and I were a good fit for my unique skill-set and their management style." - Tanny O'Haley

THE TOP 5 REASONS
NOT TO ACCEPT A COUNTER OFFER

By Mike Curry, Tech Recruiter

So you find yourself with an offer from a new company, and whether you actively solicit a counter or you simply allow one to come, you are playing with fire. It is a highly risky move to accept a counter offer. These are the main reasons not to accept a counter offer.

1. Your Manager is Going to Hate You.

Okay, hate may be strong but s/he is not going to be happy with you. Once the relief that you are staying and that the projects underway haven't been sabotaged by a sudden departure, negative feelings are going to seep in. The manager will likely harbor feelings of doubt about whether you solicited an offer just for leverage. S/he may worry that this incident will let loose a chain reaction, with others taking a stab at it. There's going to be second guessing about whether you may try this again. Such a move will definitely be perceived as a breach of trust.

2. Resentment Complicates Relationships. Red Arrow

DATA DATA EVERYWHERE, WOULD YOU LIKE A DRINK?

Data proliferation! Yep and proliferation of articles on what to do with it ... Here's one simply celebrating some cool data solution companies! - Great companies we are recruiting for!

Depending on what data gets served up to you, you may find that IDC predicts at our current rate of doubling information every 1.5 years that we will generate 40 zettabytes (ZB) of data by 2020. Of perhaps your first SERP will lead you to an article with Gartner's prediction that enterprise data will grow 650 percent in the next five years. Check out the fun real-time graphic data counter from MapR (above).

Eighty percent of data is unstructured, but even structured data can be overwhelming at this growth rate. We are all bombarded by more and more options of client, lead, purchasing, website, population, and other data to track, analyze, summarize, and act upon (so long as paralysis hasn't set in due to information overload).

SOCIAL RECRUITING - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Buzz buzz buzz - Social Recruiting is all the buzz.

But is it more than a fashion trend to catch your attention? Will it really help you to hire? What do you really need to know about social recruiting?

So what is social recruiting?

It's called having a conversation -

Social recruiting has been around since before there was a term called social recruiting. It's basic human nature to talk about opportunities to your friends and people you like. And there's an obvious head start in terms of cultural fit if you are reaching like-minded people through your network, so yes, social recruiting is an important way to acquire new talent.

Sometimes offering an incentive -

But let's face it, those conversations often take a back seat to discussions about life, the family, football, politics, the weekend plans. And so the referral bonus was invented to incentivize employees to be thinking about who they know who would be a good fit within the company, to have these conversations with the people they know, and to network with the goal of finding new hires.

THE GETTING HIRED ELEVATOR SPEECH

When is the last time you took an elevator?

Some of you are rocking the views from your elevator ride! Some folks are taking the stairs wearing their activity tracker. Some folks have made successful careers in places where elevators are hard to find (yippee!), or where they stay in their fuzzy bunny slippers all day (ahhh). Whatever your case, do you have an elevator speech?

Yeah, yeah we all know what an elevator speech is...

That said, have you heard a really good one lately? Were you compelling to action? Did the person stay in your memory? Can you retell it yourself? If yes, then indeed it was a good one. Your elevator speech needs to be clear and compelling, and make a lasting impression.

What is your intention?

Keep your intention in mind. You often hear that this elevator pitch should be memorized and rehearsed, and having it come to mind quickly without searching for your words may be handy but every situation is different.

How do you manifest this? ...Red Arrow
THE KEY TO SUCCESS? GRIT
Redfish Team Thought Leadership, Stimulating Ideas, and Innovation Discussions
The Key to Success? Grit

This week the team considered success and predictors of success. We listened to Angela Lee Duckworth's TED Talk: The Key to Success? Grit.

"This definitely pertains to the job of recruiting, and anything in life," shared Mike Curry, Tech Recruiter at Redfish. "For me growing up with sports, coaches preach you have to work to be great. You hear it in sports all the time, but less in the professional world. You don't always come out of the gates hot, what it takes to be successful is to identify and concentrate on your goal and put everything you've got into working at it. You have to want to succeed more than you hate to fail. And it helps to have a junk yard dog attitude."
