An Nguyen, Software Engineer - Wearable Health Technology
An Nguyen, Software Engineer - Wearable Health Technology

This socially responsible company with a goal of motivating users to improve their fitness is a favorite to recruit for. The team made up of world-class game designers, artists, and cutting-edge technologists is backed by an incredible leadership team. They are passionate about inventing fun, approachable, and mainstream products that will make a meaningful difference in people's lives. Through a combination of technology, psychology and game design the company integrates their consumer wearable product into everyday activities like exercise. Equally important, they are creating a company culture and an environment where people look forward to coming to work in the morning. When the VP of Software Engineering needed to build out his team recently he tapped Redfish Technology to find a Backend Engineer. The role would be building APIs and integrating external data sources. The ideal candidate would have experience building REST APIs and familiarity with AWS and NoSQL databases. Additionally the company was looking for someone who was equally enthusiastic about their social mission.

An Nguyen is a strong coder and a passionate engineer. Originally studying chemistry at Cal Berkeley, his love of software led him to transfer to the California State University Computer Science department where he worked as a student assistant and has been on the Dean's list for two years as he completes his CS degree. An's experience includes a full-time internship doing Python fullstack development and the creation of many independent projects and apps in C, Python and Java. He is outgoing and involved in activities ranging from cultural ambassador on campus to environmental clean-up and restoration to tutoring math and science. A high performer, An has been awarded a Math and Computer Department Scholarship at CSU, and was inducted into the Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor society. An jumped at the opportunity to join this growth-mode health-tech company that shares a passion for healthy living and healthy code!

"Working with Redfish Technology was the best and fastest recruiting experience I have ever had. Meredith, my recruiter, provided me with prompt feedback, encouragement and the necessary resources at every step in the process. I also loved the check-in call I received afterward. Throughout the process, it helped to know that your recruiter is on your side and looking out for your success. I hope to have more chances to work with Redfish in the future." - An Nguyen

The dog days of summer have gone but tech hiring remains hot.

 - the Redfish Team
CREATING A BLUE RIBBON COMPANY CULTURE
By Heidi Clark, CHO & Rob Reeves,  CEO

Rob & Heidi"When you are doing it right, your staff will let you know," asserts Rob Reeves, CEO at Redfish Technology - an award-winning nationwide tech recruiting company. "If you aren't hearing appreciation and feeling the love, you need to take a look at what you are creating."

The focus on company culture is an investment worth making on many fronts.

Attracting and retaining talented, dedicated staff is all the more easy when people know about your company and want to work for you. "Recruiting is a tough business, and it takes very intelligent and motivated professionals to do the job well," reflects Heidi Clark, CHO at Redfish. "Keeping employee turnover down and having a pipeline of talent is as important for our business as it is for our clients, and having a company renowned as a great place to work makes that much easier to manage."

TECH TRENDS SEMANTIC TECHNOLOGY

Semantic Intelligence Redfish Technology works with some very interesting technology companies, and by virtue of this arena we meet a lot of interesting people. Part of the allure of tech recruiting is the opportunity to be involved with so many exciting people and companies, and typically at especially exciting growth phases in their trajectory.

Semantic technology is a great example. Expert System, a unique big data firm specialized in semantic intelligence technology, is a growth-mode client leading the industry with cutting-edge patented technology that allows for semantic differentiation in big data.

Semantic technology solves the problem of managing and getting value out of the mega-oodles of unstructured information throughout the enterprise. We enjoyed their white paper on semantic technology trends for 2014.

SAYING I DO TO THE RECRUITING PROCESS

Say I Do The hardest part of recruiting is not finding the specific purple squirrel. It is not sourcing and screening candidates. It is not communicating the corporate culture or the company mission. It is not coordinating telephone and onsite interviews. It's not even negotiating the employment package. It's getting the commitment of the hiring powers.

Funny how this should be the easy part. Once a decision to hire has been made, once the method by which that hiring process will be conducted has been decided, the company should be ready to roll. But it is not always the case.

"Companies and hiring managers need to understand and give themselves to the hiring process knowing it will take time away from everyday operations," states Mike Curry, Tech Recruiter at Redfish Technology. "It is a commitment, just like when a company hires a web developer, that website can't be developed in a vacuum, it requires effective, timely communication from the client company in order to be successful."

TEN THINGS YOU NEED TO DO IN YOUR JOB SEARCH

TenDo you find yourself looking for a new career opportunity? Has it been a while? Here are ten things you should do in your job search.

1. Set aside time every day to perform your job searching activities.

An active job search requires dedication. How much time will it take? That depends on your situation and your motivation. If you are working, it may be only 30-60 minutes per day; if you are out of work and are motivated to find a job soon, then you should consider your job search a full-time activity.

2. Do Some Self-Assessment.

Take a good hard look at yourself. What are your best attributes? What are your least developed ones? Where do you excel? What do you bring to the table? What are you accomplishments?  Quantify these. This exercise is imperative for re-vamping your resume and preparing for interviews, but more importantly this type of self-assessment should allow you to take a fresh look at the kind of work and industries that you want to pursue.

3. Determine your goals... Red Arrow
RESUMES - LIPSTICK ON A PIG
If you Embellish, it will be a Blemish, or Worse
  Lipstick on a pig?
The results of a recent Career Builder survey have been splattered all over the internet in the last several days. The responses reveal that 58% of employers have caught a lie on a resume; and 33 % said they have seen an increase in resume embellishments post-recession.

The poll found that this transgressions include embellished skill set (57%), embellished responsibilities (55%), dates of employment (42%), job title (34%), academic degree (33%), companies worked (26%), and accolades/awards (18%). It is very interestingly the industry that finds the most fibbing is financial services (eh-hem) at 73%! But Information Technology came in a 63%, and Health Care at 63%.

These numbers seem high but they are covering a wide range of candidates. In our experience in high tech recruiting, the biggest resume issues are consistency, accuracy, dates, titles, technical skills, and degrees and certifications.
