Alex Jolicoeur,
Backend Software Engineer - Mobile Apps

The VP of Engineering of this privately-held, leading global music entertainment platform company in the Bay Area commissioned Redfish Technology to find a Python Server/Backend Engineer. The company is creating the next and most powerful iteration of music talent via mobile, combining the power of broadcast talent programs, interactive music gaming, content creation and crowd-sourced talent discovery - and counts millions of users. Specifically the company required someone with the skills to build the company's next-generation data model and APIs for mobile and web clients. The engineer would be part of growing and maturing the server team's processes and tools for rock-solid development in a dynamic workplace. Cultural fit was paramount as well; the ideal candidate would share a passion of listening to music and participating in the music experience.

A banana slug with a bachelor of Computer Science degree, Redfish recruiter Meredith Dean knew Alex Jolicoeur was a great fit. With a passion for back-end systems and mobile applications, Alex has experience as a Software Engineering and iOS Developer with companies in the mobile gaming for customer engagement sector, mobile messaging and video conferencing sector, where he used PHP to implement 3rd party API's (Mailgun, Twilio). He has also used Django, Python and JavaScript to perform optimization and redefinition of the Learning and Experimental Economics Projects website at his alma mater, the University of Santa Cruz. Alex is a resourceful self-starter with strong problem solving, analytical, and research skills, a music aficionado, and an eager explorer of open source, algorithm analysis, database systems, functional programming, graphics, and new technologies.

"Meredith connected me with a company for a position that not only reflected the skills on my résumé, but also my interests in the software and start-up environment. I was very grateful to have someone so friendly, driven, and communicative help me with my job search. I am thankful to Meredith, and all of Redfish Technology for helping to find the right job for me, at a company where I know I can learn and grow as a professional!" - Alex Jolicoeur

SHOULD YOU WORK FOR A STARTUP?
By Redfish Technology Executive Recruiters

Recruiting talent for big companies and startups in various stages of development usually means searching for talent with different profiles. The technical skills needed may be the same for both types of companies, but beyond skill sets, personality makes a crucial difference in terms of the talent sought.

Startups are not for everyone.

Every startup is different but regardless of the stage of the company, by nature these budding companies are typically not going to offer the same employment opportunities as large, established corporations.

Startups tend to be in unique niches in often untested waters, they are creating disruptive exciting technologies and new business models. They attract creative, confident risk-takers and strive to attract agile innovators who thrive on finding new solutions and making things happen.

Pay vs Payoff

TECH TRENDS ADTECH COMPANIES ARE HOT!

Ad technology companies are hot, with some selling for as much as eight times what they earn before taxes. With the massive migration to mobile, there's a particular run on mobile adtech firms.

Adtech merger and acquisition activity was furious in 2011 (60 deals valued at a total of $4.5 billion according to investment bank Coady Diemar Partners). 2012 saw reduced activity (41 deals totaling $396 million) but in the first half of 2013 activity was looking on par with 2011 in number of deals (34 adtech deals totaling $1.25 billion). And according to investment bank Luma Partners, 74 new display-ad-technology companies were created in 2011 and 2012.

Global ERP players are acquiring adtech companies. Oracle, SAP, and Microsoft have an ideal vantage point into leveraging adtech within their ERP packages. In fact SAP has invested in adtech companies along the lines of Criteo, Marin Software, and OpenX. Oracle has an agreement to acquire BlueKai, a leading data management platform and data marketplace. Microsoft has spent $6.3 billion on adtech acquisitions over the last decade before shifting focus to search and divesting.

INNOVATION TRENDS -
CROWDFUNDING INDUSTRY DISRUPTION

At a size estimated to be between nearly $4 billion and some estimates indicate up to $300 billion, the crowdfunding market is a game-changer. Innovative companies are using crowdfunding for new ways to self-finance of course.

Peer-to-peer lending platforms such as Prosper, Lending Club and Funding Circle are also providing consumer and small business credit where banks and other institutions are no longer taking as active a role.

Real estate crowdfunding is a tool useful in financing endeavors such as build-to-suit, distressed property re-hab, and strip mall renovation. Check out Groundbreaker, Crowdstreet, and RealtyMogul to see the full ray of projects that are crowd-financeable.

WABI SABI JOB - HUNTING FOR THE PERFECT JOB?

Is there a perfect job? What would and how could it be? What is Wabi Sabi job search?

As headhunters, i.e. corporate matchmakers bringing together the right candidate for the right position, you might expect to hear us say that there is a perfect job. But really no job is perfect on its own, no company is perfect in isolation, and no candidate represents the pinnacle of perfection.

The Wabi Sabi concept is abstract and hard to pin down but has been boiled down by some as "everything is imperfect, incomplete and impermanent". This applies to jobs, bosses, companies, products, and, well 'everything'.

So rather than expecting a perfect job, spend real time being introspective and identifying what you are good at that you love to do. Now look for a fantastic match between you as the candidate, and the company and the opportunities associated with a specific role. If you can find the synergy in the imperfect parts, you may have just about found your perfect job. What does this look like?

TECH TREND GUEST POST - By Santiago Marin
CLOUDY, WITH A CHANCE OF RAIN

The word "cloud" itself implies something intangible, ever changing and, in fact, dreamlike. Where cloud tech is concerned, the combination of the fact that it's relatively new, as least as product, and that it does entail relinquishing some control in some regards might be putting some business off.

At the end of the day, if you are running a serious business, you want to know what's going on with your sensitive data. The hybrid cloud, the most popular type, is a very good stab at adding some control to the cloud.

YES, YOU SHOULD BE OFFERING COMPANY PERKS TO YOUR EMPLOYEES

Company perks can be the metaphorical espresso shot in your employees' coffee. In the Ceridian 2013 Pulse of Talent survey, 47 percent of workers ranked job rewards (monetary or otherwise) as the most important driver of engagement at work. Companies recognize this, and 60 percent of those surveyed said they currently offer non-monetary rewards for jobs well-done. Perks, however, shouldn't be the sole reason employees stay with a company, nor should they be the only reason new talent comes on board. Perks should reflect company culture, not define it.

GETTING TO THE BEST COLLEGE TALENT FIRST

According to the 2013 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Current Population Survey, 25.5 percent of 1.3 million college graduates were looking for work. How does any company attract the best of that talent before it gets snapped up by the competition? Learn how some of the best talent recruiting efforts make a difference in the quality of people that connect with your business.

The Most Traditional Approach is Not as Effective

The typical way a company makes contact with new grads or students preparing to graduate is through college job fairs. People sit in booths waiting for students to show up and express interest. While most businesses with an employee recruiting program use this approach as their focus, it's not as effective on this generation of college students as branding.
