SHOULD YOU MOVE FOR A JOB?
Moving is a big undertaking for most folks. There are a lot of things hanging in the balance when you get an offer that requires relocation. The most important thing to consider is the job itself. Is this your dream job? If not, what is the driver? It should be pretty compelling, for example: The job is in your dream location; the opportunity to grow your career is clear; the team dynamic is perfect. Are you going to be successful if this is not your dream job? Regardless of other attractive elements; are you making a reasonable commitment? Ultimately, accepting a job and resigning shortly after can be a huge strike against you on a resume. The employer can feel like he or she wasted her time and resources and could potentially burn bridges with colleagues. continues...

HIGH TECH TRENDS
The PC is Dead, Long Live the PC
Tech-Sector Job Cuts Surged by 144% in the second quarter according to global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. The byline of the press release portends more job cuts caused by the diminishing sales of personal computers. Indeed, the technology sector layoffs reportedly more than doubled during the latest quarter. Computer job cuts jumped up to 16,404 in Q2. But despite this increase in tech-sector job cuts, overall the downsizing has slowed from a year ago.
But is it all gloom and doom? Q2 PC sales are down by 10.9% over the same period a year ago worldwide, and 1.4% in the U.S., according to Gartner, but mobile device sales are on a strong upward bound trajectory. Gartner estimates that traditional PC shipments will decline by 10.6% in 2013, while tablet shipments will increase by 67.9%. The market is being driven by sales of tablets, smartphones, and to a lesser extent, ultramobiles.

CLEANTECH TRENDS
Electric Vehicles, Job Creation and Recent Reports
In May of this year, sales of electric vehicles hit a milestone with 100,000 sold in the United States according to Autoweek. The month of June marked a new milestone, with one of the best months of sales hitting nearly 9,000 electric passenger vehicles. Tesla has been one of the best-selling luxury EV cars, and the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt have garnered sales and customer loyalty. Hybrids outnumber plug-ins by about 50,000. Prius was the original leader in the hybrid market but Toyota, Camry and Highlander and even Ford are growing in popularity each year.
And of course, electric industrial and commercial vehicles (think golf carts, forklifts, buses, boats, aircraft, motorcycles, etc.) push the number of electric vehicles even higher. Globally, IDTechEx forecasts that the total market for hybrid and pure electric vehicles will grow from 38.8 million vehicles (of all types) in 2013 to 116 million vehicles in 2023 - a $294 Billion market.

"BIG DATA" A TOOL FOR TALENT MANAGEMENT?
The most modest organization has large amounts of information, i.e., "Big Data", on its operations, suppliers, customers, and especially on its employees. Even knowing as little as length of service, hours worked, job function, performance data, and location can be telling as to which employees are likely to succeed or not. The basis for Big Data decision making is founded in that class that most students ignored or only took the one mandatory course. That course usually covered the statistical foundation concepts of data collection & presentation, variability, central tendency, sampling theory, inference & hypotheses testing, regression & correlation, indexes & time series, and seasonal & cyclical analysis. While an employer with a few dozen employees can manage them with no more of a sophisticated tool than a good memory or paper notebook, even a middle sized organization of a workforce of few hundred needs to look deeper.
