6 TIPS FOR BUILDING A
HIGH QUALITY MANAGEMENT TEAM
By Jon Piggins, Executive Recruiter, IT Sales & Marketing

When recruiting new management, or professionals who can be groomed to move into leadership positions, it is imperative to get the right combination of skills and qualities. When building a team, from the outset recruit new employees with the skills and abilities that will strengthen the department. And additionally look for these qualities in candidates in order to build a high quality management team:

1.    Big Picture Thinkers

Of course a candidate must be excellent at what he/she does, and must be a strong contributor to the team or department. Moreover they must fundamentally understand the business, the industry, the competition, and the economy at large. Those who can take your group to the next level must be strategic thinkers who have a grasp of the big picture.

DISCOVER THE BEST GRADUATE DEGREES FOR EMERGING CAREERS

by Sharon Wiatt Jones, careerthoughtleaders.com

Are you looking for a way to qualify for "hot jobs" in a poor economy?

Instead of aiming for a graduate or professional degree which personally interests you (folklore or film, anyone?) or impresses friends and family (M.D, MBA, J.D.), let's consider more objective criteria:

1.    New and emerging occupations
2.    Positive job market outlook
3.    Good return on investment
4.    Breadth and depth; interdisciplinary with focus
5.    Experiential (internship, co-op, or capstone component)

The Occupational Information Network (U.S. Department of Labor/Employment and Training Administration), has prepared a list of emerging occupations by industry. Some of the career fields generally requiring a master's degree are listed here:

New and Emerging Occupations include the "Green" Industry (Environmental Economist, Industrial Ecologist), Information Technology (User Experience Designer)...

TECH TRENDS
The Mobile Wave

In the recent book by technologist Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy The Mobile Wave: How Mobile Intelligence Will Change Everything, Saylor argues that coming indispensability of mobile technologies. This "the fifth wave of computer technology" will transform the possibilities of mobile computing on business, society, economies and everyday life.

Well, the fifth wave has already done this, and doubtlessly will continue to do so in ways we haven't even imagined yet. From growing business opportunities in third world countries where there is a lack of what we consider basic business infrastructure, to providing educational opportunities elearning that build skills for the next generation of jobs globally, to managing energy consumption in our homes, mobile technology has already brought us extraordinary change to our daily lives.

Solar Energy Fact Sheet Q3 2012 CLEAN TECH TRENDS
Solar - Great Strides in Affordability Made, Many Opportunities Ahead

Solar had a great third quarter in 2012, it was in fact the third largest on record for the U.S. Solar industry. The U.S. market installed 1,992 MW in the first three quarters, exceeding 2011's annual total of 1,885 MW. 2012's total is estimated to surpass 3,000 MW. The U.S. total is now over 6.400 MW, enough to power more than 1 million American households.

The growing affordability due to falling costs has spurred the expansion. Q3 2012's average cost of a completed PV system dropped by 33% since the beginning 2011. Solar panel prices decreased by 58% in that same time period according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.

A new report Why Are Residential PV Prices in Germany So Much Lower Than in the United States? A Scoping Analysis put out by the Environmental Energy Technologies Division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory examines the lower costs of solar in Germany as compared to the U.S.

RECRUITING, STAFFING & EMPLOYMENT NEWS
Contingent Recruiter Confidence Growing;
Jobs Report Good Not Great
Employees

Redfish made placements at the Director, Executive and Project Manager levels in January. The preponderance of the hiring was in the Cloud, Software-as-a-Service, Enterprise Systems & Network Management, Intelligence Software, and Solar Technology industries.

The biggest challenges to January hiring was candidates receiving multiple offers. "We expect to see this trend continue," states Logan Knight, IT Recruiter at Redfish. "The pool of talented candidates is drying up with all the current growth, leading to good engineers getting multiple offers."

Execunet reports that a recent survey found that recruiter expectations of job creation increased in at the end of 2012, recruiters indicated that they anticipate approximately one in five companies adding executive jobs in the next six months. Contingency search firm confidence reached 41 percent in December, its highest in eight months; retained recruiter confidence dropped to 31 percent, its lowest since the debt limit crisis in late summer of 2011.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report indicated that 157,000 were added in January, good but certainly not great. November and December were revised upwards by 156,000 collectively. Upward revision for the year shows an average of 181,000 jobs were created each month, and suggests that job growth has been more solid than previously thought.

The industries leading the growth this month were the service-providing sector (+130,000), retail trade (+33,000), professional & business services (+25,000), health care (+23,000), goods-producing jobs (+36,000) and construction (+28,000).
