Memberships are going fast.  Don't delay!

Dear USICD Members and Friends,

I recently returned from a week in Myanmar meeting with the disability community there.  This is such an exciting time as the cross-disability movement there organizes around a shared vision: the equal rights, dignity and celebration of people with disabilities.

Connecting with global colleagues isn't possible without you.

What does membership in USICD means to you?  First of all, you're in good company with all your fellow members.  Your community of fellow members shares the vision for the rights of persons with disabilities-at home, in Myanmar, and around the world.  That's a large community!  Also, I hope you'll agree that the monthly USICD newsletter is a valuable publication.

We offer a bargain membership fee of only $25 for individuals, $300 for organizations.  Simply GO HERE and renew on our secure site.  Would you consider an extra donation of $25 to give USICD a boost?

With thanks,

David Morrissey

Disability Coalition Building in Myanmar
USICD was thrilled to coordinate a series of trainings in May with the disability community there, featuring a visit from Hyung Shik Kim, an advocate from South Korea and member of the international Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.  In partnership with the Myanmar Council of Persons with Disabilities, USAID and World Learning, the trainings included visiting lecturer Janet Lord and USICD International Disability Law Advisor Allison deFranco.

USICD Welcomes 2015 Interns in Foreign Affairs

On May 24, interns arrived to Washington DC and are settling in at a George Washington University dormitory for an eight-week long internship at various international NGOs based in the DC area and the Department of State.  After arriving on Memorial Day weekend, they have participated in USICD's orientation program before starting at their host organizations.

Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation has generously funded USICD's Youth in International Development and Foreign Affairs internship program for the last three years, offering opportunities to youth with disabilities from across the United States who are interested in careers in the fields of international development or foreign affairs.

Meet this year's interns here.

USICD Board Member Consults
in Trinidad and Tobago
At the request of the U.S. Embassy, John Wodatch, USICD Board Member, traveled to Trinidad and Tobago during the last week in April, 2015. He met with disability rights groups, UN officials, business leaders, and government officials, including a meeting with Anthony Carmona, President of Trinidad and Tobago and First Lady Reema Carmona.

Mr. Wodatch discussed U.S. disability rights laws and encouraged ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the passage of a comprehensive law implementing the treaty and providing rights for persons with disabilities in the country. President Carmona, who has worked to provide opportunities for those with autism and with intellectual disabilities, called for the ratification of the CRPD and the Ministry of the Attorney General has begun work on both a ratification package and a specific disability rights law.
