CRPD and the 2014 Winter Paralympics

The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, which were record-breaking in terms of athletic performances, ticket sales and media coverage, came to an end on March 16 at Fisht Stadium in Russia with a spectacular Closing Ceremony.  Team USA ended the Games in third place in the medal standing with 18 overall medals, including two gold, seven silver and nine bronze.  See the full list below.

Ithe CRPD Support logo with We support instead of I support The Paralympic Winter Games also focused on the disability treaty, most noteworthy with a Paralympic Wall on which paralympians showed their support for the Paralympic Movement and personal commitment to the CRPD.  Footage showing the Paralympic Wall was included in a piece that PBS NewsHour did on the treaty, which you can view here.  You can also view our compilation of Paralympics coverage at www.usicd.org.

Do you have a disability and have had difficulty studying or traveling abroad? Did you go abroad for work or school and find challenges when you arrived? Were you unable to go because of your disability?

Your story could help our work towards ratifying the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities -- by putting a FACE to why it is important!  The CRPD is an international human rights treaty, modeled after the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and has been ratified by 143 countries.  With your help, we hope to make the U.S. #144!  If you have a story, please share it at http://bit.ly/shareCRPD.

Narrowing in on the YIDA Finalists

Nearly 110 students and recent graduates with disabilities have applied for consideration for a place in USICD's Youth in International Development and Affairs (YIDA) 2014 summer internship program. The program was launched last year with generous support from the Mitsubishi Electric American Fund (MEAF); MEAF funding has been continued through 2014.  The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation provided a new grant for 2014.  Staff and a team of review panelists have been carefully narrowing the field in order to select eight interns to join the program in Washington, D.C.

Short-listed candidates will be informed of a final decision in late March or early April.
