US International Council on Disabilities Looks Back on an Exceptional Year and Forward to 2014

The holidays are fast approaching, and with that comes December 31.  For us at USICD, it means our books close on New Year's Eve.  We've checked the budget and must raise

$21,500 before the ball falls in Times Square on the 31st.

I know that you value the work that USICD does for the disability community.  And, you know it takes money to continue to maintain our role of convener, advocate and voice of the disability community worldwide.

2013 was a major year for USICD as the backbone and driving force behind The Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD).

We convened more than 800 disability, human and civil rights, and religious organizations, plus more than 50 American corporations, and thousands of individuals before the United States Senate as a united voice of justice for people with disabilities.  We hope for success for CRPD!

The US is a leader in our community thanks to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); together, we can work to bring those rights, accommodations and principles of inclusion to our global friends.

The new Youth in International Development and Affairs (YIDA) internship program got off to a great start this year.  Students and recent graduates with disabilities who are interested in international affairs and development careers were hosted by USICD in the Washington DC area.  They enjoyed challenging internship placements in organizations such as Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Handicap International.  Youth in International Development and Affairs engages USICD's goal of incorporating a disability perspective in all foreign affairs issues through strategic leadership.

Please make a year-end, tax-deductible donation in support of the work we do for you.  In fact, consider a monthly donation.  And, the power of your donation supports USICD throughout the year.

So, think about $5, $10 or even $25 a month.  Or, if you'd rather, please make a one-time donation of $50, $100, $250 or whatever you can afford in support of the work we do on your behalf.

It's easy to donate, just hit the button here DONATE NOW.

Thanks in advance for your support and best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and for 2014.

We'll be here for you!

David Morrissey

Your donation to US International Council on Disabilities is fully tax-deductible to the extent by the law.

Second CRPD Hearing Draws Big Crowd
Ithe CRPD Support logo with We support instead of I support
On Thursday, November 21, the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee held the second of two hearings on the Disability Treaty, and our community turned out in great numbers again!  Advocates representing the broad and diverse coalition in favor of the treaty were present at the hearing to show their support.

A highlight of the event was the delivery to the committee of a petition with over 67,000 signatures from across the country calling for ratification. This number continues to grow, add your name at www.disabilitytreaty.org.

Marca Bristo, President of USICD, was energized by the turnout at the second hearing and encouraged by the substantive discussion of the treaty. Ms. Bristo remarked, "I'm thrilled and gratified that we have had such a robust turnout for this hearing. Those present today represented the strength, diversity, and commitment of our community. Our coalition reflects America and the millions of Americans with disabilities, professionals, veterans, and religious and civil rights organizations who both need and want the Disability Treaty to be ratified.  I would like to thank Secretary Kerry and Chairman Menendez for their continued leadership and support on this crucial treaty."

All of those present voiced the hope felt by many in the disability, civil rights, veteran, business, and faith communities that the U.S. Senate would take this rare second chance to do the right thing and vote to ratify the treaty. Witnesses speaking on behalf of the treaty included Secretary of State John Kerry, Frances W. West, Worldwide Director of IBM's Human Ability and Accessibility Center, and C. Boyden Gray, attorney and former U.S. Ambassador to the European Union.

USICD is inspired by the hard work all advocates have done in 2013, and is hopeful for a mark-up in early 2014. We will be back in touch with updates as soon as we have them.  In the meantime, please keep sending friends and family to www.disabilitytreaty.org and using Twitter to keep the momentum! #ISupportCRPD

Internships will be at various international organizations in the DC area. It is anticipated that the program will run from May 26 to July 26, 2014. These dates may be subject to change.
