CRPD Education and Advocacy Update

June has proved to be a very busy month for education and awareness around the disability treaty! USICD along with the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and the American Association of People with Disabilities held a convening of leaders of the faith community that stand in solidarity behind treaty ratification and A group of people with obviously different religious costumes sit at a conference table. acknowledge its impact the disability community around the world. The convening brought together a range of voices from the Sikh community to the Catholic community who share in the values of supporting the respect and dignity of all people with disabilities.

Three little people, one in a wheelchair and one on crutches, smile at the camera while a man and a woman stoop down in the back row to get in the picture. Also this month USICD's Esmé Grant and Suzanne Richard had the pleasure of educating folks about the treaty at the Little People of America conference in Washington, DC. A guest speaker from Uganda at the conference shared how little people in her country are often devalued and murdered.  Esmé and Susie, a little person herself, shared how the treaty is a guiding light to countries without protections for their citizens with disabilities. LPA members were one of the over 600 dedicated organizations that lent their voice to CRPD ratification last year and have continued to lead on treaty awareness this year with President Gary Arnold leading the way.

USICD's Suzanne Richard and super intern Steven Rodriguez offered a presentation on the treaty to the annual Human Rights on the Hill event at the University of the District of Columbia College of Law. Attendees learned about the disability treaty and its relationship to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008.

USICD staff was also pleased to be part of the crowd in June applauding Senator McCain who was honored for his leadership of the CRPD by VetsFirst, a program of United Spinal Association.

Have you noticed the treaty in the news lately? We have! Disability leaders from around the country are weighing in:

The sixth session of the Conference of States Parties is right around the corner! Due to the high level meeting on disability this September, the COSP is set for July 17-19. USICD staff looks forward to reporting back the latest on the conference events!

Last month, Youth in Development (YiD) and AAPD interns met with Rosangela Berman-Bieler from UNICEF, along with representatives of UNICEF USA, and engaged in a learning dialogue around the issue of children and youth with disabilities around the world.  You can also read UNICEF's call for U.S. ratification of the CRPD here.

Postponed because of a storm, but still to come, this year's cohorts will meet with Judy Heumann of the State Department and Charlotte McClain-Nhlapo of USAID to discuss the role of accessibility in U.S. Foreign Affairs and Assistance.
A Former USICD Fellow Continues Great Work in Nepal and A Former Intern is Published
A gentleman of Nepalese decent stands at a podium speaking with one hand gesturing to the side Padam Pariyar was a Community Solutions Program Fellow thru IREX at USICD from August to Decemeber 2012.  He writes:

After completion of my 4 months long fellowship in US International Council on Disabilities (USICDI) in 2012, I joined International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) Nepal in the capacity of Disability Project Coordinator this March. IFES Nepal with grant support from USICD is implementing the project "Developing Leadership and Increasing Electoral Participation of the Persons with Disabilities in Nepal" in partnership with National Federation of the Disabled Nepal. The 2 years long project aims to develop leadership and advocacy skills of DPOs, create awareness in community and increase participation of persons with disabilities and their associations in electoral process. The project has already prepared the list of project guiding documents through support mission from IFES, DC for the effective and timely start up of the project. Besides this, I have been supporting the project partners to prepare their project implementation plan, selection of project staffs and working site and Training of Trainers for the project staffs. My working experience and guidance received from entire USICD colleagues particularly from David to design and finalize my Follow on Project was very helpful to take up my role in this project. I thank USICD for giving me such wonderful learning opportunities for my professional development. I believe the project actions will be successful to promote the political rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities and DPOs in electoral process in the upcoming Constituent Assembly election and in the future.

Julia Wolhandler interned with USICD in 2012 as a part of Gallaudet's International Development Program and is currently working with the International Disability and Development Consortium in Brussels.  We are proud to announce that she recently authored the section The Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the larger CIVICUS report "State of Civil Society 2013".
