Spreading the love
Mama Dip's continues to be a steward to the Triangle, and to the B100 Community
Situated just one block back from bustling Franklin Street, Mama Dip's has been serving down-home southern cooking to the Chapel Hill area for nearly forty years. When you walk into Mildred Council's restaurant, you can clearly see her impact on the community. Photos of teams are on the walls, and your eye catches signed portraits of Paula Dean, and copies of both of her cookbooks.
Not only does the Mama Dip family run comfortable but classy restaurant with absolutely amazing food (biscuits, greens, pies, fried chicken, cobblers...) they also get it. By partnering with Piedmont they have helped keep cars like ours running on clean, war-free fuel. And for that, we are very grateful.
Mama Dip is a bit of a celebrity. A chef and an author. Something tells me that in maybe more than one kitchen, there is a signed picture of her on the wall.

New faces and new spaces on Lorax Lane
2013 is already proving to be a year of big changes for the folks here on Lorax Lane. Companies are moving, organizations are expanding, and with that growth comes opportunity. Two weeks ago, Lyle and Tami hosted a charette with te nants and stakeholders of the community joining in on a conversation about our common goals and, as Tim Toben put it, the "sacred third." The charette was a learning experience about, among other things, where we see ourselves by the time Charette 3.0 rolls around.
Although we are sad to see companies like Eastern Carolina Organics move on, we are excited to welcome in a year that promises to bring new ideas, prospects, and people who 'get it' to the Eco-industrial Park. Jeff Gannon of Green Door Design/Build will be opening a locally-sourced red block company called Dig. Gabe DePaz, a previous employee of Piedmont will be starting micro-greens project. We have warmly welcomed an on-site massage therapist, David Hamilton, who will be working out of the "Office of the Future". And yes, the rumors are true...there will be brandy.
If you haven't been here in a while, it may be worth coming to a tour to see the new changes...or just get a massage

Meet our newest Intern
My name is Thacher Inglefield, I am an undergrad at UNC Chapel Hill. I am originally from Hickory, North Carolina. This seme ster I am in The Institute for the Environment's Sustainable Triangle Field Site at The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The field site provides the other students and I an opportunity to gain valuable experience and education in the environmental field of sustainability.
Students that are fully enrolled in the field site take the core courses for a minor in sustainability, which are: Principles of Sustainability taught by Elizabeth Shay Ph.D, Reimagining the American Landscape taught by Dr. Greg Gangi, and Community Design and Green Architecture taught by Anthony Sease, an architect and civil engineer. Along with the core courses the students also take part in an internship and a capstone research project.
The capstone project for this semester is a feasibility study for a Resource Recovery Eco-Industrial Park at and near Durham's waste transfer station to save resources and create jobs. This capstone project was motivated by a recent RFP seeking a more cost-effective e-waste program and "innovative diversion solutions" for other waste categories at the Durham waste transfer station. Since Chapel Hill has closed their landfill as well, more waste will be sent to the waste transfer system. It is a tough challenge to change the community's trash into treasure, however, if proven feasible there will be great savings and benefits.
This semester I am very fortunate to be interning at Piedmont Biofuels since it is an active and successful eco-industrial park in the area. I hope to gain valuable insight on how eco-industrial parks form and function, as well as to get my hands dirty and learn about the biofuel industry.
