Hello Friends, GRRers & Fellow Greyhound Lovers:
The picnic is only two weeks away, on June 15th, and we're in full swing with planning. Closing date for reservations is June 6th. The park only allows us a limited amount of people so don't miss out on this fun event. Get your reservations in now and don't forget to bring your check books! See Picnic News below for all of the details.
We really need some muscle to help us get set up on the day of the picnic. If you can lend a hand moving tables and chairs, putting up tents, etc., please contact me at Christine@GreyhoundRescueRehab.org. We will need you there at 8 a.m.
I'm looking forward to seeing you all!
For the hounds,
Christine Johnson

Picnic News
The GRR picnic is going to be really special this year. The silent auction and raffle prizes are going to be fantastic: horseback riding lessons, tennis lessons, jewelry, vacation time and more and more. SO exciting!! If you're looking for a bargain, don't miss the GUGG tent. All kinds of greyhound related items, both for humans and hounds, will be available at GREYTLY reduced prices. The 50/50 raffle winner will be drawn at the picnic. The pot is getting bigger and BIGGER every day. All the proceeds of the picnic fund raisers benefit GRR's medical fund which provides support for hounds that are sick or injured during their racing career. GRR hounds need your support. Some wonderful vendors and services will be on hand so plan to shop until you drop and if your hound gets tired or achy, Sheri Pozella will be offering mini massages and Anne Quick will be doing Reiki. And don't forget that Dr. Emily Subach will be on hand to discuss the value of acupuncture for your hounds and surgeon Joe Palamara will be ready to answer questions or check out aches and pains. Nail clipping will be available at $10 per hound. Long nails on greyhounds are painful and potentially bone damaging so be sure to take advantage of this GREYT price to get your hound a pedicure. Fun and games is what this event is all about!
Also there will be adoptable hounds at the picnic. Look for the dogs wearing the bright green collars. If you're thinking of adopting, this would be a great time to meet your new best friend.

Butterfly Release Fundraiser
Request from Rainbow Bridge
Weep not for me, though I am gone
Into that gentle night.
Grieve if you will, but not for long
Upon my soul's sweet flight.
I am at peace; my soul's at rest;
There is no need for tears.
For with your love I was so blessed
For all those many years.
There is no pain, I suffer not;
The fear now all is gone.
Put now these things out of your thoughts;
In your memory I live on.
Remember not my fight for breath
Remember not the strife.
Please do not dwell upon my death,
But celebrate my life.
~ Author Unknown
Dear GRR friends,
This has been a year of sadness and loss for GRR with so many of our beloved hounds leaving for the Bridge. We would like to honor their memories and celebrate their lives with a Butterfly Release to take place at the picnic. The cost will be $5 for each hound being remembered with a maximum charge of $20. So if you have more than four hounds to be remembered, the amount paid will still be $20. Please send your check made out to GRR along with the names of your hounds to my home address at 27 Spring Garden Ave., Waterbury, CT 06708. Each precious dog's name will be read aloud before the butterflies are released.
In addition, we will hold a special raffle for a double sided fleece blanket with a butterfly pattern. I know that our beloved companions would want us to remember them with joy and to continue to help their fellow greyhounds still waiting to find that perfect someone to love them.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the picnic.
Ruth Tuccio

Featured Hound for Adoption 1
Patty by Annette Diskin
Sex: Female Color: White Age: 2 years Cats: Yes
Patty is turning out to be a treasure. The good "stuff": She is affectionate, playful and full of energy. She is no longer starving and turning over bags of food. Being she has been unable to arouse the resident greys to play, she has "settled" for me. She loves to catch the stuffies and throw them around. The less endearing "stuff": She still jumps up on me when I let her out of the crate; I've cut this down some by having a treat in my hand, but she'll still come in back of me and jump up. She does not like to go outside. I can now get her at least up to the end of the driveway. Forget treats when she's outside, tail is between her legs and she doesn't even want the special treats, i.e., cheese, franks, chicken. She was frightened by the sound of a train coming down the track and as if that weren't enough the train whistle blew, unfortunately, on our first walk. Oh, yes, she's VERY vocal. My neighbors were quite surprised since Natasha and Star rarely open their mouths. Patty is well loved, I'm glad to have had the opportunity to know her. Kind of sounds like a job recommendation.

Featured Hound for Adoption 2
Trixie by Annabel Saunders
Sex: Female Color: Brindle Age: 3 years Cats: No
Trixie is extremely outgoing and loves people. She is not scared of anything and takes to new activities with gusto. She would be a great companion for an active family with teenagers as she is energetic and loves to go places and do stuff. She needs exercise and interesting surroundings. She is an excellent running companion and likes going in the car.
She loves snuggling with people and having her belly and whole body rubbed while she waggles her legs in the air. She would do well in agility or with other training, including visiting hospitals to be petted. 'Happy' would a perfect name for her!
Trixie is not suited to live with animals smaller than she is (because she has high prey drive), or with small children or fragile people (just because she is sometimes so enthusiastic).
She could be an only dog or would be perfect for encouraging a shy dog to be more confident.

That was the tag line for our first ever cross-promotion with Epstein's Deli at the Choice Pet Supply Hartsdale Meet and Greet on May 4th.
Deli owners Marion and Dale were so impressed by our hounds and GRR's efforts, they felt compelled to create an ongoing donation stream; proceeds from hot dog sales are going into our medical fund at every Meet and Greet this year!

Home Made Mosquito Trap Recipe by Bobbi Nelson
Items needed: 1 cup of water 1/4 cup of brown sugar 1 gram of yeast 1 2-liter bottle Directions: 1. Cut the plastic bottle in half. 2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle. 3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes. 4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired. 5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.)
Change the solution every two weeks for continuous control. |
