Hello Friends, GRRers & Fellow Greyhound Lovers:

The beautiful spring weather has finally arrived. A quick reminder to watch carefully that hounds don't slip out open doors and that screen doors are marked with decorative magnets so hounds don't run right into, or through, them. This is just one of many websites where you can find magnets http://windowfilmworld.com/screen-art-screen-magnets.htm.

We have two really special "golden oldie hounds" who have waited a long time to find their forever home. Barbie and Jill are still in foster care waiting patiently for someone to call them their own. These girls have worked so hard at BOTH their prior careers. Isn't there someone in GRR land who's willing to love a senior? They're so easy going and have lots of love left to give.

We have a new group of hounds coming in from WV this weekend. We could use a couple of hands for intake on Saturday in Stamford around 5 p.m. and are also short two foster homes. If you're available to help out, send me an email at Christine@greyhoundrescuerehab.org.

The picnic reservation flyers will be going in the mail in the next week so keep an eye out. We're going to have great games, food, vendors, surgeon, Dr. Joe Palamara and certified veterinary specialist in acupuncture, Dr. Emily Subach, both from Katonah Bedford Veterinary Center who will both be on hand to answer medical questions. So mark your calendars for June 15th.

For the hounds,

Christine Johnson

Greyhound Moms

In honor of Mother's Day, we're highlighting the brood moms currently up for adoption:

Jill

Barbie

These ladies worked hard as racers and then as moms and they are both terrific. They deserve the best retirement. Won't you consider giving a brood mom her forever home for Mother's Day?

Featured Hound for Adoption 1

 Jill

Jill by Lea Baxter

Sex: Female
Color: Black
Age: 10 years
Cats: No

Jill is a very sweet girl; she is friendly to everyone who visits and will stand next to you for as long as you feel like petting her. She rides nicely in a car, is very good on a leash and enjoys frolicking in our fenced-in yard.   She doesn't mind her crate or our resident greyhound, Dazziq, and loves to toss toys in the air and catch them. Jill is an easy-going, low maintenance companion that anyone would love having as part of their family.

Jill is an Irish lass. She ran five races at the Cork track in Ireland before she made her way to the U.S. She started having puppies at the age of three and to date has 32 that are registered racers. We think she had a litter recently so there may be more. This girl deserves an excellent home with lots of lovin' where she can spend her golden years.

Featured Hound for Adoption 2 Barbie

Barbie by Arlene O'Rourke

Sex: Female
Color: Fawn
Age: 9 years
Cats: Yes

Barbie is a real doll...she is a well mannered nine year old who retired from racing to become a brood mamma.  After several litters of racing pups, Barbie remained on the farm until she came to GRR.  Currently, Barbie is in GRR foster care and enjoying her new life on a soft and cushy dog bed.  She was reunited with one of her pups, Frankie who was in foster care at the same home but has now found his forever home. Barbie likes to be around family members and is great with people.  She is always happy to greet anyone who comes into the room.   Her tail never stops wagging.  Barbie is adventurous but cautious because everything is new to her.  She learned to navigate the stairs quickly and is great on the leash.  If you have some room in your heart and in your home, please consider Barbie.

The GRR picnic is fast approaching and donations are greatly needed for the silent auction and raffle.  Anything goes, it doesn't have to be greyhound related, new items such as clothing or jewelry, art work, services such as pet sitting or dog walking, vacation getaways etc.  BUT keep in mind when making your donations, would you want to bid on these items?  The medical fund has been depleted and there are a lot more greys that will be needing homes that could benefit from our fund.  Please Help! GUGG

The GRR picnic is just around the corner which means we need GUGG items.  What is GUGG?  It's Gently Used Greyhound Goods and we need donations to sell at the picnic.  Sales benefit our medical fund.  I'm looking for volunteers for drop-off points in Connecticut, Dutchess/Putnam Counties, Upper Westchester and Lower Westchester to collect GUGG items and will also need a couple of volunteers to help with the GUGG table the day of the picnic.  Please email me at newyearsbaby67@yahoo.com or call me on my cell at 914-907-6759 if you can volunteer.  Please type GUGG in the subject line if e-mailing.

Thank you,

Butterfly Release Fundraiser

Request from Rainbow Bridge

Weep not for me, though I am gone

Into that gentle night.

Grieve if you will, but not for long

Upon my soul's sweet flight.

I am at peace; my soul's at rest;

There is no need for tears.

For with your love I was so blessed

For all those many years.

There is no pain, I suffer not;

The fear now all is gone.

Put now these things out of your thoughts;

In your memory I live on.

Remember not my fight for breath

Remember not the strife.

Please do not dwell upon my death,

But celebrate my life.

Dear GRR friends,

This has been a year of sadness and loss for GRR with so many of our beloved hounds leaving for the Bridge.  We would like to honor their memories and celebrate their lives with a Butterfly Release to take place at the picnic.  The cost will be $5 for each hound being remembered with a maximum charge of $20.  So if you have more than four hounds to be remembered, the amount paid will still be $20.  Please send your check made out to GRR along with the names of your hounds to my home address at 27 Spring Garden Ave., Waterbury, CT 06708.  Each precious dog's name will be read aloud before the butterflies are released.  Butterfly Blanket

In addition, we will hold a special raffle for a double sided fleece blanket with a butterfly pattern.  I know that our beloved companions would want us to remember them with joy and to continue to help their fellow greyhounds still waiting to find that perfect someone to love them.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the picnic.

Tour of Life Southbury by Bobbi Nelson

On Saturday, April 13th, GRR volunteers joined the North Shore Animal League for their annual Tour of Life in Southbury, CT. This is the largest mobile adoption event ever undertaken.  We had a full complement of greyhounds and their people in attendance. This event brought many people looking to adopt the kittens, cats and "muttigrees" that North Shore brought in their huge vans. Men, women and their kids were lined up to get into the vans to check out the wonderful group of animals ready for their forever homes. Volunteers were parading dogs all over the parking lot!! There were so many to pet!! Our greyhounds made their rounds through the people as well and loved the attention they were getting! We had a few people interested in the hounds and hope to get a few adoptions from the day's efforts.

Baby skunksDe-Skunking Your Dog

We all hope our dogs never run into a skunk, but in case they do, take the following steps and use this recipe for de-skunking:

Step 1: If your dog has been skunked, keep him or her outside. If you bring the dog inside, your house may smell like skunk for weeks.

Step 2: Mix the following solution:

1 gallon of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide

1 cup of baking soda

4 teaspoons of dishwashing liquid (not dishwashing detergent)

Diluted vinegar (vinegar mixed with water) may be used if you don't have the above ingredients.

Step 3: Clean and rinse

Apply to your dog as soon as possible after he or she has been skunked to dry fur. Do not get the solution in the dog's eyes. If you do, rinse the eyes with cold water immediately. If the dog's eyes are irritated from being skunked, rinse with cold water only.  Rinse the dog immediately and thoroughly.  Repeat if necessary.

Step 4: Shampoo

Shampoo your dog with a regular dog shampoo. He or she should now be de-skunked.

Note: This solution should not be saved or stored in a closed container as the contents may explode.  Discard as soon as possible.
