Are Your Charges Too High?  A Case Study
Leslie Gold

As hospital billing practices come under increasing scrutiny due to both the release of CMS data and the rising out of pocket cots for patients, it is important to know where you stand.  Recently a hospital CEO called me and noted that although they had just completed a comprehensive overhaul of their Charge Master, patients were complaining that their wound care charges were considerably higher than their competitors.  "Was this true?," he wanted to know.

Because PDS collects detailed claims data, we have more than just payments. We have LOS, diagnoses, procedures, charges, and more. There is no possible way we could provide standard reports that answer every question a hospital could answer with our data, so we also offer custom reporting.

With the help of a PDS custom report, this CEO confirmed his hypothesis that the patients were right. While fees for services in other departments were in line with regional averages, the wound care charges for the high volume services at this facility were roughly double what nearby hospitals were charging. The charges in this one department needed to be lowered.

3 Steps to Making Good Decisions FasterJim Barber
Are "slow and precise" deliberations a thing of the past?  Will "fast and roughly right" decisions be the wave of the future?  And if this is so, how can you tell between "roughly right" and "not right at all" decisions?  Nick Tasler  outlines a simple 3 step process to help leaders think quickly on their feet in this article in the Harvard Business Review.  His Know-Think-Do framework gives leaders a tool to move quickly in their decision process, but also have the checks in place to prevent bad decisions.  In our rapidly changing market, the "slow and precise" process is often outdated before it is even completed.  The "fast and roughly right" process can help keep you moving forward and on pace with the market.

In continued partnership,
