Challenges of Healthcare Reform Demonstrate Increased Need for PDS
Sandra Reilly

Sandra Reilly has two words for any hospitals considering whether or not they need PDS' web-based market intelligence and revenue benchmarking tool - healthcare reform.

"Contracting is going to be more difficult with health care reform; we're going to have more challenges, particularly with the state health insurance exchange," said Reilly, Director, Managed Care, at

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, a 453-bed not-for-profit hospital in Pomona, Calif. "At this hospital, like most hospitals, our commercial contracts are crucial to our bottom line. Everyone is worried about the exchange products eroding their commercial business."

She added, "Having the ability to accurately determine the bottom line in our contracts - and being able to communicate that clearly to our hospital leadership - is going to be more and more important as funding erodes in 2014 as a result of health care reform. PDS gives me the detailed information I need to go to my CEO and CFO and show them how we benchmark against our peer group in specific areas with a particular payer. It helps us quickly identify any potential problem areas in our contracts."

Pomona Valley was an early adopter of the PDS tool, which was launched in 2006.

One of the most helpful products offered by PDS, according to Reilly, is a brief titled "Using PDS to Prepare for Contract Negotiations."  "Our contract manager has made this her bible," she said. "We use it with each of our renewals - and to educate our hospital leadership." Read more

How Innovative is Your Hospital's Culture? Jim Barber
With the fast paced changes in healthcare, CEOs know that they need their organizations to be much innovative than in the past.  But how?

After studying innovation among 759 companies based in 17 major markets, researchers Tellis, Prabhu and Chandy found that corporate culture was a much more important driver of radical innovation than labor, capital, government or national culture.  But for executives, that conclusion raises two more questions: First, what is an innovative corporate culture? And second, if you don't have an innovative culture, is there any way you can build one?  This article by Jay Rao and Weintraub in MIT Sloan Management Review, addresses both questions by offering a simple model of the key elements of an innovative culture, as well as a practical assessment tool that managers can use to assess how conducive their organization's culture is to innovation - and to see specific areas where their culture might be more encouraging to it.

Data-sharing collaborative brings provider culture change and success

Premier healthcare alliance officials announced that their data-sharing collaborative saved 92,000 lives and $9.1 billion since 2008.  While the announcement emphasis was on the data, Susan DeVore, Premier president and CEO, explained that one of major drivers behind the collaborative's success was the culture change that took place among the healthcare providers.  The organizational change was the type of shift that any business must achieve to be high performing, she said.  PDS can help your organization make the cultural shift towards a data driven culture.
