Hospital and Health System Strategy in 2012: 6 Key Initiatives

To meet goals of improved quality and reduced costs in today's changing healthcare environment, hospitals are being forced to be creative and flexible in their strategies. As part of the transformation to value-based care, many hospitals are beginning to focus strategies on population health management, one of the core goals of healthcare reform. Managing population health will require close relationships with physicians, partnerships with organizations in the community and expansion into preventative and outpatient care.

You can read these six key strategies, from forming relations with physicians to pursuing payer relationships and new revenue models, that  forward-thinking hospitals and health systems are using to achieve population health management and other quality and cost goals, in this article in Beckers Hospital Review  Read the article

Your Strategy Needs a Strategy
Jim Barber

The oil industry holds relatively few surprises for strategists.  Things change, of course, sometimes dramatically, but in relatively predictable ways.  On the other hand, the internet software industry would be a nightmare for an oil industry strategist.  Innovations and new companies pop up frequently, seemingly out of nowhere, and the pace at which companies can build-or lose-volume and market share is head-spinning.   And then there are hospital strategists.  With their unique competitive environment they should be planning, developing, and deploying their strategies in markedly different ways from other industries.  But researchers at Harvard have found that this is often not the case.   In short, they find that there is a need for a systematic strategy for making strategy.

In this Harvard Business Review article, authors Reeves, Love and Tillmanns, present a simple framework that divides strategy planning into four styles according to how predictable your environment is and how much power you have to change it. Using this framework, corporate leaders can match their strategic style to the particular conditions of their industry, business function, or geographic market.   Read the article

Small rural hospitals are finding that using the legal vehicle of a Joint Powers Authority (JPA), allows them to collaborate with each other and thus compete against large health systems.  JPAs are widely used among public entities in California to create new lines of business, such as medical malpractice liability insurance cooperatives, workers compensation products and even as a vehicle to sell municipal bonds to finance new equipment and construction.

In a JPA, a separate board of directors is established to govern the new entity, which then has powers to combine the resources of participating organizations.   Read more in this Hospital Impact article.
