Meeting Summary
|
January 2013 Dinner Presentation, ASHRAE Toronto Chapter
The January 2013 dinner meeting featured a presentation about the building automation communications protocol BACnet (Building Automation and Control networks). BACnet allows the various devices and systems for HVAC, security, fire, and lighting in a building to communicate with each other. The presenter was Carl Neilson, M.Sc. BACnet Committee Chair. Mr. Neilson traced the history of BACnet from 1995, when it became ASHRAE/ANSI Standard 135, to the present. Following are some of the BACnet committee's most recent improvements to BACnet:
Lighting
The 2012 addition of protocols for communication to lighting devices and systems is one of the most recent changes.
CSML
CSML was added to the BACnet standard to provide a method for documenting control system data in XML. It is protocol agnostic; it can be used to describe data regardless of the underlying protocol, whether it is BACnet, LongMark, Konnex, etc. Since the adoption of CSML, the BACnet committee has been working on other extensions to the standard which leverage CSML, including improved BACnet / Web Services, Application Interfaces, and standardized methods for device and system descriptions.
Application InterfacesThe goal of Application Interfaces is to provide standardized representation of complex devices and systems. For example, the BACnet committee has developed a Variable Frequency Drive Application Interface which describes the data normally associated with a VFD and the BACnet objects that will be used to represent them. Application Interfaces will be discoverable allowing other BACnet devices to detect and understand what a device is doing. This should reduce help specification, engineering and commissioning costs by providing standardized application templates that devices will implement.
BACnet / IT
The BACnet Committee has been working for a couple of years now towards the goal of embracing standard IT technologies within BACnet, while ensuring backwards compatibility with existing systems. One goal of this work is to reduce the friction between Building Controls and IT departments by embracing technologies that IT experts are already familiar with.
Smart Grid
ASHRAE SPC 201P is developing a Facility Smart Grid Information Model. The BACnet Committee is currently analyzing the model to determine the best method of implementing it within a BACnet system. This work should result in a specification of a standardized building / utility interface gateway to lower the effort required to communicate a building's energy needs back to the grid and to provide a standard interface for demand response and real-time price signals. Carl Neilson and the BACnet Committee have been working on several fronts to improve the communication between a building's various devices and systems; as well as communication with the power grid and with the web. Complex BACnet devices and systems will be able to detect and understand what other complex devices and systems are doing. BACnet will be using standard IT technologies, so that it is more intuitive to IT personnel. A building's energy needs will be communicated back to the grid and real time price information will be used. The result will be more unified operation of the building's devices and systems and more efficient use of energy.

BEING STUDENT ACTIVITIES CHAIR
Everyone has a story. And everyone in ASHRAE has a story, I thought today I would share mine:In college I had been very active in my program and with extra-curricular activities. I was captain of our intramural soccer team, I was student representative of our program and I was always the first to ask questions in class. Before joining ASHRAE, I was the Director of Applied Technology in the student federation. At the time I had hoped to continue my work in the student federation - but life had bigger and better plans! I was approached by my professor (my student branch Faculty advisor) and the previous student branch president, about getting involved in ASHRAE. They asked if I was interested in fulfilling the role of student branch president. This was a game changing moment - had I said no at the time I would not be here today...but like most stories and adventures in ASHRAE it all starts with saying: "Yes". I knew I would have to put in few hours and a bit of work. In hindsight, I should have known that it was going to be a many hours and a lot work. But good things come from hard work, sweat and tears! That year, on top of managing and continuing the work of the student branch, I was fortunate enough to be sponsored to attend the 2012 Chicago Winter Conference. It was an amazing experience. I was part of the student congress, where I met student presidents from other branches in North America who were going through the same challenges and experiences I was. I sat in on technical seminars and learned about the latest in technologies. There were so many opportunities to get involved in ASHRAE, and so I did. My journey as student activities chair for the Toronto Chapter has been a very positive learning experience. I have learned so much and have had so many opportunities to develop myself since joining ASHRAE. I have felt the support and encouragement from the Chapter members on all the projects I have worked on and at the board meetings I attend. When I speak at the board meetings, I feel listened to and respected; as a new member coming to the plate - that feels good. For me, ASHRAE, is more than a bunch of standards it is a: group of people who have come together to volunteer their time to a great cause; a team that works in fellowship and a constant push for innovation for a better future. It is the people I have met, (and have had the great fortune to work with) that inspire me to work hard and do the best I can! It makes me want to give back to the Chapter and ultimately society at large. ASHRAE wants to help you grow as a person and as a leader! They do this through action, by supporting students in so many ways, such as sponsoring: the winter conferences, the design competitions, the scholarships, the project grants and the reduced membership fees, to mention a few. I want to a part of an organization that shares in my success and grows with me; and I want to find as many students as I can to share that experience with me! I plan on teaching all the students I meet, the one magical word, "Yes". It continues to amaze me how many doors that 3 letter word can open. And this is just the beginning. I am excited to continue my work in ASHRAE and to see where this journey will take me. Remember to say "Yes" and buckle up your seatbelt... Michael McEvenueStudent Activities Chair

Membership Promotion

As we pass the halfway mark for the year we would like to remind you of all the benefits that the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter has to offer and we encourage you to take advantage of your membership.
Each month our dinner meetings offer a chance for our members to meet one another in a social atmosphere where they are able to network and catch up with what is going on in the industry. The dinner meetings are also the place where members are able to get up to date information as to what is happening with the chapter and to find out about upcoming events. Most of these meetings include a tour of a facility in relation to the evening's technical presentation. The technical presentations are a very important part of the evening as they provide up to date information on a variety of topics in relation to what is happening in the HVAC industry. If you ever miss any of the dinner meetings don't worry, the Gazette allows you to catch up on anything that you missed and also provides you with upcoming events.
For our younger members both students and those that have recently graduated, there are many social events throughout the year in addition to the dinner meetings. These events allow you to meet others that are at the same stages of their careers as well as the active Toronto Chapter Members. There is typical a mix of social and technical events.
Every year for the past few years the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter has sponsored a trip for students to attend the ASHRAE Winter Conference. This allows them the opportunity to see what happens at a ASHRAE Conference and gives them a chance to get involved at an early stage of their careers.
The chapter also continues its support to YEA members and sends a few members to the YEA Leadership Weekend each year. At the leadership weekend, YEA members learn professional leadership skills and are offered the chance to meet with other YEA members from around the world.
Launching this month is the ASHRAE Mentorship Program. This program gives newer members the opportunity to be partnered with experienced members. Their newly formed partnership allows for the sharing information between the two members. The program has been developed to help newer members find their place in ASHRAE and also the help them with any questions they may have about the HVAC industry. It gives the experienced members the opportunity to stay in touch with new additions to the ASHRAE community and a chance to help someone who is just beginning their career in our industry.
Another great program for those that were ASHRAE student members, but have recently graduated is the "Smart Start" program. This program helps students make the transition from the ASHREA student membership to regular membership. The first year out of school you only pay $20 for an annual membership and for years two and three you only pay $50 per year for an annual membership!
For those of us that have been involved with ASHRAE for sometime now, we know how valuable our ASHRAE memberships are. Through ASHRAE we have made a lot of friends, networked with many colleagues, some of us have gained employment, have seen tremendous growth to both our careers and post secondary educations.
As great as an ASHRAE membership is we tend to forget how much is offered through our membership, so here are a few more points. With your membership you get the following benefits:
* The ASHRAE Handbook - the indispensable, industry-wide resource for all HVAC&R professionals * ASHRAE Journal - this monthly resource is the most trusted technical magazine in the HVAC&R community * High Performing Buildings - the quarterly magazine for innovation in building technology design and operation (electronic version only) * ASHRAE Insights - the monthly newsletter of key Society news and activities * HVAC Industry News - a weekly news resource keeping ASHRAE members abreast of the latest industry news and information * Access to more than 300 of the industry's leading technical publications * Access to online education, satellite broadcasts and professional education classes * Online training * Professional certification * Critical industry research * Tremendous networking opportunities through chapters and committees * Career Services / ASHRAE Toronto Chapter Career Fair
Enjoy your membership! If you have any questions in regards to membership please contact myself or Marc Bertolin.

In our January's Chapter meeting, with the assistance of one of our motivated Chapter RP committee members, Kevin Belusa, we ran the RP Fund Raising 50/50 draw for the night. Mr. Belusa collected a total of $290.00 for the draw. I asked our Regional II YEA Coordinator guest, Aaron Smith (Regional Official visit to our Chapter for YEA) to draw the winning ticket. The winner was Mr. David Underwood. Mr. Underwood generously donated his $145.00 back towards our campaign. I really do not recommend the winner to donate back to the campaign each time. For those who do not know yet, in the Dallas annual meeting, Mr. David Underwood has been nominated to the Society's next Treasurer executive position. There is an official election coming up but normally, there will be no contest for the position. You can safely assume that our own Chapter's Mr. David Underwood will be the next Society Treasurer in July 1, 2013 this year. This is amazing news for our Chapter and for our Region II. Congratulations Mr. David Underwood. You make us proud and put the Toronto Chapter on the map! The Society's RP Campaign Goal is $2,121,416.00 for this year. The Year to Date is at $592,819.00. Last year's Year to Date is $561,550.00. We are at 27.9% Goal. The Toronto Chapter's RP Campaign Goal is $32,000.00 for this year. The Year to Date is at $2,800.00. Last year's Year to Date is $2,929.00. We are at 8.8% Goal. Every month, the Society RP committee has a full report on the RP Campaign for the Society on the RP private web site at www.ashraerp.com. There is no password required so all of you can view the full report year to date anytime. Again, without generous research donors, ASHRAE Society will not be one of the few non for profit organizations in the world with a strong and viable Research Programs. The Research Projects defines ASHRAE as the leader in HVAC&R with our Handbooks, Standards and Guidelines. The world is looking at ASHRAE Society as the leader in HVAC&R. ASHRAE Society needs research for the future. If you are passionate and would like to contribute any amount, please contact me. The RP committee members will be contacting all last year's donors and this year's donors very shortly. Thank you. Michael Khaw, P. Eng. We had a great turn out at the last dinner meeting! About 1/3rd of the people were young engineers. 7 of which were non-chapter members who took advantage of the discounted rate. More importantly - nearly everyone walked across the street to have a pint at the bar afterwards! Planning for the next YEA event is currently underway. The details remain top secret at this time but we will update you next month. Michael Genin2012-2013 YEA Committee Chair

| Student Activities |
In January, I had the opportunity to travel with six students from the Toronto Chapter: Pushan Lele and Mahssa Ghajar (Ryerson University), Emma Wildeman & Aaron Wouters (Humber College), Kesha Jamieson and Kristen Pengelly (Seneca College). We explored: downtown Dallas, local buildings, the transit system, the AHR expo and most importantly ASHRAE Winter Conference. We had the opportunity to network with both professional and student members. We were able to meet up with our Region II members for a Moroccan styled dinner! We took many photos to document the experience - which we hope to share at the next meeting! It was a wonderful educational experience with many lessons learned, laughs and good memories. Thank you to all the students for making Dallas - a Texas sized delight to remember! Upcoming:
1. Next month (February) will be the 3rd Annual Career fair at Humber College. Check the events page of www.torontoashrae.com2. The next focus for Student Activities: The Student Design Competition! Teams who are interested in participating please contact your faculty advisor and have them email me. 3. Side note: I have a new official email: studentactivities@torontoashrae.com Please update your email client when you get a chance Later days!
