President's Message

Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year,

As you receive this gazette we will all be very relaxed and very full from our time off with family and friends for the Holiday Break.
I heard that Decemberfest was awesome!! Great job to all that put it together!

The Fairmont Royal York Hotel is always a very special place to have an event!

As we get back into the swing of things we have an interesting January speaker coming to talk to us.

Carl Nielsen will be here from Vancouver, BC to bring us up to speed on ASHRAE and BACnet Standards.

Carl is the Chair of the BACnet committee of Society and will bring us some great insight on where BACnet has come from when it was started to where it is today in the present.

Wishing everyone a very healthy and prosperous 2013!

If there is anything that I can assist you with as your President, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Thanks,

David Benedetti

Meeting Summary

Decemberfest 2012

Everyone enjoyed a dinner at the Firmont Royal York on December 3rd.   As is tradition with having no speakers at this mainly social annual gathering.   We had many people come with their signifcant others and guests.   The Chapter also likely set a new record for the youngest person to attend a dinner meeting.  We look forward to seeing everone in the new year for what promises to be a full agenda of meetings, tours, technical sessions and of course the annual career fai.

Happy New Year! I hope we all enjoyed some quality time off around the holidays, and feel rested and recharged for 2013.

If you are reading this, then the Mayan's were wrong and the world did not end on Dec 21st. What a great way to end off the year of 2012 - with the world still intact!

As we enter a new year, some of us do some self-reflection and come up with resolutions. Things we work on or towards during the year that will have a positive impact on ourselves and/or others. Things like going to the gym to work on that spare tire around the waist, being a little nicer to the in-laws, finally painting the bathroom or learning another language. Whatever it is I hope you stick with it!

Why don't some of us look at some resolutions to carry forward into our Chapter?

We have asked that some of our members volunteer as mentors for our younger membership. Making themselves available to share their stories, provide advice and guidance. I can remember being a student and having a year or so to go to graduation. I had no idea where I would go from there, what sorts of doors may be available, or the vast array of roles in our industry as I know them now. Where could I end up one day? I remember thinking that it would have been great to have someone experienced to talk to. To ask the types of questions my classmates didn't know how to answer, and speak to someone who has had a different professional experience than my teachers or professors. (I am sure I am not the only one to have thought those things at that time). Please consider volunteering - as you help the future of our industry and chapter.

Our student chapters are stronger than ever with representation from various colleges and universities throughout the greater Toronto area. We at the chapter have received quite a bit of interest from potential "mentee's" who would love the opportunity to speak with one of our experienced members.

I ask that we resolve to make our Toronto Chapter stronger by continuing to support the membership with our experiences, our stories and ideas, ensuring that all members feel like part of the ASHRAE family. Whether we are a mentor to somebody or sit down at a table for dinner with people we haven't met yet at our next meeting - let's continue making our chapter stronger!

Being on the membership committee this ASHRAE year has been a great experience. Between my involvement with YEA (Young Engineers in ASHRAE) and CTTC programs committee over the years, I can honestly say we are lucky to have people who genuinely want to be involved with Chapter activities, various committees and planning.

Look forward to 2013 with you!

Marc Bertolin.

Research Promotion

Like all of our other PAOE point opportunities, the 30% goal is a way to help our Chapter succeed during the 2012-13 Campaign.  Reaching 30% by the end of the year is a great way to make sure that our Chapter is on track to make (or exceed) our Goal by June 30th.

Our goal is $31,000.00 by June 30, 2013 and we are at $2,235.00 at this time.

However, do to the nature of the timing of the companies' donations for our Chapter; we have not achieved this 30%. We are actually at 7.2 %.

Our RP Night in our DecemberFest was a success. Our special RP Donor Raffle Draw collected $315.00 with many gift donations from the members.

The RP Power Point was presented to the members.

The next step in our campaign is to get all the RP committee members to start our calling and reach out to the Donors.

During the BOG meeting, we have discussed the possibility of hole sponsorships during the golf tournament that will not affect the break even budget for the golf tournament.

If you are interested to know more about Research, please check out www.ashrae.org/rp.

Thank you all.

Young Engineers in ASHRAE

The upcoming dinner meeting is the most important one of all - YEA Promotion Night! I hope to see every single YEA Toronto member out on January 7, 2013. The Region 2 YEA co-ordinator himself will be visiting. What makes the evening even more special is that we are offering a discount on the dinner meeting for all young engineers, even if they aren't a member of ASHRAE. So bring out a co-worker who is 35 years of age or less.

After the dinner meeting all young engineers are welcome to join us at the after-party for a drink. Just walk across the street to the Beir Markt (58 The Esplanade). It will be a chance to hang out with other YEA members and have a quality brew.

See you in the New Year.

2012-2013 YEA Committee Chair

Student Activities

Decemberfest is a wonderful celebration of the year at ASHRAE Toronto! I was able to attend my first one this year. Although not typically a student attended event due to the timing of exams - when you become a YEA member (because I know all you student members out there plan to!) you can come join in the fun next year.

The applications for the Dallas Winter Conference have been received and I am proud to announce we are sponsoring 8 students (in total) this year from Humber, Ryerson and Seneca! It should be an educational experience to say the least! Look forward to sharing the adventures upon our return.

A hope everyone had a happy and safe Holidays. 2013 promises wonderful things!

Career fair is coming up soon in February!

Later days!
