| President's Message |
Hi Everyone,
Our ASHRAE Toronto chapter year is well underway! Our first meeting was a great hit!
The first ASHRAE Toronto Chapter meeting took place on Oct 1st, 2012 at the Fantasy Farm. Before our dinner we had a tour of the Evergreen Brickworks that is a highly respected target LEED Platinum site with some very interesting technology being utilized. Thanks to our tour guides for their participation.
The dinner venue was excellent! Having some great BBQ in early October was awesome!
The guest speakers for the night, Luka Matutinovic, P. Eng. LEED AP BD+C of Halsall Associates & Christopher Makarewicz, Dipl.T B.Eng. of Jaga Canada Climate Systems had very informative presentations that gave us further insight on the Evergreen Brickworks plan from start to finish with the "Action to Green movement".
How a not for profit organization can strive for LEED Platinum is absolutely fantastic and should seriously poke other larger firms to do the same with their new and older properties they have.
On the International Society side of things, we have a lot going on. Please check in with www.ashrae.org on a regular basis to find out more about educational sessions, events and the upcoming Winter meeting in Dallas, TX in late January 2013. There has been a scholarship fund set up for our ASHRAE Society President, Lynne Bellanger that passed away very suddenly. Michael Khaw will bring us more news on this at one of our future meetings. As far as our chapter goes, we are "crazy busy" finalizing and putting the final touches on a fantastic chapter year!
Look forward to seeing you at the next meeting on November 5th.
Tune in on for more information on our Decemberfest meeting on Dec. 3rd at the Fairmont Royal York.
If there is anything that I can assist you with as your President, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Thanks,
David BenedettiPresident - ASHRAE Toronto Chapter 416-571-0046 dbenedetti@deltacontrols.com

October 2012 Meeting Summary
|
Octoer 2012 Dinner Presentation, ASHRAE Toronto Chapter
Centre for Green Cities - Evergreen Brick Works
Mr. Luka Matutinovic, P.Eng. LEED AP BD+C, Halsall AssociatesThe October 2012 dinner meeting featured a presentation about the Centre for Green Cities building at Evergreen Brick Works. The presenter was Mr. Luka Matutinovic, P.Eng. LEED® AP BD+C, a building energy specialist at Halsall Associates. The five story building Centre for Green Cities is a project of the not-for-profit organization Evergreen, whose mission is to Inspire Action to Green Cities through education, collaboration, and innovation.
The 50,000 sq. ft. Centre for Green houses offices, classrooms, and a Leadership and Welcome Centre. Halsall's Green Planning and Design Group was part of a multi-disciplinary design team that worked with Evergreen to generate different design alternatives. As the project's sustainability consultant, one of Halsall's roles was to model the energy performance of each alternative and assess its impact on energy savings, energy costs, occupant comfort, and greenhouse gas emissions. These detailed energy simulations allowed the design team to collaboratively explore various what-if scenarios and to fine-tune the building's HVAC, lighting and envelope, to achieve the high levels of energy performance desired by Evergreen. As a result, the final design is expected to be more than 50% better than ASHRAE 90.1 1999. Some of the many energy efficient features of this building are the following:
- Highly insulated envelope: including double-pane argon filled windows, with a special heat mirror film in the middle.
- Hollow core concrete slab floor system: Cool summer night air is drawn into the hollow floor. During the day, the pre-cooled floor absorbs heat from the room.
- Natural Ventilation: Windows can be opened for shoulder seasons. An email is sent when heating or cooling necessitates the windows to be closed. Solar chimneys help induce airflow through the building. Fans can help extend the periods of natural ventilation
- Condensing gas boiler: A biomass boiler which uses wood waste, was initially considered, but a condensing boiler was ultimately selected based on better part-load performance.
- Low mass wall radiators use less water at a cooler temperature than conventional radiators
- Heat recovery to pre-heat incoming ventilation air.
- Daylight, occupancy, and CO2 sensors
- Efficient T8 lights with fully-addressable controls.
In addition to the high-performance, low-energy design, the project features many sustainable design features which contribute to the target LEED Platinum rating.
The non-profit organization Evergreen is doing important work educating society about how to change course towards a better quality of life and more sustainable future.
The Centre for Green Cities at Evergreen Brick Works, targeting LEED Platinum, is one of their contributions towards those goals.
Using extensive energy modeling, Mr. Matutinovic and Halsall's Green Planning and Design Group, were able advise how to achieve substantial reductions in building energy use, without sacrificing comfort.
Low Mass Radiators
Mr. Christopher Makarewicz, Dipl.T, B.Eng. Jaga Canada Climate Systems
The second presentation of the evening was by Mr. Christopher Makarewicz, Dipl.T, B.Eng. of Jaga Canada Climate Systems. He discussed three topics: Low Mass radiators; the difference between the European standard EN442 and the North American standard IBR; and ECM motors versus AC Induction motors.
Low mass radiators
contain less water than traditional radiators. Low mass radiators contain only ¼ of a gallon of water; whereas, traditional radiators typically contain around 2 gallons. Inertia energy for a heat emitter is the amount of energy that is accumulated in the unit, before any heat is released into the room. When there is no further demand for heating, this inertia energy is released. Inertia energy is directly related to the mass of the heat emitter (and the specific heat capacity of the materials used). A traditional steel radiator has 2047 BTU of inertia energy; whereas a copper and aluminum, Low Mass element has 273 BTU of inertia energy.
North American IBR testing method versus the European EN442 testing method for convectors: One difference Mr. Makarewicz discussed is that the North American IBR testing method requires testing at one water temperature - 150°F. Ratings at other water temperatures are calculated by applying factors. The European EN442 testing method requires testing using three water temperatures.
The electronically commutated direct current (ECM) motor
has the highest electrical efficiency of any electrical motor, especially at reduced speeds. AC motors have energy losses through rotor conductors and energy losses from rotor slip. These are energy losses that ECM motors do not have. The ECM motor is also durable and has a long service life.
Mr. Christopher Makarewicz showed a number of interesting slides to demonstrate his points. There were infrared photographs of radiators in operation to show the concept of inertia energy and radiator heat output. Calculations were shown, which are used in the European EN442 standard for convectors, to give watts output, for varying water temperatures and air temperature. As well, there was a graph of ECM motor efficiency versus AC motor efficiency.

Implementing Ashrae Standard 189.1-2011 for High-Performance Green Buildings
On October 24, 2012, ASHRAE Toronto Chapter, partnered with CaGBC Greater Toronto and AEE Southern Ontario Chapters, offered the ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI) course "Implementing ASHRAE189.1-2011 for High Performance Buildings" for the first time to Toronto. The course was delivered by Dr. Tom Lawrence, Senior Public Service Associate, Driftmier Engineering Center of the University of Georgia and a member of the committee which wrote the ASHRAE 189.1-2011 standard. Dr Lawrence is also the past chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee 2.8, "Building Environmental Impact and Sustainability. Standard 189.1-2011, Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings provides the minimum requirements for the design, construction and plan for operation of high-performance green buildings. The standard can also be applied to: - New buildings and their systems
- New portions of buildings and their systems, and
- New systems and equipment in existing buildings
However, the provisions of Standard 189.1-2011 do not apply to:
- Single-family houses
- Multi-family structures of three stories or fewer above grade
- Manufactured houses (mobile homes) and
- Manufactured houses (modular).
The seminar presented and provided discussions on the "Scope", "Compliance", "Mandatory Provisions" and the "Prescriptive & Performance Paths" for each section namely:
- Sustainable sites
- Water use efficiency
- Energy efficiency
- Indoor environmental quality
- Building's impact on the atmosphere, materials and resources
- Construction and operations plans
The seminar was well received by the 28 attendants for its clear and concise explanation of the different aspects of standard 189.1-2011.

The HVAC industry is very unique in terms of how quickly it accepts new technology and design strategies, when compared to other industries such as the high tech industry. How many upgrades of cell phones, computers or computer operating systems have you had over the last 10 years? We use our cell phones and computers on a daily basis and it has become standard equipment that allows us to do business and organize our daily lives. When it comes to our cell phones or computers it is interesting that we are so quick to accept the new features, products and some of us will even wait in lines to be the first to get the newest and greatest; just like a child on Christmas morning. Another interesting point is that most of us are average consumers and are not in the high tech industry. This means that many of us know very little about how the product was manufactured, where it was manufactured, nor do we fully grasp the full benefits of the product. Yet we want it and are willing to pay for it.
The HVAC industry is where we spend our days and sometimes our nights. We know more about the technology, products and design strategies in this industry than we will ever know about our cell phones. So why are we so reluctant to be the first to try something new? A lot of times when discussing an untraditional design or a new product, the first question a client will ask is, "Who has done this before and am I the first?" If I had to bet, that same client has the newest and greatest (for this month) cell phone in their pocket and would gladly upgrade their software or buy the next revision of their phone as soon as it comes out.
The discussion of new HVAC technology yields the question, "What is the best product to use in my design or building?" As many of us know, it is not one product or system that makes a building efficient and comfortable, but a combination of systems that interact cohesively with one another. By combining new technology, creative engineering design, a mix of alternative energy products and intelligent controls, we should be well on our way to building better buildings.
We in the HVAC industry have to start to embrace newer technologies and design strategies without being scared that something may go wrong. It should be comforting to know that, most of the technology and designs in our industry are not as new as we think. They may have been implemented in different markets or have been around for decades in some cases. We have to make a decision as leaders to push forward, trust in ourselves and capabilities. In this era of green buildings and energy conservation it is essential to be creative and accept that with new concepts there will always be some challenge. Good thing we are here to solve those problems. Let's not be scared of new ideas and let's make the technology work for us!

Research Promotion
| |
Representing the Toronto Chapter as the RP Chair, I attended the one day Society RP Centralized Training on September 22, 2012 in Chicago.
I realized very quickly the importance of research to our ASHRAE Society and to the world.
- Improves our lives
- Protects us from harm
- Protects the environment
- Saves lives
ASHRAE Society is one of a few non for profit organizations in the world with a strong and viable research program. Without research projects, ASHRAE will not be where it is at right now and all our handbooks, standards and guidelines will not be same. The world is looking at ASHRAE Society as the leader in HVAC & R. ASHRAE Society needs research to plough into the future.
I truly understand that not everyone is in position to give the extra cash to the Society but at some point in your life or career, you will find something you are connected to passionately and start giving back. It is all about personal connection and timing.
ASHRAE Society set a record of $2,191,457.00 last year in their campaign year in one of the most difficult economic times in history. This year, the target goal is $2,200,000.00.
The target goal for Toronto Chapter is $29,000.00. Last year, we achieved $31,165.00.
I would like thank all individual donors of our membership and also the corporate companies in Toronto that have contributed for us to achieve our goal last year. I have organized a Donor Recognition Night/Research Promotion Night this December, next meeting, to officially thank all of you.
All research money donated in Canada comes back to Canada in research projects every year. None of the donations go to any administration cost.
Last meeting I started my campaign by doing a fun 50/50 draw during the meeting. As you know, $185.00 went to the target goal.
We have also collected $350.00 for our special 1st woman Society President's Lynn Bellenger Foundation Fund so ASHRAE society can achieve a special $100,000.00 Lynn Bellenger Foundation Fund. This fund is used to set up scholarship program for women engineers in our HVAC & R industry.
There is also something called a Full Circle Award of $600.00 fund where we collected from all our Chapter officers for Research. This is to show that all Toronto Chapter officers realized the importance of research to our society and set as examples to all.
If you are interested to know more, there is a Society page set up for convenience:
Thank you all. Toronto ASHRAE Research Promotion Chair

October was a busy month! We managed to have our first Chapter meeting and a distinguished lecturer in the same week! Dan Int-Hout spoke with a lot of energy and provided excellent insight into the technologies that are out there in the world of air distribution systems (effective and...not so effective). For those YEA and student members who didn't get to attend - part of what made Dan's presentation special was his style of presenting. He spoke on the level that was easily to relate to as a student and he was genuinely happy to answer questions. Did I mention there was also timbits and bagels...there is a formula for success at events: great presenter + food = awesome. Class dismissed.
Next week on Nov 5th we are having our 2nd Chapter meeting at Earth Rangers. If the word 'sustainability' makes you smile or say "Beam me up Scotty!" then you must come to our next meeting! A few days later on Thursday Nov 8, we are having a YEASA night! It is going to be a social night with great people and more food...if you join us I personally promise you, that you will be happier than a whomever lives pineapple under the sea.
Catch you on the flipside!
