| Greetings! |
Bro. Al has retired.
Dr. Al Meredith wrapped up his pastoral ministry at Wedgwood Baptist Church last Sunday. The transition over the last few months has been smooth. The staff is well prepared to lead during the interim. An interim pastor will be presented to the congregation soon.
Bro. Al and Kay are enjoying vacation before he begins his next act as an adjunct instructor at Dallas Baptist University. He is mentoring several local pastors in a formal process and many more informally. I'm confident he will also enjoy tennis to his heart's content.
I had a friend in seminary who attended Wedgwood and loved Bro. Al. One of my coworkers during my time with Texas Baptists likewise was a Wedgie and couldn't say enough good things about Bro. Al. You and I could add our own stories and memories.
Bro. Al gained national recognition for his leadership during one of the darkest times any church leader could imagine. He led with wisdom, grace, and love. To this day, he is called upon any time there is a similar tragedy in a church setting. Our Father in heaven continues blessing him with words of peace and comfort.
Bro. Al got to Fort Worth as quickly as he could and decided to stay. He settled in and led Wedgwood through many great days. He received me graciously when I visited him for the first time during my tenure as a Congregational Strategist. I was highly honored when he asked me to lead his team through Church Unique when I joined the TBA staff. It grieved me deeply when he told me he was planning to retire.
I'm confident he will become a popular interim pastor and a loved and feared professor. I'm glad that he is remaining in the area. I don't know what I would do without his friendship and his prayers.
Thank you, Bro. Al, for leading for a long time in one place. You have modeled well the role of pastor. You have served Wedgwood and Fort Worth exceptionally. You have worldwide influence through the ministry leaders you have mentored. Thank you for continuing to show the way through your transition and continuing ministry.
With gratitude,

App of the Month - OneNote
|
I am a dedicated Evernote user. I don't foresee that changing anytime soon. However, a number of friends and acquaintances have a bit of difficulty learning how to use Evernote to the fullest. Other friends are devoted to Microsoft Office tools and seldom venture beyond that suite of apps.
Enter OneNote. OneNote shares many of the features of Evernote and is part of Microsoft Office. It is a bright, shiny tool that is easy to learn and use. I've been playing with it for a couple of months now and can highly recommend it. Like most apps, there is plenty of free training on YouTube to get you up to speed quickly. (DiscoverBusiness.us provides two-minute videos that give a quick and effective introduction to many popular apps.)
I taught our Baby Girl how to use OneNote by creating a personal notebook with a tab for each of her law school classes. I showed her how she could take notes and record a lecture simultaneously. I demonstrated how she could tag the different text boxes on a page and how she could import tables, charts, and photos to any page. She can create to-do lists and clip website pages or articles with the OneNote web clipper extension. There are apps for phones, tablets, and the Apple watch.

Jay Harris - Thinking Really Outside the Box!
|

Several weeks ago I had the wonderful pleasure and honor to serve as a Missions Speaker at the TBA RA
Camp down at Riverbend. Through the day I met with sizable groups of grade school boys and their
counselors and shared the unique ways we are starting churches to reach the unreached. I told them
about the new church starts that are sharing Christ with the dispersed peoples from northeast India,
Nepal and Myanmar. We talked about Cowboy churches, Biker Churches and OutdoorLife Churches
that meet at Cabela's. Hispanic, African American and Anglo new churches were mentioned, all
reaching people who are not being reached for Christ.
Then the FUN began! I handed out sheets of paper and markers and asked the boys to create a new
church. They were to address: location, language(s), culture, needs and the name of the church.
Needless to say I was blown away. One by one the boys came to the front and shared their ideas for a
church that would be created to reach people who are not being reached. Here is a synopses of the
results:
Locations: Canada, China, Africa, Britain, Mexico, school, coffee shop, movie theater...
Languages: (Most were multi-lingual) Spanish, English, Chinese, French, German...
Cultures: reaching other kids, poor, foreign, just regular kids, people who want to have fun...
Needs: water, food, Bibles, $11,500 for renovations, helpers, playground equipment...
Names: The Rocket Ship Church, The Train Church, The Invisible Playground Church (my favorite)
Wow, what innovative, creative, insightful ideas for reaching the lost! I can't help but think that God
just invited a bunch of young men to invest their attention and lives in future churches that will go to
wherever, do whatever, be whatever and sacrifice all to reach unreached people who God loves and
Jesus died for.
How can you get involved in supporting a new church start?

Great Evaluation Tool

4 Helpful Lists
Looking for a good tool for your staff to use during a planning day? A tool that we use is called 4 Helpful Lists. This is a tool from the Paterson Center. Hope this is helpful to your team. Here's how it works.
1. Create five columns on white board or two white-pad sticky sheets (the latter is shown here).
2. At the top of the first four columns put the 4 questions: What's Right? What's Wrong? What's Confused? and What's Missing?
3. At the top of the 5th column write, "Core Issues."
4. Take from 45-90 minutes with a group to discuss any aspect of the organization, from the org as a whole to a single department, program or event.
5. Start by allowing people to populate any content with regard to the four questions.
6. After the first four columns have been populated, begin to consider and record core issues in the 5th column.
7. Keep in mind the four corresponding imperatives to each questions. Write these underneath each question: amplify, change, clarify and add (see the picture below).
8. Be ready for some break thru clarity.

Book Reviews
|
Normally in this space we consider books that are especially helpful to church leaders. Effort is made to hit the highlights and to provide recommendations. This time we will do something a bit different.
Our staff would like for you to join us in reading To Transform a City: Whole Church, Whole Gospel, Whole City, by Eric Swanson and Sam Williams, and Glocalization: How Followers of Jesus Engage a Flat World, by Bob Roberts. Community Engagement is one significant part of our strategy as an association. There are some local church leaders who have experienced significant success in this regard. Let's learn from them and apply their guidance in our communities.

We are to live as salt and light in every domain of community life. What does that look like where God
has planted your church? What is your church's local predicament? What are the biggest needs or problems around your church? What is your church's collective potential? What are the strengths of your church? What is your church's apostolic esprit? What are the passions of your leadership team? What makes your heart beat faster? The answers to these questions provide what Church Unique refers to as the Kingdom Concept. How can we extend God's Kingdom as we serve together across Tarrant County? Join us on this journey this fall as we read together, pray together, and serve together that God's Kingdom may increase through our combined efforts.

Christianity and Same Sex Marriage
|
Same-sex marriage has become legal throughout the United States for the first time in history. This change represents a culture shift that has been both rapid and momentous. American Christians who seek to build their faith from the Bible find that several ethical/theological positions are relevant to discussion of and response to the issue. Marriage, family, sexual behavior, church and state, religious liberty, and evangelism are all important to the discussion from a biblical Christian perspective.
A Guideline for Preparing your Church in the
Midst of Cultural Changes
Each Baptist church is an autonomous religious and legal entity. While Baptists share core principles, individual churches have the responsibility for determining how they will function based on their theology and current law. While the law sets certain standards for operation, each church has flexibility within those standards.
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that states cannot prohibit same-sex marriage. These questions and guidelines are designed to help your church think through ways to prepare for that ruling in addition to other potential religious liberty challenges.
The Christian Life Commission has resources to help churches in English and Spanish.

We are excited to announce that we have a new professionally developed 28 week lesson plan that makes Read2Win easier, more exciting, and more engaging than ever. We hope you will join us this year as we seek to partner with 40 elementary schools.
We want to ask you to do a few things:

Explore God for Kids & How to Introduce Your Church to Explore God
|
|
| |
|
Cast the Vision
__________ |
|
Explore God creates credible content for people with spiritual questions and curiosities about God, faith, religion, and purpose. Who has those? Seems like just about everybody-including us. Now is the time to tell your congregation about Explore God and let them know what's ahead. |
|
Leadership Checklist
__________ |
|
Here are five tips to help your church or ministry get excited about the Explore God DFW Community Outreach Initiative!
- Play a Video.
Show this video during your church gathering or distribute it via e-mail. Check out these other promotional videos that you can use as well. - Cast the Vision.
Tell your members why your church has chosen to participate in the movement. Share with them about the goals of the initiative: To unite the Church in inviting the surrounding community to explore God To promote the initiative with cutting-edge marketing and advertising To train Christians in how to have spiritual conversations and how to facilitate discussion groups To encourage the unchurched to attend an Explore God sermon series or discussion group - Use the Intentional Relationships Pre-Outreach Series.
The Intentional Relationships series sets the stage for The 7 Big Questions series by encouraging Christians to cultivate genuine friendships that can pave the way for meaningful spiritual conversations. Many churches choose to use this series a few months before launching the initiative. You can download the guides here: Intentional Relationships Sermon Outlines Intentional Relationships Discussion Group Guide - Visit ExploreGod.com.
Encourage your congregation to visit www.ExploreGod.com to watch some videos, read some articles, and familiarize themselves with the site. Help them see it as a resource for life that can be used to share their faith well beyond the Community Outreach Initiative. - Plug In via Social Media.
The Explore God Facebook page and the Explora Dios Facebook page each reach more than 1 million people a day and are a great way to practice having conversations about God. We're also on Twitter, Instagram, Google+, tumblr, and Pinterest.

Announcing Explore God for Kids
__________ |
|
|
The 7 Big Questions is now available in a format tailored to children ages 4-14. Explore God for Kids meets kids where they are and allows them to explore God on their terms. Like all Explore God content, it is completely ecumenical and free to use.
|
|
Tip for Today: Pray for Friendships
__________ |
|
|
Building intentional relationships with people in our communities is a key step to a successful Community Outreach Initiative. Pray this week that God would instill in your members a love for their neighbors, friends, and coworkers, and that these friendships would be the foundations that lead to deep, meaningful conversations about God.
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
-Matthew 22:37-40

News from the Churches
|
Rosen Heights Baptist Church has called Inavi Jimo, formerly serving as the Associate Pastor, to be its full time Pastor. Inavi and his wife Florence have accepted the call and he has assumed his new responsibilities as of July 19, 2015. Florence is currently serving as the Minister of Worship and Music at Rosen Heights Baptist Church.
Inavi was born in Nagaland, India to a committed and God centered Christian family. After completing his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, he received his Master of Divinity and served in the Sumi Baptist Church of Nagaland as a Youth minister and Associate Pastor before coming to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary to earn his Master of Theology degree. After graduating from the seminary, God called him to Rosen Heights Baptist church in 2010. Inavi and Florence are humbled and blessed to do His ministry here at Rosen Heights. Come worship with us and hear him preach at RHB.
Darlene Walker at darwalkr22@msn.com has a set of tone chimes for sale. She has used them exclusively for ministry to senior adults. However, she will no longer be doing that due to physical issues. It is an HB 25-note Chromatic set and is in excellent condition. They are stored in a rolling carrying case. The purchase price from Suzuki is $839. She is offering her set for $500. She would like for them to go to a church and be used for quality purpose. If your church is looking for chimes, she can be contacted at 512-736-3554 (cell).
Barry Braman at BBraman@shadyoaks.org is looking for a two octave set of used hand bells for a mission trip to Slovenia in 2016. He would either purchase them or would love for someone to donate unused bells for the trip. They will leave the bells in Slovenia for missionaries Randy and Joan Bell so they can use them in their work. Right now, there are no bells in the country and Joan thinks this would be a great tool for outreach. His contact number is 817-282-0237.
