| Greetings! |
Thirty years ago, we said our I-do's and hit the ground running. We are still running today. We ran faster once upon a time. We ran farther than ever one cold December day and set new distance records with every step over those last three miles. We have run in the heat, the cold, the damp, the wet, the dry, and the wind. We run on tracks and trails, streets and roads. Sometimes it feels like we are running on empty. However, we are still running and running together in this race of a lifetime.
A few runners have joined us along the way. They are running their own races now, and they are running to win. I'll never forget the day when our son outran me for the first time. What a thrill that was for him! What a joy that was for me! I passed him the baton and he is outrunning any pace I ever hoped to set.
Our Baby Girl runs with the fluid grace of a world-class athlete. The passion and fire within her drives her forward step by step toward the goal set before her. Knocked down and skinned up, she arose to catch and surpass her competition. You better prepare well to compete with her for she will run you off your feet!
The latecomer to our team runs for the sheer delight of enjoying our company. Her laughter makes our workouts fun. She constantly reminds us that winning means different things to different people. She demonstrates that each event contains its own set of rewards.
Nothing clears the head or gives a person space to ponder and to pray like a long run. Nothing expels the pent-up frustrations of life like a sprinter's workout. Nothing calms the soul like a good, long walk with the one you love more dearly than you love yourself.
Our puppy is our most playful running companion. Our Big Dog is our most protective. Their companionship makes us relax and provides energy that emerges from beneath the worries and weightiness of our days.
The puppy will move away with our Baby Girl when she begins law school. Our Big Dog will move away when our son returns from overseas. My original running partner will remain. I've run farther than I ever expected because of her. I've run faster than I ever imagined. I've won more victories than can be numbered. I've enjoyed almost every step.
We celebrated our anniversary early on the ski slopes of Park City, Utah. We will celebrate further on the trails that stretch for miles near our home. We will adorn ourselves in our running gear and hit the trail. We have miles to go before we sleep. We will run in lockstep until then along the course marked out before us.
Run with perseverance,

Todd McMichen is a friend who recently wrote Leading a Generous Church: Making Disciples without Chasing Money. This book is part of the Church Unique Intentional Leader Series, which is based on Will Mancini's Church Unique. Todd is the Chief Campaign Officer and Lead Navigator for Auxano Campaigns.
What distinguishes this stewardship book from others in this genre is that the author guides a leadership team through the process of discovering biblical truth and applying it within their unique context.
McMichen gives three instructions for staff teams: First, read a chapter from the book of Proverbs every day and take notes of all the wisdom recorded related to resources. Second, read and reflect on the passages he provides. Third, fully participate in a weekly Staff Team Up.
A Staff Team Up is a two to three-hour block of time set aside for team collaboration. These sessions are for the purpose of sharing insights from the week's work and developing tools for action and implementation. There are four weeks of readings and Staff Team Up meetings.
Two appendices direct staffs toward churchwide applications. Appendix 1 outlines a process for launching a church-wide discipleship journey focused on developing a comprehensive generosity strategy. McMichen provides an example of what a year's worth of stewardship education looks like in a church setting.
Appendix 2 provides suggestions for a generosity sermon series. Six messages from the book of Exodus are outlined. A pastoral team can use these ideas to develop a series applying their discoveries from the weekly reading in Proverbs.
This book is a tool church leadership teams will benefit from greatly. They will learn to think about developing generous disciples without sounding like all they care about is money.

App of the Month - ToDoist
| |
I've been using an app for the last couple of years called Nozbe. It serves as my to-do list and project manager. It is a great tool that integrates nicely with several of my other favorite tools like Evernote and Dropbox. However, the annual renewal rolled around and I experienced sticker shock. I guess I've run out of discounts.
I heard about ToDoist from one of my favorite YouTube providers, DottoTech. Check out Steve Dotto. He has some of the best app reviews and Evernote tools you will find. He is brief, to the point, and fun to watch.
ToDoist is simple, elegant, and much less expensive for those of us who are inclined toward budget-mindedness. The learning curve is blessedly short. A number of great video tutorials are available on YouTube. The iPhone and iPad apps sync perfectly and help me stay focused day by day and throughout each day.

You are most likely familiar with TED Talks. If you are the one person who has not yet discovered TED, check out ted.com and search for a topic or two of interest to you and learn from some of the brightest minds in the world.
We recently drove from the Houston area home by way of College Station. We listened to the TED Radio Hour from NPR which is available on iTunes as a podcast. The topic was organization. Ecologist Deborah Gordon in the first segment was discussing how ants organize. All I could think of was the verse from Proverbs telling us to study ants. Her insights make great sermon illustrations.
Another segment featured two women whose town was hit by a devastating tornado. They took charge of organizing the relief effort in the absence of anyone else who would do so. Their insights regarding human behavior in disaster relief situations was particularly applicable to ministry settings.

Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the uttermost parts of the Earth!

Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the uttermost parts of the Earth!
by Jay Harris
In Acts 1:8 Jesus commands us to be his witnesses. He addresses the spectrum of our witness by giving us the picture of ever-increasing, concentric circles; our hometown, state, nation and world (my now translation). One way that you as an individual or you as a church can invest in Christ's witness in each of the circles mentioned is to invest in a new church start and do it in each of your concentric circles.
I visited this week with Dave Arden, a Church Planter Catalyst in Phoenix. He is joining a handful of church planters who are bringing the cold water of the gospel to the dry, empty and thirsty Phoenix area of over 4 million people by starting a new church!
Here is the challenge: Prayerfully consider connecting with a new church start in Tarrant County as well as one in Texas, one within the US and one in another country. We can help you discover these possibilities with relationship we have established in each of the circles of impact. Let's talk- Jay

Rev. Jim McGinlay Retiring from FBC Lakeside
|
Rev. James D. McGinlay takes "early retirement" at 82, but not retiring from preaching.
Rev. James D. McGinlay, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lakeside for the past 22 years, was born in Ontario, Canada into a preacher's home. In his formative years, that home moved from Ontario to New Jersey, to Pennsylvania, to California and then New York-- all his father's pastorates.
As a young man, sports was a big part of Jim's life and his talents took him all the way to the New York Yankee's organization until a knee injury ended a promising career.
At college time Jim attended Bob Jones University and then off to Southwestern Seminary and preaching all along the way. In his nine years in evangelism he graced the pulpit in over 500 churches across America.
His pastoral ministry included five churches, Archer City, Lubbock, and Greenville, Texas. Then off to Phoenix, Arizona and finally in 1993 to his present pastorate, The First Baptist Church of Lakeside in Fort Worth.
All this with Ms. Dottie at his side for just under 59 years. He still calls her his college sweetheart. And they are blessed with two children, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.
At 82 Jim says; "God called me to preach, He didn't call me to quit. When will I quit?" he says: "When I'm unable to stand -- or I get dingie." (ding-e)
For 22 years he has led First Baptist Lakeside with the same theme he has used since being called to preach at age 17: "Holding forth Christ, the light that never goes out."
After preaching for 65 years and pastoring over 54 years, it is easy to see that in his church, in his preaching and in his life, for Rev. Jim McGinlay,,,, that "Light" has certainly never gone out.
Sunday, May 3 has been designated Jim McGinlay Day at First Baptist Lakeside, Ft. Worth where he has pastored for 22 years.
But though he is retiring from the pastorate, Bro. Jim will continue to preach the gospel in the churches in our area.
Oh that our Lord will continue to raise up "God called" preachers and pastors like Rev. James D. McGinlay.

LifePlan: What's Important Now?
|
The W.I.N. Wheel is a tool from LifePlan and StratOp that helps individuals and teams focus on What's Important Now (W.I.N.). It comes to us from Coach Lou Holtz. He taught his football players to focus on what's important now in every situation in a football game. Suppose your team scores and goes up by seven. What's important now? Suppose the other team scored and is now winning by seven. What's important now? What's important now when your team turns the ball over? How could you fruitfully use this tool in your personal life? How could you use it with your leadership team?
