| Greetings! |
Years ago, I spent a few hours with a Southern Baptist leader even his adversaries admired. He was known for his gracious spirit and gentle authority. Baptist battles were a hot topic in those days and naturally arose in our conversation. The idea of a split within the Southern Baptist Convention was stated. This wise leader said something to the effect that, "There will not be a split among Baptists. We will fracture."
Pondering that statement over the last twenty years leads to the conclusion that his insight was right on target. Nowhere is this seen more clearly than in the matter of cooperative giving. Institutions, agencies, and boards work outside traditional lines in seeking support. Churches are encouraged by authority figures to go around natural lines of relationship to increase giving to their particular agency or cause. The biggest names with the loudest voices gather the most donors.
One team in Baptist life awakens every morning with a passion to see men and women, boys and girls in Tarrant County come to know Jesus Christ and to grow in their discipleship all of their lives. Only one team in Baptist life is fully devoted to church starting, leadership development, and community engagement in Tarrant County. Only one team in Baptist life has as its mission, Investing in relationships to connect others with Christ in Tarrant County. Only one team in Baptist life has the vision of Creating a culture of Christ-centered catalysts in Tarrant County.
This information is not stated in a spirit of competition. Rather, it is a call to return to the cooperation we once enjoyed. We do not have big names and loud voices to rally donors. Instead, we have deep relationships and a heritage of presence. Yes, it's easier to see our warts up close and personal than it is to see the blemishes of those farther away. It's also easier to see exactly what's happening right here at home.
Consider that the pastors and church leaders of Tarrant Baptist Association have trained over 200 of their peers in Venezuela. The troubles in that country are leading to a significant move of God. The churches are well prepared for making disciples who make disciples and start more churches. This same discipleship process has now been initiated in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada among the pastors and church planters there. Our NAMB missionary wants the churches there to major on multiplying disciples and invited us to assist them in making that happen.
Our staff is assisting three other associations across the state with Association Unique. We are facilitating the Church Unique process with them to help them gain clarity for their ministries for the years ahead. Our staff is currently working with five churches in the Church Unique process with another church on the horizon. Our staff is working with Riverbend Retreat Center by applying Church Unique to their setting. We call it Camp Unique. Executive Director Alton Belew will take this process across the state and around the country in the years ahead assisting camps and retreat centers with missional clarity.
Our staff is now certified to lead other significant leadership development and church consulting processes like StratOp, LifePlan, and leadership coaching. In the next few months, each of our directors will become Professional Certified Coaches, following the lead of our Director of Church Starting, Jay Harris. This requires many hours of training equivalent to several college courses along with 750 hours of actual coaching experience. Each of our directors serves as an instructor for Coaching4Clergy.
In the next few weeks we will host an open house for you to enjoy the renovation of our offices. You will find it remarkably well-suited for training, development, and staff retreats. This week we hosted a church from Conroe that was interviewing potential staff members and facilitated Camp Unique and LifePlan training. We are here to serve you.
Take a good look at this newsletter. There are so many more exciting opportunities than can be noted or commented on in this space. You make that possible. Your gifts invest in the churches and ministries of Tarrant Baptist Association. Your gifts change lives, multiply disciples, and start churches.
Tarrant Baptist Association is deeply invested in you. We are the one group in Baptist life that can say that with utmost sincerity and truthfulness. We are the one group in Baptist life who arises every morning to help you serve our communities with ever-greater efficiency and effectiveness. Let's rebuild our cooperative spirit beginning here at home with the four hundred churches of Tarrant Baptist Association.
How may we serve you today?

Last Will and Testament

Last Will and Testament
I have often in conversation heard people say they do not have a will. This is an opportunity to introduce the reality that everyone does in fact have a will. The question is if it is your will or the will of the state because those who pass from this life without a valid last will and testament accord to the state their rights regarding their earthly possessions. It is estimated that up to 70% of Americans die without a will which is known as dying intestate.
Your last will and testament is the foundational legal document that will direct the administration and distribution of your estate. This is where you'll name your fiduciary (also known as an executor) to make decisions on your behalf and on behalf of your beneficiaries. If you have minor children, your will should outline your choice of guardians for them in case of your death. Your will is also the first point at which you outline your wishes for the assets you leave behind, making choices such as to whom, in what time frame and how you'd like assets to be distributed. For most of us, a will is the most economical and effective way to pass assets to our loved ones or leaving a legacy gift for God's work.
Once completed, a will still needs periodic maintenance. Not even the most carefully drawn will remains sound permanently. It is a good rule of thumb to revisit your will once a year to account for changes in your life such as:
● Change in marital status
● Birth of a child
● Interstate move
● Gifts
● Change in assets
● Death
● Tax laws
● Growing commitment
Do I really need a will?
If you don't have a will... (dying intestate)
● Texas law dictates how and to whom your property passes
● The court decides who takes care of your children in the event of minors
● The law dictates who administers your estate
● Not a penny will go to charity
But if you do have a will...
● You decide who will receive your property when you die (family, special friends, etc.)
● You choose who takes care of your children
● You can create trusts that can reduce and possibly eliminate estate taxes
● You select an "independent executor" to manage your estate and carry out the directions in your will
● You can make provision for Christian causes, thereby practicing good stewardship (Matthew 25:21)
● You can greatly reduce the expenses involved in settling your estate
● You enhance your peace of mind and heart
● Each spouse's will can only dispose of their half of the estate, so each one needs to have their own will
● You can distribute your estate in a way that better reflects the best division among your adult children. Dividing everything equally ("share and share alike") may not best recognize that there may be different needs among different children.
If you have questions or would like to know how to get started on preparing a will, feel free to call (817-927-1911, ext. 213) or write (gary@tarrantbaptist.org). I will be glad to refer you to a Christian attorney who can help you with this important matter.

Hearing God Retreat
|
It's Already April, and 2015 is flying, need time to slow down and listen to God?
Hearing God Retreats have been planned throughout the year to help make space for you to spend with God. The next retreat is April 23-24 at Riverbend Retreat Center. The retreat will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday and end at noon on Friday. The cost is $50 and includes a private room, dinner and breakfast. This is a retreat. You will have two large blocks of time to spend with the Lord, sleeping and/or taking a walk. You will be guided through some Bible readings and other readings to help you connect with the Lord. If you are interested, please contact Becky Biser at becky@tarrantbaptist.org or sign up online here.
Hearing God Retreat Testimony
In the late summer of 2014, I was getting a bit confused and stressed on various issues that were showing up in life. I felt weary and I was feeling the pressure from Sunday to Sunday. It was in Oct 2014 that I saw an email from Jay inviting all pastors and planters to join him and the TBA staff on a Hearing God Retreat. I signed up, and it was the best experience/investment I have ever made.
I went from weary, emotionally drained, and fatigued to refreshed and strengthened. The retreat it self was a very simple, nothing extravagant - just me and God, and this was the best thing that could've happened. We were encouraged to slow down, pause, and just hear from HIM. I truly believe that it was the answer to my prayers. During that time alone with God - meditating on His word and hearing from Him, I was able to take a look at my life and rearrange areas. I understood that in order to have a healthy church, I needed to make sure it had a healthy leader - this meant consistent and uninterrupted time with God.
This short retreat sparked a whole new path for me, my family, and our church. I created a weekly rhythm in my personal life by spending an extended amount of time with the Lord on Monday and then 30-60min daily intervals Tues-Friday. I've shared with my wife the practice of hearing from God through reading and meditating on Scripture as presented to us at the retreat. In addition, the Hearing God Retreat sparked our DETOX series this past January... purifying the soul through prayer and fasting. The stories that came from our people through this time in prayer and fasting were incredible...stories of God's faithfulness and goodness.
The Hearing God Retreat is something that has made a lasting impact in my own life. I would encourage every church planter to begin with this retreat before planting and then making it a yearly event. It will refresh the soul and align your heart to God's. I am Thankful to God for Jay, Becky, Gary, and the whole TBA staff for not only partnering, but also walking along side of planters like me!

reFOCUS goes to Canada
|
reFOCUS goes to Canada The reFOCUS journey that has so impacted pastors and leaders here in Tarrant County has not only reached into the country of Venezuela but now has stepped into Canada, a beautiful country with beautiful people! Kevin Barke, pastor at Fellowship BC in Saginaw along with Troy Wolfe, pastor at Movement Church in Rhome and Jay Harris on the TBA staff, made the long trip to Vancouver, British Colombia the last week of March. There they began the two year journey with ten pastors, church planters and denominational leaders in the West Coast Baptist Association. This journey is one of the partnership investments TBA churches and staff are making in Vancouver, a NAMB Send City. The group bonded quickly and dove deeply into discussions of Encountering, Engaging and Enjoying our walk with Christ. This, the first of four retreats focused on spiritual intentionally and laid the foundation for future retreats on disciple-making, personal spiritual uniqueness, church vision and community impact. The experience will be highlighted by monthly peer group meetings via phone or internet.
On the Sunday following the retreat, the TBA team visited three of the churches represented by the participating pastors and enjoyed an amazing blend of cultures and languages. Kevin, Troy and Jay will be returning in September for Retreat 2. Additional new peer groups will prayerfully begin along with the three existing groups. Please pray for all the Vancouver pastors and leaders involved and for God's clear direction in our partnership in the coming years.

What if your life was so full of the Holy Spirit that he naturally spilled out every time someone bumped into you? God the Holy Spirit wants to fill us, empower us, and control us. He wants to express his love and grace through us. These are truths we know and sometimes experience. What if these experiences were continual in nature?
Steve Sjogren and Dave Ping wrote Outflow: Outward-Focused Living in a Self-Focused World to address the idea of living daily in the fullness of the Spirit of God. This encouraging book leads us toward discovering how to live a life "filled to the brim with God's love, joy, and hope."
This book is written in a devotional format. There are five readings each week for five weeks. The sections are as follows:
- A Life Overflowing
- Outward toward God
- Outward toward Family and Friends
- Outward toward Your Community
- Outward toward Your World
This is an excellent resource for a staff team or small group. A group discussion guide is included. Practical steps for putting these ideas into practice are also included.

DRT Beach Reach
| The Tarrant Baptist Disaster Relief Team recently returned from two weeks of service during Beach Reach at South Padre Island. They made and served pancakes from 10:00 pm til 3:00 am and cooked supper for 400. Below is an excerpt from an article published in the Baptist Standard. March 26, 2015 By KALIE LOWRIE / TEXAS BAPTIST COMMUNICATIONS
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND- During the three weeks covering spring break for various schools, 1,060 volunteers from 39 Baptist Student Ministries shared the gospel during Beach Reach on South Padre Island. Volunteers engaged other young adults in 11,765 spiritual conversations in a variety of settings. As a result, 110 new believers prayed for salvation, and 32 people recommitted their lives to Christ.
John Hooser, leader of the Tarrant Baptist group, said his volunteers found the time so rewarding, he had to turn people away from serving when his team roster filled this year. "I see these young people from BSMs all over the state, and it tells me that the church is in great shape," Hooser said. "By us serving, not only are we sharing the gospel, but we are also keeping these kids safe. Spring breakers are getting food, but they are also being cared for physically and spiritually." At the end of the second and third weeks of Beach Reach, hundreds of students gathered on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico for a celebration-the baptism of 53 new Christians.

App of the Month - MSOutlook
| |
I recently read that Microsoft Outlook has a new app for the iPhone and Android platforms. I haven't used Outlook since moving to the Google productivity suite while I worked for Texas Baptists. However, many people still use Microsoft Office and its ubiquitous programs that often come pre-loaded on new computers. Microsoft's product line has shown its age for the last few years as Google and Apple apps rapidly outpaced them in developing tools for the mobile marketplace.
Microsoft has upped its game recently with new options that rival the competition in every way. The Outlook app for iOS and Android is an excellent tool that brings a level of vitality and comprehensiveness that at least equals other apps of its kind. It works seamlessly with the relatively new Office 365 suite of products. Now all of the MSOffice products are fully mobile and sync across devices. This is especially helpful if that is your preferred toolset.
Take the Outlook app for a spin if you're looking for an email client that provides maximum flexibility with MSOffice.
