Greetings! |
Some years ago I found a best friend in ministry. We worked together and our families were close. We spent a lot of time in one another's homes. We traveled together, laughed together, prayed together, and wept together.
I cannot tell you how special that was to me. I don't think I had experienced that depth of friendship outside of our marriage to that point.
Then things inexplicably went sideways. I don't remember all the details and I don't care to recall them now. The relationship soured. He took another church. We stopped talking.
Over a quarter of a century has passed since one man almost single-handedly ran off three-fourths of the church staff members where I served for a short time during seminary. He didn't like the pastor and made life difficult for him. He even attempted to enlist me in his cause to get rid of my friend and mentor. I refused the offer. None of us lasted long after that.
A quiet but respected leader in one of the churches I served declined an opportunity to lead a stewardship campaign we were undertaking. He reasoned that he had agreed to lead another unnamed effort in the church. I soon discovered that effort was a campaign to remove me as pastor. I'm pretty sure I would not have offered him the chance to lead our capital campaign if I had known that.
These are difficult memories. I don't enjoy recalling them. However, I am happy to tell you the rest of the stories.
That last man and I had a long talk a couple of years ago. As far as it depends on me, and as far as I can tell with him, we are at peace. I enjoy peace.
When I was with Texas Baptists, I worked with the church where that man engineered the forced departure of most of the staff during my seminary days. He hobbled down the aisle on a cane at the end of my presentation. We chatted like old friends for a moment. Tears formed in his eyes and he blurted out, "I've never gotten over how you left here."
Emotions prevented him from saying more. I couldn't say or do anything but hug him. Sometimes a good hug is about the most healing medicine in the world.
This week I received a letter from my former best friend in ministry. Let the contents remain between us. An exchange of voicemails ensued. Connection was made at last. A friendship was restored. We made plans to hug it out soon.
I wish I could tell you that there is no one who holds me in contempt. However, I can think of a couple of conversations I still need to have at some point. I can tell you that forgiveness feels so very good, both giving it and receiving it.
Who needs your forgiveness? Who do you need to seek out for reconciliation? What are we waiting for?
David

Tarrant Team Trains 400 in Venezuela
|
A team of three Tarrant Baptist Association leaders, Ricky Cotto, Melba Carmon and Dora Martinez, traveled to Maracaibo, Venezuela on Wednesday, January 22 to lead Bible study and Vacation Bible School training as a part of a three year partnership Tarrant Baptist Association has had with the Maracaibo Baptist Association. They had anticipated having 80 participants, but ended up training 400 leaders. Domingo Chacin, Association Executive Director, is already requesting that the team returns to continue training his leaders.

Sponsoring Churches Needed for New Church Starts
|
We are presently working with a number of new church starters who are in the early stages of starting a church. These are going through the process of praying through their calling and developing the God-directed plan to address the needs of their target group. Most do not have one sponsor much less two or three.
The challenge to our established churches is open our eyes to the opportunities of new church start sponsoring. We have large and small TBA churches sponsoring the works but it is still a very small percentage of the almost 400 TBA churches.
In the sponsoring role your church can provide prayer and mentoring support, a limited funding commitment, space for meeting, materials or furniture, office space or equipment and /or whatever you have that they may need.
Call me and let's get together and talk about the rich blessing you can be to a new church start and how that new start will bless you and your church.

App of the Month
|
I have been trying out time management apps for the last year. Search the Apple App Store
or its competitors and you will find at least a dozen good tools. But which one is the silver bullet for ultimate productivity? In reality, none of them are. They only organize your work according to a particular system of logic. You and I still have to do the work. You knew there was a catch, right? The trick is finding the tool that fits how you and I think and work. The two best solutions I found for the way I think and work are Azendoo and Nozbe. Azendoo is a delight to look at. Its customizable features feel right. Its range of tools is impressive. I can almost recommend it. However, it doesn't quite fit the Getting Things Done system by David Allen. Getting Things Done is one of those books that you must read even if you don't plan to adopt his organization system. He will help you think through how you organize, arrange, and process your workflow. The app that works best with GTD from my perspective is Nozbe. Try the free version for a month or so. You will find a tool that is set up from the beginning to fully integrate the GTD system. Your Next Actions, the most important things you need to do each day, are at the top of the page. Your Inbox, stuffed with all the things you need to do at some point, comes next. The Projects file follows that along with all associated notes, research, and to-do's. Nozbe integrates easily with Evernote, Dropbox, and Google Calendar. Nozbe will not do the work for you, but it will empower you to master your workflow and keep your workflow from mastering you.

Brenda Chaddock is a Legacy Leadership trainer. I've had the privilege of learning from her on several different occasions. She is wonderfully perceptive and delights in drawing out the best in each person. She constantly disarms me with how well she understands me.
A year or so ago she gave me a book that she said I would enjoy. I finally got around to consuming it. The book is Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking, by Susan Cain. This is a great book. There's a good reason it resides on the bestseller lists.
You may or may not be an introvert. I lean that direction. I love spending time with people individually, in small groups, and in large groups. I love even more my time alone in my wingback chair with a book in my hands. That is where I gain energy.
Ms. Cain's research is impeccable, her illustrations are illuminating, and her applications are practical and insightful. Read all the way through A Note on the Dedication where she talks about her grandfather, a Brooklyn rabbi and an introvert. She says, "He was a shy person who had trouble making eye contact with the audience, but he was so bold in his spiritual and intellectual explorations that when he spoke the congregation swelled to standing-room only," (p. 267).
Empower the introverts in your life with the understanding you gain from this book.
