E-Challenge

News from the Tarrant Baptist Association
Greetings!

Some of the men and women I have long admired passed from this life into glory over the last few months.  I don't recall seeing their names in the major news media alongside politicians and other celebrities in the year-end lists of the honored dead.  However, heaven surely rejoices at the continuing impact of their life work.

Roy Fish died last year.  Shortly thereafter Calvin Miller passed away.  Recently Justice Anderson joined their company.  These men had outsized impact on who I am today.

I was new to Southern Baptist life as a college freshman.  A cute redhead in my psychology class invited me to attend a free lunch at the Baptist Student Union.  I attended, got involved, and later attended Leadership Training Conference in Waco.  Calvin Miller spoke several times including the most memorable message from Isaiah 6 I've ever heard.  He had recently written The Singer.  I bought it and began a habit of reading everything he wrote.  I kept up with his literary output for many years.  I still have several of his books on my to-read list.

A pastor who knew him well arranged a lunch for the three of us.  Dr. Miller was teaching at Southwestern at the time and was experiencing a measure of fatigue and frustration.  During a lull in the conversation I asked him what he was reading.  He mentioned reviewing some academic texts and journal articles.  He asked me what I was reading and I told him Celebration of Discipline.  He sat bolt upright and leaned in toward me and asked if I had read Dallas Willard's Spirit of the Disciplines.  He said, "That's a book I wish I could read again for the first time."

I attended a Christian writer's conference at Glorieta a few years ago.  I walked to a round table in the cafeteria at breakfast one morning where only one other person sat.  I asked his permission to sit and saw Calvin Miller look up at me and call me by name.  We discussed our writing projects.  He asked what I was working on and I told him.  I regretted it a few minutes later when he told me that he was working on a similar idea.  His book sits on my shelf now; mine is still locked inside my head.

It was Calvin Miller who encouraged a roomful of us to write and to create works of art that would change the world twenty years before that encounter at Glorieta Student Week.  I probably would have given up on my writing dreams if it had not been for his example and encouragement.

I am not an evangelist.  However, Roy Fish taught me how to do the work of an evangelist.  He taught me how to create evangelistic systems.  He taught me how to have evangelistic conversations.  He taught me how to read books that would make me a better evangelist.

Dr. Fish was in the congregation when I filled the pulpit at a local church some months ago.  That was intimidating.  I told a story about an evangelistic encounter that I had with a man who came to our church seeking groceries.  Dr. Fish complimented me on the message afterward and specifically mentioned that story.  I had the privilege of reminding him that he was the one who taught me how to have that conversation.

Dr. Justice Anderson practically bounded into our missiology class on the first day.  He was tall, thin, handsome, and full of joy.  He didn't teach missions, he passionately lived it before us.  He made us read more than I thought fair upon perusal of the syllabus.  I ended up reading more than I was assigned.  My heart beat fast when he taught and when he prayed.

I quit running from God regarding missions in Dr. Anderson's class.  I asked God how I could best serve his mission in the world.  The vision I received was far different from living in darkest Africa.  My theology of mission was radically reformed under Dr. Anderson's leadership.  One of the great delights of my life was telling him recently what God continues doing in my life regarding missions.  He was at least as excited as I.

Should we make it through this calendar year alive, more of our dear loved ones, mentors, and friends will precede us home.  Let us thank God for them and let us thank them while they are living for how they have led us into a fuller, deeper understanding of God and his mission.

At the same time, let us live our own legacy today.  Let us create lives by our daily spiritual disciplines and work that will lead many into God's Kingdom.

Tarrant Baptists Partner with the Fort Worth ISD,
the Rainwater Foundation and the
State Convention to help students
By Becky Biser

When the Fort Worth ISD approached TBA concerned about the achievement gap of students and their desire to start Freedom Schools, we stepped up to the plate. Two Freedom Schools were held during the summer of 2012 at Trimble Tech High School and Rising Star Baptist Church. These two schools were funded by a grant from AT&T and the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

Working with Dr. Danna Diaz, we learned that another AT&T grant would not be available during the summer of 2013. We felt that God wanted us to start more Freedom Schools, but how would they be funded. After much prayer, God brought the Rainwater Foundation to us. He worked it all out for them along with a gift from the Baptist General Convention of Texas to fund Freedom Schools at Rising Star Baptist Church and Travis Avenue Baptist Church. The Fort Worth ISD had funds to continue the school at Trimble Tech High School.

Our God is amazing and concerned about our students. So this summer 150 students will receive 6 weeks of concentrated help with literacy, self-esteem and encouragement.

Please be in prayer as Program Directors and Servant Leaders are secured. Also, please pray that the students who need the most help will be able to attend so they can thrive.

Recommended Actions

Acciones Recomendadas

  • Concentrate in accumulating assets, not liabilities. Wealthy people acquire assets. Poor people and the middle class acquire liabilities thinking that they are assets. An asset is something that puts money in your pocket. A liability is something that takes money out of your pocket.
  • At least once every six months make a total review of your investments to make sure you have the adequate mix for your life circumstances.
  • Don't wait to start investing because the day you wait is a day lost to earn.
  • Look for trustworthy professionals that are specialists in investments. Your ability to contract high quality financial advisors is directly related with the propensity to accumulate wealth.
  • Observe the trends in the economy to be a step ahead when the next hot investment comes your way.
  • Limit the expenses of investments and maintenance of accounts.
  • Associate with people that are truly successful with a positive attitude.
  • Accumulate more and more assets while controlling liabilities and expenses, so you can afford the luxury of considering more speculative investments.
  • Discover the difference between your profession and your business (build and protect your assets column). (Ray Kroc-McDonalds)
(Ray Kroc-McDonalds)
  • To be financially secure, you need to take care of your own business. Your business rotates around your assets column, instead of your income column. Wealthy people concentrate on their assets column while the rest concentrate on their income tax return.
  • Provide a reward for yourself for having invested and developed a real asset.
  • Focus on opportunities, not obstacles. Look at the growth potential, not the loss potential. Think about rewards, not risks.
  • Be willing to accept a regular job in a business to learn more about that job with the idea of investing.
  • To sell is the name of the game for the wealthy. Promote yourself and the value you offer to the market.
  • Wealthy people think long term. They find a balance between their expenses to enjoy life today and the investments to ensure their financial situation in the future. To increase wealth, one must earn more or live with less.
  • To generate wealth, minimize your taxable income and maximize your non-taxable income (wealth appreciation/capital with no flow of funds).

  • Financial goals from "Extraordinary Wealth Gatherers" as well as "Sub Gatherers of Wealth"
    • To be wealthy before retirement
    • To increase their wealth
    • To become wealthy through capital valorization
    • To increase their capital by conserving the value of their assets at the same time.
  • Sell your intellect.  The forces of the market may take away your business, but no one can take away your intellect.
  • Remember:  The greater your bank of financial resources, the greater your potential to give to God's Kingdom work.  Fortunate indeed is the man who honors God with all his resources.

re:FOCUS Journey
Does it feel like you are just going through the motions? Keeping all the different plates spinning and trying to keep people happy is exhausting for you. It is time to refocus! Come join what 150 other pastors and leaders have discovered has been a pivotal experience in their ministry. re:FOCUS is not just any leadership conference. It is a life changing experience that allows you to focus in on God and His plans for your life, while you build lasting relationships with pastors and other leaders you can trust.

Make your plans now. The next date is April 8-12, 2013. Yes, it is a week. We have found for pastors to truly let the pressures of life go and hear God clearly speak to them, it takes time. This is a two year journey. It isn't a quick fix. You won't have a notebook that will sit on your shelf and an experience that quickly fades from your memory. This process requires commitment and time on your part. It includes four week-long retreats (two a year - April and October), monthly peer group meetings and a book to read each six months. You will approach your relationship and dependency on God differently. You will approach your family differently. You will lead your church and ministry differently. Come join the journey!

How do you join and sign up?
1.  Send an email to Becky Biser at [email protected] to let her know that you are interested. She will send you a short form to complete.
2. Block your calendar and commit to April 8-12, 2013, October 7-11, 2014, April 7-11, 2014, and October 6-10, 2014.
3. Scholarships are available to assist you. The cost per retreat week is $250 which includes lodging, meals, snacks, books and materials. Don't let the cost deter you from coming. We will work with you.
