Thank you to all the supporters of our Annie B's fundraising effort!  Our garden program is going to be awesome.  Stay tuned for the total we earned, as well as garden updates!

New basketball nets were donated by Maddox and Kort Wilson and Family. These are used every day. Thank you!

Thanks to Trader Joes who donated paperbags to make art portfolios for our students and the awesome art they produce.  Have you seen the 2nd grade owls in the office?

New Immunization Law

California recently passed a new law eliminating the personal belief and religious exemption waiving immunizations that are required for school.

If you have a child currently enrolled in CCDS and you have an immunization waiver on file, it will be honored until the student reaches 7th grade. In accordance with state law, upon entry to 7th grade, all immunization requirements will need to be fulfilled in order to remain enrolled.

Also, if you have a child who will be entering school for the first time next fall (K-8), there will not be an option to waive any immunizations other than for medical reasons as stated by a physician.

Timely immunizations are a safe and effective method for preventing transmittable disease and keeping children safe and healthy.

If you would like more information about the new law or vaccine safety please go to the  shotsforschool.org website.

Peer Projects
7th and 3rd Grade

Third graders got together with their 7th grade project peers to learn an innovative note-taking method involving cartooning.  It was a great success!  The 7th graders taught the 3rd graders how to do sketch notes, which takes concepts ( in this case force & motion) and applies pictures to represent those concepts. Sketch notes are powerful for note-taking skills and can help students understand and process information through images.
AWESOME!
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear CCDS Families,

We are off to a fantastic start of the school year. As usual, there are many wonderful things going on at school to share with you. A concerted effort is afoot to keep things posted on Facebook, Twitter, as well as our website and newsletter.  Look for updates on project-based learning, events that happen in classrooms, and highlights that may pop up everyday.

The Lifeskills are highlighted each week at flag salute. Miss Suzanne, Mr. Garrett and Mrs. Fischer feature one Lifeskill per week at flag salute and share quotes, readings and videos with the students. Click here and scroll to the bottom of the page to see the list of Lifeskills for CCDS.

Chico Country Day School is participating in the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation process this year. CCDS has been WASC accredited for several years, and this year, we begin a new self-study cycle. This is an opportunity for our school to improve through self-evaluation, create student goals for improvement, and assure that we are always striving to reach our common objectives.  The WASC accreditation validates the integrity of our program.

You should have received test scores from California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). These are the tests 3rd-8th graders took last spring. This was the first year this type of rigorous, computer-adaptive testing was used, so the scores you received are considered baseline scores. Please realize that test scores are just one part of the big picture of your child's progress.  Here are a few links to help understand the CAASPP testing:  Parent Guide grade 3-5 and Parent Guide grade 6-8.

We have reviewed our safety protocols at the start of this new school year and run through drills and procedures with the students.  In addition, on October 15, we will participate in the Great California ShakeOut, an earthquake and preparedness activity sponsored by the Earthquake Country Alliance.

Go, Embrace. Challenge.

CCDS to Host Upcoming SAFETY MEETING

CCDS will host a community safety meeting on October 22 at 3:30 p.m. in the Middle School Common Area.

The Chico Chamber of Commerce and Team Chico have partnered with the Chico Police Department to work with businesses in various areas of Chico to improve communication between local businesses, property owners, and the Chico PD. The Park Avenue Corridor.

Businesses, property owners, and community members, including CCDS families are welcome and encouraged to attend these free Safety Meetings. Chief of Police for the City of Chico, Mike O'Brien, states, "The Chico Police Department values partnerships with our community. These Safety Meetings are an important way for citizens to connect with their police department, and the police department to connect with their community. This citizen interaction is critical in furthering the community policing model we have adopted, and we welcome these types of events for that reason."

Please join us!  For more information, please click here

All-School Sing Rocked the House...

with a patriotic performance from the 5th grade performing the Preamble, followed by the 8th grade performing the Declaration of Independence. The Concert Choir set the tone singing the National Anthem.  Of course All-School Sing would not be the same without a color song from our sweet little kindergarteners.  Guess what color they sang about?

Accreditation Team Visit Set for April

The Accrediting Commission for Schools (ACS), Western Association of Schools and Colleges(WASC) will be sending a visiting team to Chico Country Day School in April to evaluate the school's progress toward improving learning opportunities for students. The six-year WASC cycle guides schools through an ongoing improvement process that includes implementation, assessment,
and refinement of the schoolwide action plan on an annual basis. The last full visit to CCDS by WASC was in 2010.

In 2013, CCDS received top marks following a mid-term evaluation by WASC. Since then, focus groups have been established to address key schoolwide criteria in preparation for the 2016 visit.  Our WASC Leadership Team is looking for greater participation from parents and community stakeholders.

What's involved?
Participation can include joining a focus group or gathering evidence to demonstrate progress in a particular area. Proof readers and/or editors are also needed as the individual group reports come together to form the larger, comprehensive report to WASC. The final report is due in March.

Want to learn more?
Representatives of the CCDS WASC Leadership Team will present a status
report to board members and the public at the Oct. 14 board meeting. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the Middle School. Come see how WASC works and how our school is preparing for its spring accreditation review.

For more information about how you can get involved, email WASC School Coordinator, John Garrett, or call the office at (530)895-2650.

WHAT IS COURAGE?
To act according to one's beliefs despite fear of consequences.

WHY PRACTICE COURAGE?
Character development is impossible without the life skill of courage, because it is not easy to do the right thing.  If it were, the world would be a much kinder and gentler place.   We have to show courage in order to act upon what we know to be right, even when others around us are not.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO ENCOURAGE THE LIFE SKILL OF COURAGE AT HOME?
  • Share stories of family members' acts of courage.
  • Encourage family members to venture out and try new activities.
  • Nurture each other's interests and endeavors.
  • Help one another accept feedback about their actions - both positive and negative.
WHAT ARE SOME BOOKS WE CAN READ TOGETHER ABOUT COURAGE?
The True Story of Ruby Bridgesby Robert Coles
Knots on a Counting Rope, by Bill Martin, Jr.
Stone Fox, by John Reynolds Gardiner

Fix-It Elective Teaches Important Skills

The "Fix It Elective" has been added this year to the many choices the Middle School students have for Friday electives.  Taught by Stuart Langford and Jeff Hall, students are currently learning how to take apart and fix bicycles and also how to mix concrete and make concrete molds.  Mr. Langford and Mr. Hall started the year with humorous British "safety" videos and illustrated that you CAN blow up a bike tire.  Safety first!

Early next month, Steve O'Bryan from Pullins Cyclery will be giving a hands-on lesson on bike tire repair.  Elective students will also be selling their concrete molds and purchasing new molds, as well as providing decorative art for our outdoor classroom areas on both campuses.

Media-Free Week
October 6-10
 "Let's Get Unplugged"

This year there was not enough help to plan a full week of activities, but we would still like to encourage all of the CCDS community to "get unplugged."  Media Free Week helps us think about the amount of time we spend in front of a screen. Let's spend this week working to eliminate or reduce the hours we spend in front of the TV, IPADS, computer, video games, etc.

A flyer will come home on Monday with ideas on how to meet this challenge. Participation is voluntary, but students and family members are encouraged to participate.  There will be a book swap on Friday, October 9, during lunch/recess. Please have your children bring books to their classroom for the exchange. "Let's Get Unplugged" together!
