PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
Thank you, Parents, for your continued volunteer work on campus. Your contributions are a valuable part of the school culture and a key piece to how we are able to provide so many unique opportunities for our students. Your service counts, so please keep track of your hours.
The PBIS Committee is continuing to foster a respectful, responsible, and safe community. Our goal is to acknowledge more students for demonstrating our behavior expectations. In addition to holding our regular drawings for a prize, we are adding a monthly opportunity for students to exchange their Eagle Eyes for a treat. A calendar of the treats offered each month with the required number of Eagle Eyes needed will be shared soon. In addition, students will also be able to use one or more of their Eagle Eyes toward our regular drawing for a prize.
This year we are continuing to use the "Bully-Proofing Your School" program to help foster a supportive environment for students. Teachers have been signing up to have our psychologist or intern work with their students on the curriculum. All K-8 teachers will continue to support the curriculum in their classrooms.
Beginning this year, schools are required to calculate chronic absenteeism. If a child is truant more than three full days in a school year, we must report it to the state. To read more about what is considered an excused/unexcused absence and our school policies, please click here.
Please remember that November is a time to focus on being thankful. This is a great opportunity to talk to your children about the importance of giving. I wish everyone safe travels during the holiday season.

Congratulations Miss Nye!
It's no surprise to CCDS that our very own Miss Nye, kindergarten teacher, butterfly lover, and friend to all was awarded Best Teacher in Chico by the Chico News and Review in its "Best of" edition. This was a big secret that only of a couple staff members knew and when the day finally arrived, they rushed down to the CN&R to pick up as many copies as they could. Back at school, Miss Neely announced the exciting news over the intercom- which was a great surprise to everyone, especially Miss Nye. Congratulations, Miss Nye - you made CCDS proud!

8th Grade Goes to Ashland
A few weeks ago, my 8th grade class got to go see two plays in Ashland for the Shakespeare festival. We saw A Comedy of Errors and A Wrinkle in Time. We also got to see prologues to these two plays, meet one of the actors and spend the night in Ashland. The whole experience was one-of-a-kind.
When we got to Ashland, we set up tents and got into nicer clothes then hustled off to see the prologue for our first show, A Wrinkle in Time. A Wrinkle in Time was a very good play. I loved how the characters were portrayed. My favorite scene was when Charles Wallace is explaining tessering to Meg. It would be amazing to actually be able to tesser. Tessering is explained as when you use the 6th dimension as a bridge between the 5th and 4th dimension. I loved this play and would recommend it to anyone who loves science fiction.
Between A Wrinkle in Time and the prologue for A Comedy of Errors, we had some time to have dinner and experience downtown Ashland. It was fun to have some less-structured time to go and see the area and have a yummy meal.
Our next play, A Comedy of Errors was hilarious! The play is about two sets of long-lost twins, so the actors were changing clothes and running back and forth to play the different characters. There were tons of puns and slapstick comedy. I would definitely recommend this play to anyone who likes a laugh.
These plays have given me an interest in Shakespeare. I have been inspired to step outside my comfort zone reading and I am starting to read his plays. So far I have read, A Comedy of Errors, Taming of the Shrew, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. I loved watching these plays and I know if you go to see them, you will too.
Sincerely yours,
Maeve Lawson

Annual Food Drive Begins November 5
Dear CCDS Families,
The spirit of Thanksgiving is all about showing gratitude for good fortune and giving to those who are less fortunate. CCDS is showing GRIT this November by giving back to our community with our annual food for the Jesus Center.
Please send in donations of canned/non-perishable food items with your students. Food will be collected in each classroom and will be picked up by our middle school leadership students. There will be a friendly competition between grade levels to see which grade can donate the most food.
Thank you for your help,
Middle School Leadership Class

We all have a ChicoBag or two. They're a Chico thing. Not only are they compact, but also a very handy, reusable bag. Put one in the car and your purse or backpack! They are great for traveling too. This bag makes a perfect stocking stuffer, or little Chico gift for someone who lives far away.
We are selling ChicoBags this year in addition to our coffee sale. Look for a brochure and order form coming home soon. We will receive 40% of all proceeds and each participant who raises $30 will receive a free race pack.

SMITHSONIAN COMES TO CCDS
CCDS was one of two schools in all of the USA to have the Smithsonian Institute visit and seek student and teacher opinions of a new educational research website. Two researchers from the Smithsonian and a camera crew visited October 8 in the 6th grade to launch their prototype website that will allow students to discover over a million resources from all 19 Smithsonian museums. The camera crew interviewed the teachers and students to get their reactions to this incredible on-line resource. The promotional documentary will be used across the country to introduce the resource to other educational institutes. A local business, Navigation, is working with the Smithsonian to get this website up and running by the fall.

 HELLO FROM PTP
A great big GRITTY thank you to the Harvest Fair team! It was a huge success thanks to the leadership of Dave Mortenson and his team of parent volunteers. With the help of classroom parents, the committee overcame several obstacles and pulled off a great community event. The fair netted approximately $4000!
We're gearing up for a busy month starting with Family Night at Burger Hut on Tuesday. This year it is at both locations, East Lassen and Forest Avenue. We receive 20% of the proceeds! Take the night off and stop by have dinner next Tuesday at the location closest to you. A coupon will be coming home at the beginning of the week. We also have coffee and ChicoBag sales starting soon. Do some Christmas shopping and support local businesses while earning money for CCDS.
Please adjust your school calendars. We are moving the Scholastic Book Fair to the last week in January. It is currently scheduled in December, but there's no place to have it. Luckily we will have a finished gym soon!
Both order forms will be coming home soon. Do some Christmas shopping, support local businesses and earn money for CCDS!

Eagles Sports Update
Cross Country
Congratulations to this year's cross country team which led the league this year with the most runners. This was our third season of cross country and our biggest team yet with 20 runners! The blue and white finished the season this past Wednesday at Hooker Oak Park with the top 5 finishers coming from CCDS! A huge thank-you goes out to coaches Cory Trento and Trent Harris!
Volleyball
The volleyball teams finished their seasons in mid-October. Highlights of the season included the 8th grade team taking second place at the Willows Tournament, narrowly getting edged out in the last game. There was tremendous growth shown by all players throughout the season. The girls were so lucky again to have coaches Pete Pembroke and Katherine Chapin leading the way! Thank you coaches for all of your time and dedication.
Girls Basketball
Girls basketball has just gotten underway. The Lady Eagles have gotten off to a great start with the 8th grade team winning the Durham Tournament this past weekend! Coaches Chris Nixon and Jordan Williams are at it again developing our student athletes into awesome players. The 7th grade team (all 6th graders!) bounced back with wins against Orland and the Marsh B team, to even their season record at 2-2. The 8th graders are now 4-1 on the season. We are very proud of the effort of both CCDS teams and how well they represent CCDS.
Boys Basketball
Boys basketball is right around the corner. There are three upcoming dates to be aware of:
November 24 - Open Gym, Pleasant Valley Baptist Gym 6-7:30.
December 1 - Tryout at Pleasant Valley Baptist Gym 6-8p.m.
December 3 - Tryout at Boys and Girls Club Gym
628 Wall Street from 7-8:30p.m.

*Please note that all CCDS athletic activities are posted in calendar form on the CCDS website here.
