A Message from Our Principal

Dear Parents,

The auction was a success thanks to Dawn Winter and the auction committee who did a fabulous job orchestrating this grand event. I'd also like to thank parents who assisted with projects/donations, the community who donated in support of our school, students and staff, and everyone who purchased something at the auction.  Last I'd like to thank Annabelle Trento, our student council president, who spoke on behalf of our students explaining the positive impact the auction makes on everyone at CCDS. The funds earned will continue to support our field trips; our programs in music, art, library, and gardening; as well as help increase implementation of technology.

Parents, I need your help with a growing concern on campus. Students are bringing personal items to school which unfortunately is becoming a distraction on campus, in class, and in the after school program (ASP). Please remind your child not to bring personal items that are not part of their instructional day. We have all the tools, play equipment, and additional materials needed for our students. If there is a special project or activity in ASP, the classroom teacher will send a written notice to parents requesting the specific item.

We just received notice that the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) visit is going to be held on May 13. Soon we will be posting to the CCDS website a rough draft of the midterm progress report for community-wide review and comments. Your critical review of this document is appreciated and will help us put our best foot forward when the WASC Team visits. Upcoming E-Flyers and newsletters will give you more information about WASC, details about the visit to CCDS, and our soon-to-be released mid-term report on the CCDS website. See more below on why WASC accreditation is important for CCDS. If you have questions, contact Ann Nikolai, parent volunteer and member of our WASC leadership team at
(530) 898-5858.

Thank you for your continued support!

CCDS Garden Receives Mini-Grant

We're excited!  Ms. Gina received $100 from the Chico Horticultural Society. The money will be used to plant a Native California Garden. Adrienne Edwards, a parent and great supporter of our garden program, is an expert in Native California plants and will be helping

with this project.  She has been a guiding force along with the Chico Horticultural Society, which has funded our garden project for the last four years and been a great community partner while "growing" our program.  Congratulations Ms. Gina and thank you to Adrienne and the Chico Horticultural Society!

Safety Committee Update

Safety Committee met for its monthly meeting and here is a summary of what was discussed:

  • Margaret and Bonnie are looking into a program for our school that does automated texts and phone messages. Middle school is piloting a cell phone use policy during code reds. The kids enter a specific text to their parents that is verified by the teachers.
  • We ran a practice code red for our elective teachers the last week in February so that subs and elective teachers have a good sense of how to respond during an emergency.
  •  Fences seem to be working well. The gates have taken some adjustment, but overall things have generally been positive and folks are adjusting. Furthermore, the gates have stopped the homeless from setting up camp on the weekends and nights.
  • Parking has improved, but please remember that there should be no drop-off in the parking lot. Kindergarten parents are the only exception to this rule.  Please park legally while dropping and picking kids up from school.
Next meeting is April 15.

Art at CCDS

As always, students have been busy creating amazing art. We've got owls, turtles, water fowl for the  National Duck Stamp Art Contest,  missions, and tall ships!   Art displays are continually changing in the office and library so please take time to check out the work of our talented students.

The Original Works Fundraiser is almost here!  Kindergarten through 5th Grade participate in this cool art fundraiser.

This is your chance to have your child's artwork on a selection of products. Warning:  It's pretty special  seeing your child's creation on your coffee mug in the morning!  It may become your most cherished possession. See the link below for a list of details and products you can order.

Look for completed artwork and a catalog coming home on March 25.  Orders are due on April 2 and delivered back to you just in time for Mother's Day.  But don't forget Father's Day, grandma and grandpa's birthday and even Christmas!

WASC Report Update

Teachers, parents and administration are busy working on the WASC midterm report in preparation for a visit from the WASC team on May 13.  WASC is recognized as one of six regional associations that accredit public and private schools in the United States. Two representatives will spend the day visiting classrooms, meeting teachers, students and staff to evaluate the progress CCDS has made since the

last accreditation visit in 2009-10. Accreditation is a continual process of assessment, planning, implementing, monitoring, and reassessment. The process is guided and assisted by self-study, visit, and follow-up. This gives us the opportunity to share our progress, accomplishments, and future plans. We have posted all WASC documents on the CCDS website at

http://www.chicocountryday.org/CCDS-Info/WASC-Accreditation/index.html.

Why WASC Accreditation Important to CCDS?

  • Affirms to the public that our school is a trustworthy institution of learning
  • Validates the integrity of our school's program and student transcripts
  • Fosters improvement of our school's programs and operations to support student learning
  • Assures our school community that the school's purposes are appropriate and being accomplished through a viable educational program
  • Gives our school a way to manage change through regular assessment, planning, implementing, monitoring and reassessment
  • Assists our school in establishing its priority areas for improvement as a result of the perpetual accreditation cycle that includes
    • School self-assessment of the current educational program for students
    • Insight and perspective from the visiting committee
    • Regular school staff assessment of progress through the intervening years between full self-studies.

CCDS continues to strive for excellence. Not only is this report a checkpoint, it keeps us on our toes and always improving, streamlining and making our school the best it can be.

WILD Things are Happening at CCDS

Kindergarten is learning about things that keep us healthy. We are making a book about these things, reading many books, inviting special guests to teach about this topic, making a list of 100 healthy habits and much more. We will have a Healthy Habits Immersion Day to culminate our unit.

Mrs. Proctor's 2nd grade students participated in self-selected expert groups to do research and report to the class about famous historical American heroes. We read books and used the web resources to do research. Students planned and designed how they were going to present. We had skits, songs, various types of posters/props, and basic reporting about important facts and life skills demonstrated by those heroes.

Fourth grade is studying geology now. We were given a huge box of unidentified rocks/minerals that our students will have to learn to identify and label for future use. Geologists visited our classes to evaluate our accuracy.

February was a big month for 5th grade because of their annual Age of Sail field trip!  The overnight trip took place on the Balcutha at the Hyde Street Pier in San Fransisco.  When asked what he learned on the trip, Deakon Trento said, "Sailors didn't have it easy.  I learned that we had to have teamwork and had to know the strength and weaknesses of the people around us."  When asked if he would do it again, Deakon thoughtfully said, "I'm not sure."

The 6th graders are performing their original musical, Dirt Angels, at Butte College main campus in their "Black Box" theater on Friday the 15th of March. We have two shows, a 9:30 and 10:30. We have several classes coming on field trips to see the production, but we want all CCDS families to know they are welcome to come on out and enjoy the show. There is no cost. But the memory will be priceless.

The beginning band and concert band will be participating in the California Educator's Association Music Festival on March 8 at CSU, Chico. Not only do they perform for a panel of judges, but they are given a rating based on their performance. Last year the beginning band received a "SUPERIOR" rating from judges!
