We hear countless leadership development workshops and seminars including things on the different leadership styles and what the difference is between a leader and a manager.  

 

In my work, I hear a lot of disgruntlement about boss's not being leaders and a feeling of helplessness and powerlessness to change their boss's interpersonal style. Well, you don't have to feel helpless because there are many ways you can influence your boss to have a better relationship. No, we can't change other people or their behavior but we can influence their behavior. It means stop griping, leaving the job, or wish they would be fired or just leave.  

 

It is really the novel concept of supporting your leader, adding value to the organization and distinguishing yourself from the rest of the pack by doing your work with excellence

Nine Ways to Lead Your Leader 

Your Boss: Your relationship with your boss is the most important thing for your job and career success. But how much do you really know about your boss? 

  • Do you understand your boss's unique communication style?
  • Do you know how to keep them in the loop so they don't need to micromanage?
  • Do you know why they reject proposals and how to anticipate their objections?
  • Do you know how to bring them exactly the information they need to succeed?

There are many types of bosses in organizations - There are the Horrific Boss Types: The Bully, The Constant Critic, The Parent, The Con Artist, The Geek, The Jerk, The Rule Changer, The Yeller, The Micro-manager, The Incompetent, The Spotlight Grabbers, The Lousy Communicators, The Saboteurs, The Lazy Bones, and The Under-miner.  

 

You may work for one of these types of Toxic Bosses, or a Clueless Boss or a Good Boss, or a Fabulous Boss. But what would be the benefits to you of having a better relationship with your boss?
