I hardly think that any organization is not going to be affected by organizational change over the next few months. While change is inevitable, the nature of change has changed. While change used to be infrequent, stability was the norm and organizations used to have time to prepare for and adjust to new situations.
The present climate of accelerated change has produced an atmosphere of uncertainty and instability. Former "safe and secure positions" like "government jobs," are now at the center of crisis in terms of change. We have developed euphemisms like up-sizing, rightsizing, downsizing, restructuring, mergers, and acquisitions but now we have our focus on lay-offs. How many of us have felt like screaming, "stop the world, I want to get off!"

Riding The Wave of Organizational Change
|

If you are ever interested in the change within one's constantly changing industry, we just have to look at the airline industry. It was reported that one day after the announcement of the purchase of US Airways by American Airlines, the intranet was full of constant concerns about the personal impact on employees' lives. The Vice-President of Customer Service was quoted as saying that "people should stop worrying about what is going to happen 3, 4, or 5 years down the line." He joked that his own job might not exist. It is no joking matter to the employees who are worried about their benefits and if they will be forced to move or close down because the two airlines have centers near each other.
It is true that all organizations go through change and it may be a positive or negative experience. In fact, your resilience to change is enhanced by your past successful experiences with change. While we may dislike change because of many factors such as fear of the unknown, inadequate information, perceived losses, lack of control and perceived risks, there may be positives that may help us welcome organizational change. These can be getting rid of a bad boss, greater variety with new responsibilities, expanded opportunities, improved results and personal growth. Read more...
