Tennenbaum Tech is one of seven Alliance schools that utilize that BLAST model, which integrates technology into the classroom making learning more relevant, personalized, and dynamic.

"Before coming to Tennenbaum Tech I thought that school was boring and I didn't try very hard," said student Jeremy Melendez. He added that, "this school has given me the maturity, independence, and leadership skills to succeed."

Zimmer Resolution to Stop Charter School Growth - Alliance Students Need Your Help!

Los Angeles Unified School Board Member Steve Zimmer proposed a resolution to the School Board that will place a moratorium on granting new charter school petitions in Los Angeles for the next several years.

Over the past month, thousands of charter school supporters have made phone calls and packed the room at LAUSD board meetings to show their opposition to the Zimmer Resolution. Our phone calls and parent support paid off, and Zimmer pulled the resolution from the September board meeting for revision.

On November 13th the revised Zimmer resolution will be brought to a vote.

Please continue to call your school board member to register your opposition to the Zimmer Resolution! You can find your LAUSD Board Representative and their contact information by going to www.laschoolboard.org.

Suggested Message to Your LAUSD Board Representative:

I oppose LAUSD Board Member Steve Zimmer's resolution to limit parent and student choice.   Every charter petition should be evaluated on its own merits and, as an elected official, I hope that you will be responsive to parents and students in the communities you serve who are demanding a wide variety of high-quality education options.

Alliance Schools Move to New Facilities

New building shared by Alliance College-Ready Middle Academy 5 and

Alliance Susan and Eric Smidt Technology High School in Lincoln Heights

This October, three Alliance schools moved into new, permanent facilities!

Alliance Susan and Eric Smidt Technology High School and Alliance College-Ready Middle Academy 5 moved to a new building in Lincoln Heights.  Smidt Tech is a new Alliance school which opened this fall, CRMA 5 was previously leasing a temporary space.

Smidt Tech and CRMA 5 both implement the BLAST model at their schools.  Their new school building is equipped with large classrooms to accommodate the rotational model used with BLAST.

Alliance College-Ready Academy High School 5 moved to a new building in South Los Angeles.  Prior to moving to the new space, CRAHS 5 students were spread across three separate school buildings.

"After five years in the old space it is very exciting to move to a permanent facility," says CRAHS 5 Principal Dean Marolla.  He adds that, "we have a very collaborative culture at CRAHS 5, and finally having all four grades in one building will help to make that culture even stronger."

Alliance Jack H. Skirball Middle School Students Receive New Computers

This year, three Alliance middle schools are piloting the BLAST program with sixth grade students. Every BLAST student receives a laptop computer that they can use throughout the school day.   Computers for Youth (CFY) has donated desktop computers to sixth grade families at Alliance Jack H. Skirball Middle School so that students and their parents can also access their online learning tools at home.

Skirball parents and students learn to use their new computers

Skirball sixth graders and their parents arrived early in the morning on Saturday October 6th for their first computer learning session with CFY. They started the day by unpacking and connecting their newly refurbished desktop computers.

CFY staff and volunteers led the 4-hour long learning sessions, which taught parents and students how to use their new computers, and how to navigate the online educational software used at BLAST schools.

Each year the new class of incoming BLAST 6th graders at Skirball will receive a home computer and take part in the computer learning class. Ultimately every Skirball family will have a computer for learning at home.

"We are very excited about the CFY program and eager to see its impact on Skirball families," said Alliance President and CEO Judy Burton. Adding that, "hopefully next year we can expand the program to other Alliance middle schools."

Please Vote on November 6th

On November 6th we head to the polls for this year's presidential election.

For California voters, this election is also an opportunity to vote on several important propositions that affect the future of our public schools.  We hope that you will take the time to research these propositions and vote on November 6th.  Make your voice heard in an election year that will have a significant impact on the direction of public education in our state and our country.

Remember, the easiest and most effective way to support great schools is to vote!

Alumni Spotlight - Kevin Olivares
Alliance Marc & Eva Stern Math and Science High School, Class of 2012
Yale University, Class of 2016

My name is Kevin Olivares. I recently graduated from Alliance Marc and Eva Stern Math and Science High School.  Graduating high school was a major accomplishment, and I am proud to say that I am one of the first members of my family to attend college.  I am currently in my first semester at Yale University as a Charles S. Guggenheimer and Gates Millennium Scholar.

Currently, my goal is to graduate from Yale with a B.S. in Applied Mathematics or Mechanical Engineering.  As a Gates Millennium Scholar, I will have additional funds to pursue graduate studies in Mathematics, Science, or Engineering through the doctoral level.  I plan on participating in a Ph.D. or Sc.D. program.

I did not accomplish any of this alone. I am deeply grateful for having passionate teachers during high school that not only taught me academic subjects, but also taught the importance of fighting to achieve your goals.  Above everything else, I learned that nothing is free.  To accomplish goals means to struggle.

The Alliance provides extensive resources for its students.  They helped me achieve my goals by enriching my high school experience with teachers that are extraordinary in different dimensions beyond academics.
