June 28, 2014

Summer is here! This can be a time of wonderful rest and relaxation and it can also be a time when families struggle to provide the structure some kids crave. Luckily we live in an area where there is much to keep us busy.

Last weekend we hosted northwest area families at Lime Rock Park for a fabulous day at the races. It was our sixth year and we were blessed with wonderful weather.  If you have not been there, it is definitely a fun family-friendly place to visit.

If your family qualifies, please consider participating in the adoption study we posted at the bottom of this newsletter.

Summer can be a time to catch up on reading. Check out our lending library at Annie C. Courtney Foundation offices. There are some wonderful titles there for adults as well as children and youth.

We hope you all enjoy your Fourth of July!

Star of the Month
Star of the Month
Each month one of our member agencies feature a "star" whose service to children in foster care deserves special recognition.

Stars receive a small gift from FAM and a certificate of appreciation from the nominating agency.  This month, we share a family from our partner, Community Residences, Inc.

Community Residences, Incorporated (CRI) is pleased to honor Angella Bentley in recognition of her 14 years as a therapeutic foster parent.  Angella was born in Jamaica and moved to the United States in 1981 to be closer to her mother, Adessa.   Adessa now lives with her in her home, along with her 18 year old daughter, Brianna. Angella had always taken care of children and had a special place in her heart for those who she could offer help. She became officially licensed to provide therapeutic care with CRI in 2000. In 2013, Angella was asked to come to the Family & Community Ties (FCT) program to provide an even higher level of care to children in need of more support. Angella happily accepted this challenge and has been an incredible asset to the FCT team! One of the first children from FCT to be placed in her home was an emergency respite for an 11 year old boy who had a hard time trusting and feeling loved. Angella was able to provide a warm, supportive, and welcoming home to him and in just a few weeks, he expressed that he never wanted to leave!

Angella is a strong parent who knows how to make children feel safe and heard while providing good boundaries, but also does a great job of picking her battles. She has a great amount of compassion for the ch  ildren who come into her home, as well as their families. Angella has always been a supporter of children maintaining relationships with their birth families, when appropriate, and works to help facilitate these connections as best she can. Angella takes on challenges with a perseverance and patience that is evident in the successes that she has had with so many children in her home over the years. She has endured challenges with youth displaying high risk and unsettling behaviors with confidence.   Angella is a highly committed and dedicated parent who is a strong advocate and safe haven for the children in her care.

In addition to doing so well with the children in her home, Angella is a delight to work with. She is a team player who has a way of making anyone who steps through the door feel like family.

CRI would like to thank Angella Bentley, and her entire family, for their continuous dedication and support to CRI! It is a pleasure to nominate Angella as the Foster Adoptive Mission's Star of the Month recipient.

Words of Wisdom

babbling-brook-sm.jpg

To laugh often and much;

to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;

to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends;

to appreciate beauty;

to find the best in others;

to leave the world a bit better by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;

to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.

This is to have succeeded.

How to Really Love a Child

Study Participants Needed
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BIRTH (NON-ADOPTED) AND ADOPTED SIBLING RELATIONSHIPS???

I am a student at the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work conducting a study to better understand how the relationship between adopted and birth (non-adopted) siblings growing up in the same adoptive home evolves from childhood through adulthood. Specifically, I am seeking assistance in locating in-race, adult birth (non-adopted)/ adopted sibling pairs in which the adopted person came into the adoptive family under 2 years of age and the non-adopted (birth) sibling was no more than 5 years at the time the adoption occurred. Ideally, the siblings are now adults between 20 and 40 years of age. I am interested in the possibility of interviewing both the adopted and non-adopted siblings and their parents. Interviews will be either face to face or over the phone and will probably take between one and two hours.

A 20 dollar Target gift card will be provided to each participant at the end of the interview as a recognition of the time and energy you spent volunteering for this study. If you are interested or know any adult sibling pairs of adopted and not-adopted persons, please contact me for more information about the study. Thank you in advance for your support and interest.
