Running through water
Welcome! Does your health literacy journey ever feel like you are running through a row of sprinklers? At the beginning, maybe you're not sure if you really want to do this. In the middle, you have to figure out how fast or slow to go. By the end, will you be glad that you took on this challenge?

Running through sprinklers seems like a fitting metaphor for the challenges we face as health literacy advocates. My hope is that you find this journey as meaningful as its outcome. Thanks to
my niece's son for showing us how.

As you requested, here's What's New in Health Literacy Consulting.
HLC How-To
April's How-To Tip: Making Numbers Make Sense. Health information is filled with numbers. This includes concepts such as quantity, time, and risk. But patients, caregivers, and the lay public often struggle to understand and use such numbers. This month's HLC How-To Tip includes 12 +1 strategies to help make numbers make sense.

Mary Gynn, RN is April's Health Literacy Hero. Mary emailed me about how she is working to make health information more understandable. Here's just part of her story.

After many years working in hospitals, Mary realized that patients do not always understand what clinicians are saying. So Mary decided to take action, starting with earning an MPH degree in worldwide public and community health. Since then, Mary's health literacy efforts have included introducing nursing colleagues to health literacy, leading community health programs for the public, writing about health literacy for professional and peer-reviewed publications, and working with others to plan a statewide health literacy conference. Thanks Mary, you indeed are a Health Literacy Hero! Learn more about Mary Gynn's work at http://www.teachingforhealth.com

HL News & Resources
Helen's resources edited. Red.

Sometimes a dose of whimsy and creativity can help make a serious health message easier to understand. Here is a terrific video about bedbugs that does just that, "Keep the Bite Out of the Night." There also are versions in Jarai, Korean, and Spanish. Thanks to the Wake County Human Services Communicable Disease Program for letting me share this video with you.

Health literacy matters to college students and librarians, too. Lana W. Jackman authored this 2013 article, "Health Literacy: A National Responsibility--Our Brother's Keeper" published in College & Undergraduate Libraries, 20:1, 95-106. Thanks for including me in this article.
Thanks for subscribing to What's New in Health Literacy Consulting. Please forward this newsletter to all who care about understandable health communication. And encourage them to subscribe, just like you.

Enjoy your health literacy journey!
Until May, ~Helen
