HLHero 2
"Be a Health Literacy Hero." This is a theme I propose for October's Health Literacy Month. I intend this as an engaging, inclusive, appealing, and meaningful way to encourage action and acknowledge those making a difference in how we communicate about health.

You are welcome (but certainly not required) to use this theme and Health Literacy Hero image in your efforts. For instance, you could:
  • Honor those you consider as Health Literacy Heroes. You might do this every week, month, or just in October. I plan to do the same by highlighting some I consider as heroes in this e-newsletter and on the Health Literacy Month website. My choices are meant as examples of how people can, and do, make a health literacy difference.
  • Use this theme to encourage action. My graphic designer created a postcard with the Health Literacy Hero image on the front and a call to action on the back. I am getting this printed and plan to distribute it at conferences. You are welcome to do the same. Email me for a free PDF of this postcard.
How else do you suggest we raise awareness and encourage action? Thanks for wanting to know what's new in Health Literacy Consulting.
HLC How-To
How Adults Learn. While not always labeled education, all provider-patient encounters are opportunities for learning and teaching. Based on the Adult Learning Theory developed many years ago by Malcolm Knowles, this month's Health Literacy Consulting How-To Tip looks at key points of this theory along with my interpretation about how they apply to health communication.

Gloria Mayer and Michael Villaire of IHA (Institute for Healthcare Advancement) are Health Literacy Heroes to me.

For a dozen years, Gloria Mayer (IHA President/CEO), Michael Villaire (IHA Chief Operating Officer), and others at IHA have organized, led, and made possible IHA's annual health literacy conference. To me, this conference offers a hub of learning for newcomers, long-time practitioners, researchers, and health care leaders. It also provides a gathering place for health literacy advocates worldwide. Thank you, Gloria and Michael -- for all you have done, and continue to do, when it comes to health literacy.

Who is your Health Literacy Hero? Please email suggestions about individuals, teams, or organizations to honor in this newsletter.
