Mark your calendars! I wanted to be sure you put the 2014 Children's Summit on your calendars now. The 2014 Children's Summit will be held on February 28th, 2014. We are grateful that Microsoft will be providing the venue for the Children's Summit. Our theme is "We are all in this together".
The keynote speaker is Stephen Black, the grandson of Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black and the founder and president of Impact Alabama. Mr. Black has led some innovative work in Alabama, utilizing students from the University of Alabama, where he directs the Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility, to improve health and education results for Alabama's children and youth. Participants at the Children's Summit will also have the opportunity to attend workshops on a variety of topics including social emotional learning and the Common Core, the legislative landscape for children in California, linking your programmatic outcomes to community results, and other interesting subjects.

YTF is an appointed body of 15 high-school aged youth who serve as an advisory body to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. Junior Achievement prepares youth for economic success through a short series of age-appropriate lessons on entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and work readiness. You can volunteer to work in schools to teach these lessons (the teacher will still be in the classroom to provide support).

In The News
Kaiser Permanente, along with other funders and partners, kicked off the local effort to support State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson's Team California for Healthy Kids initiative. The initiative brings together schools and community support to increase physical activity in students and ensure they have access to fresh water and fresh food, through avenues such as salad bars. The initiative also supports First Lady Michelle Obama's, "Let's Move Salad Bars Schools" campaign, that seeks to increase children's fruit and vegetable consumption through placing salad bars in schools. |

Food for Families - For the Holidays and Year-Round Food is available to low-income families through a network of partners who get food from Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. During the holidays, families can sign up for special holiday food baskets or be referred to holiday hot meals. Food programs such as Family Harvest, Produce Mobile, Pantries and Senior Brown Bag have space to add new participants.
Dates: Ongoing. Food distributions and meal programs are available weekdays and on weekends.

PARENT PROJECT.
The Parent Project is a 12 week program which offers classes through the Santa Clara County. The program is specifically designed for parents with difficult or out-of-control adolescents. Parents learn specific prevention and intervention strategies for destructive behaviors.
Silicon Valley Kids Climate Club.
This club offers children - and grownups - important lessons about conserving energy and water, recycling trash and finding new food sources. Supervisor Dave Cortese started the Climate Kids Club to introduce children in grades 3 through 12 to simple tips they can use to help protect the environment.
