The wheel of the year has turned again, at last! The long winter has afforded me many opportunities for brisk, solitary walks along the Hackensack River to clear my mind and perhaps photograph a glorious bird, from the common sparrow to the more exotic Great Blue Heron... 

What's so special about taking pictures of birds? It's an interest that has evolved whereby I can practice attaining stillness of mind (walking meditation) while keeping my senses alert to pick up on a sound or movement... Using a simple Canon PowerShot SX170 IS allows me a simple setting and all I need is to "point and shoot." As they say, "the joy is in the journey." For those of you have are inclined to hear from me more often, feel free to "follow" me via my VibrantVerena Blog...

I spotted this adorable bird dancing on the snow as I was driving on a side street... I stopped and got this shot in a few minutes' time, without leaving my car!

I had to be really quick to capture this small beauty... Well worth it when I saw the yellow dandelions and the little bit of yellow on this sparrow's eyelid area. Hurrah!

I spotted this Blue Jay while walking through a trail behind the main park at Van Saun Park in Paramus... I had lots of time to circle around this very verbal blue jay!

Another shot taken from my car window... this one was taken right as I had parked at home... on our neighbor's doorstep... What a gift!
Birders Without Borders 
Bald Eagle, Peerskills, NY, USA
My daughter and I spent the day with a group from the Tenafly Nature Center and Flatrock Nature Center and went to four different locations around the Hudson River to spot the wintering bald eagles.... Our group counted 94 EAGLES!!! Unbelievable.... The younger eagles are darker overall and take 4 years to get their white head and tail feathers... What a day, what vistas! The eagles like to hang out on the ice floes... very interesting. Some of the dreamy scenes reminded me of the romantic art by Caspar David Friedrich, 1774-1840, a painter from the Hudson River School and a New England Luminist. God is Good! Who knew that a Mourning Dove could have so many colors? I saw this one dove sitting on the wire outside my kitchen window with the white winter skies behind...

The other dove, I spotted twice, sitting on a nest (a first for me to see!), a few feet away from the walking path. What a delight!

Verena is absolutely loving the independent music scene that is bringing really great talent such as Ari Hest to northern NJ. He is currently on tour with Suzanne Vega. He'll be performing with Dan Bern on June 22nd at the Outpost in the Burbs in Montclair, NJ.
