A Record $13 Billion Vote for Land and Water

Voters across America approved a record $13 billion for land conservation on Election Day, led by historic constitutional amendments in New Jersey and Florida.
The Conservation Campaign sponsored eight winning ballot measures generating $3.7 billion in conservation funding, including the New Jersey amendment, a water bond in California with significant funds for land conservation, and local measures in Bernalillo County, NM, Portland, OR, and New Bedford, MA. We were also a major supporter of the Florida amendment. Here are some election highlights:
Statewide victories

New Jersey: Voters approved the first-ever permanent funding of the state's programs for open space, farmland, and historic preservation by a 65 percent vote. Read more.

Florida:
The largest state conservation funding ballot measure ever will dedicate an estimated $18 billion over the next 20 years to conserving, managing, and restoring land and water. Nearly a million voters signed petitions to get this measure on the ballot. It had broad bipartisan support and passed with 75 percent of the vote. Read more.

California:  By 67-33%, voters passed a $7.5 billion water bond that includes $1.5 billion for land conservation. It is the first new state funding dedicated to land conservation since 2006.

County and city measures

New Bedford, MA. This historic seaport city, the sixth largest in the state, voted overwhelmingly to adopt the Community Preservation Act (CPA) to generate local dedicated funding and a state match for land conservation, recreation, historic preservation and affordable housing. Two other Massachusetts communities also passed CPA. Read more.

Bernalillo County, NM. By over 70 percent, voters in this county, which includes Albuquerque, approved a 15-year property tax for open space and natural areas.

Portland, OR. A Parks Replacement Bond providing $68 million to fix and maintain the city's parks won by 72 to 28%.
