Happy 4th of July
Fireworks all weekend to celebrate independence and express our patriotism . As you all know , my husband , father, five brothers and countless uncles and nephews and cousins have been military men. I am humbled and proud of them all, but I think of ALL the young men...of all nations... who have gone to war for their country under a flag they believed in. I suggest a poem that is about seven stanzas long . The poem is entitled THE CONQUERED BANNER by Abram Joseph Ryan. I give you the first stanza..(as a note the word "furl" means to gather into a compact roll and bind securely.)



"Furl that Banner, for 'tis weary;

Round its staff "tis drooping dreary;

Furl it, fold it, it is best:

For there's not a man to wave it,

And there's not a sword to save it,

For there's no one left to lave it

In the blood which heroes gave it;

And its foes now scorn and brave it;

Furl it, hide it_let it rest"
