Bill Smith, The Greatest Swimmer of His Era, Passes Away
Honolulu - Bill Smith, the 1948 London Olympic Games gold medalist in the 400-meter freestyle and 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay has passed away. He was generally considered the World's outstanding swimmer from 1941 to 1949. Smith's greatest years were during the WWII years. After watching him shatter world records in the 200, 400 and 800 meter freestyle events at the 1942 US Nationals, three Hall of Fame coaches, Ohio State's Mike Peppe, Michigan's Matt Mann and Yale's Bob Kiphuth were unanimous in declaring the 19 year old Hawaiian "the greatest swimmer who ever lived." Jason Lezak's 2008 4x100m Freestyle Relay Suit
We will always remember Jason Lezak's legendary performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, when he anchored the 4x100m freestyle relay to not only break the world record and win the gold for team USA, but also to keep Michael Phelps's dream of eight Olympic gold medals alive.
In the final 25 meters, Lezak overtook French team anchor Alain Bernard despite Bernard having nearly a full body length's advantage when Lezak started his leg and half a body length with 25 meters from the end. Lezak split a 46.06, the fastest 100 m freestyle split in history, by nearly six tenths of a second.
We are more than happy to now have his suit (pictured on right) on display here at the ISHOF Museum.
