DOWNTOWN ELGIN CONSTRUCTION E-UPDATE

Central Business District Streetscape

Central Business District Streetscape Phase VWork on the next phase of the streetscape program in the downtown central business district continues.  This phase of work will include new curb and gutter, sidewalk and pavement on Spring Street between Division Street and Kimball Street and on Dexter Avenue between Douglas Avenue and Center Street.  New trees will be planted, along with installation of brick paver crosswalks.  Work on this phase of the program is expected to be completed by mid-September.

On Monday, May 7, installation of a new manhole on Spring Street will require the closure of Spring Street at Kimball Street and the eastbound lane of Kimball Street at Spring Street.  The closure is set to begin at 9 a.m. and both streets should be open by the end of the work day.

Stage 1 construction is continuing.  This stage consists of work being performed along the west side of Spring Street between Dexter Avenue and Kimball Street and along the north side of Dexter Avenue between Douglas Avenue and Spring Street.
On Dexter Avenue, traffic will be limited to one-way eastbound between Douglas Avenue and Spring Street.  Access to this block will be from Douglas Avenue.

On Spring Street, between Dexter Avenue and Symphony Way, two-way traffic will be maintained with narrower traveling lanes.  When necessary to accommodate construction vehicles, one lane may be closed but two-way traffic will be coordinated using flaggers.  At the end of each construction day, two-way traffic will be opened for overnight traffic.

On Spring Street between Symphony Way and Kimball Street, only northbound traffic will be allowed and southbound Spring Street will be detoured west on Kimball Street to Douglas Avenue and then left on Douglas Avenue to continue southbound.

Detour signs have been posted to assist traffic around the construction zone.

Traffic is expected to be in this configuration through mid-May.

Specific questions regarding the construction can be directed to Shelley Costello with TranSystems at 847-871-3185.  The public is invited to attend the weekly progress meetings between 9 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. to ask questions or seek specific information about the project.  The meetings are held on Thursday mornings at the field office located at 112 North Spring Street.

For general information on the project, please contact Joe Evers at 847-931-5955 or visit the City's website at CityofElgin.org

Riverside Drive Promenade

Riverside Drive PromenadeTwo weeks after the cofferdam failed when the river levels rose higher than they had been in several years, IHC has been able to isolate the work area from the river by the use of super sack sand bags.  The pumps are running again and will hopefully have them back to finishing up the concrete work by Monday, May 6.  Road closures will remain as set.
