RIDING TECHNIQUES

Tad Haas

So you have an adventure bike, now what? Size does matter. What riding techniques should you be using? How is this different than street riding? How can you best deal with gravel, sand and other obstacles? Where should you ride and what resources are available? This presentation, a hands-on and Q&A driven session, will help you maximize the joy of riding your new BMW or other adventure machine.

Tad Haas is a Puget Sound Safety Off-Road instructor (www.pssor.com) and experienced adventure traveler. (www.overlandnow.com) His interactive presentation style and the abuse of his F800GS Adventure (or other shop bike) should be entertaining and informative.

David Preston

Northwest Author Publishes 7th book: Triathlon Ride

Bothell resident David Preston has just published his 7th book as an Amazon e-reader.  Triathlon Ride is the 3rd novel in his "Harrison Thomas" mystery series.

Over a dozen years ago Preston wrote Motorcycle 101, a light-hearted guide to motorcycling for those new to or returning to motorcycles.  Originally written for his son, Preston's book sold 1,000 copies and is now out of print. Motorcyclists asked for a revised and updated version of the book, and he responded with Motorcycle 201, an extensively revised e-book edition with added sections.

He later published two collections of essays that deal with motorcycles and high performance cars, titled Motorcycle Heart, Theory, and Practice and No Corner Left Unturned.

With some success from these books, he dug out a teen romance and mystery novel he wrote back in the 1980's during his first career as a junior high teacher. The Third Marcia had never received any serious attempts to find a publisher.  "I think at that time," he explained, "I was more interested in seeing if I could actually create a novel." The rise of self-publishing through Amazon removed that hurdle, and The Third Marcia became his fourth e-reader book.

PACKING TIPS

Tom Mehren

In 2008, moto journalist Tom Mehren (Sound RIDER!, American Motorcyclist, Motorcycle Escape) released his popular book, Packing Light/Packing Right. Things have evolved in the seven years since its release and Tom is hard at work on his next book which will feature over 1,000 motorcycle touring tips and tricks.

Join us for this open discussion where Tom will share various tips he's learned over the years and open up the floor for discussion of each one. Tools, gear, apparel, storage, route planning, and more will be covered. He'll also dispel several myths that have been making their way through the motorcycle community of late, considered to be tips, which are actually potential hazards.

Regardless of what kind of motorcycle you ride, there will be plenty of eye openers for everyone.

  • Saturday, January 31st

SERVICE DEPARTMENT
It's getting brighter every day now, but warm dry pavement is still months away. So, this month I'd like to talk about tires and tread depth. We here at Ride West are asked, daily, "When should I replace my tires?" "When the tread wears down to the 'tread bars'" is most often the answer. We need to understand the purpose of the tire "tread" which is water redirection and to tell you how much usable rubber you have left. If we wear all the rubber down past the grooves in it, then just the carcass remains. By carcass, I'm referring to what is left over after the usable, "sticky", rubber is gone. The carcass rubber won't flex and grip the road like the thicker treaded rubber, and if water is added to the equation it becomes downright dangerous.

Worn Tire Tread Hydroplaning in a car is scary and dangerous and even more so on a motorcycle. If the tread or "grooves" are too worn to facilitate a path for the water to escape, then it will remain between our tires and the road, and that's what will lead to hydroplaning.

Tire "cupping" is also a factor in tire wear and in most cases normal, but it also robs us of our precious contact patch. A lot is going on down there, and it takes just a few moments to inspect what's between you and that scratchy pavement. If you don't know what to look for or just want a second opinion, please just drive by our service alley and we'll give you an educated opinion. Don't forget to keep an eye out for all those things you have no control over such as leaves, branches and moss (my least favorite) on the road.
