In 1963 Keith Thye and friend Dave Yaden dropped out of college for a year and took an eight month, 25,000 mile motorcycle expedition from Portland, Oregon to Pucon, Chile. Their adventures and the conditions that they experienced were life changing. 50 years later the two decided to embark on what would be basically the same journey. But what was the same and what changed in that time? What lessons can be learned from doing the same journey at a very different time?

The rain is here, and I'm sure the cold is soon to follow. Regular inspection of your brake pads, discs, and tires is critical for safe riding. With all the water on the roads, pads and discs tend to wear a bit quicker, so inspecting them more frequently is important over the wet months. If you're unclear on the process, give us a call to set up an appointment.
Here is an example of pads and a disc that are worn well past their service limits. This can be a costly repair that is also avoidable.

Bring in your used parts, gear and accessories two weeks before the event and prepare to make some holiday cash! We accept check-ins until the 5th of December. Due to our busy day, we cannot accept items the day of the swap.
If you would like to sell at this event, Ride West will charge a 20% consignment fee, but only for the items sold. If you prefer store credit, pay only a 10% consignment fee... which pays for advertising and overhead. For items that do not sell, you'll be able to pick them up a week after the swap.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON... AND SO ON, AND SO FORTH... DAN PATZER

I entered my midlife crisis in style, riding within the sweet spot behind a tall Glaser fairing on "SUNRISE," my highly modified, Twin-Spark one-liter, five-speed 1974 BMW R75. "SUNRISE" was named for its scenic mural of the bike itself riding toward a sunrise.
This bike was a far cry from the Sears Interstate moped I pedaled during high school. Yes, it was the one with the handlebar-lever-actuated decompression valve, which released the engine compression while pedaling.
My college years found me on a 150cc two-stroke Suzuki twin. You haven't enjoyed roadside repairs until you've had to add oil into the gas tank during refueling. Add too much oil and the spark plugs will foul. Add too little oil and the piston rings will fry. I always carried two sets of spark plugs, a set of piston rings and the tools for replacing the needed parts on the roadside. I learned the hard way the piston tops will melt away during sustained high-rpm running.
